Without the help of a special woman, Jim Ripley wouldn’t be what he is today.
Jim and his brother, Alex, were placed into disparate adoptive homes at a young age. Because of their parents’ drug addiction, Alex was placed with the Ripley family while Jim went to live in four separate homes over the course of three years, suffering abuse (虐待) along the way. Jim and Alex only saw each other every few months, but during their visits, Mrs. Ripley grew to care for Jim, too.
“Mrs. Ripley would take us for lunch at McDonald’s as Alex always liked the food, and that’s when she first noticed the scars all over my body,” Jim wrote. “She immediately made arrangements for me to join their family.” Unfortunately, Mr. Ripley passed away from cancer shortly after Jim joined the family. But even in the face of hardship, Mrs. Ripley never once considered parting with Alex or Jim.
“Nobody would have blamed her for taking us back. But instead she took us to court and made it permanent,” Jim continued. “She must have been super stressed, but that’s not at all what I remember. I just remember the words that she gave me. They are always: ‘You’re smart.’ And ‘You’re handsome.’ And ‘You survived all bad things because you’re strong.’ There are very few forces as powerful as a mother’s love.”
Jim joined the Marines ( 海军陆战队) and graduated from law school! Now, as a father himself, he couldn’t be more grateful to Mrs. Ripley for making his life worth living and giving him a future to look forward to.

Man must be strong.
Hard work pays off.
Kindness makes a man wiser.
Where there is love, there is hope.

Aysha Buffet remembers mashing the potatoes in one of her favorite Filipino dishes just so she could tell her classmates she had Aussie food for dinner “like all the cool kids,” the Melbourne performer says in a show where she cooks Philippine chicken adobo with her mom.
On the new ABC-funded mini-series, Gourmet Lazy, many culturally diverse Australian performers and their moms take the audience through family dishes that their parents cooked for them as a child. Creator Brendan Wan, an Australian-born Chinese producer, says he wants to show off simple and homely meals from different cultures and make people proud of their own foods and cultures. Brendan’s mom arrived in Australia in the 1980s, and his dad is an Indonesian-Chinese migrant. He says the basic foods his parents cook are what he would always go back to.
For Melbourne comedian Urvi Majumdar, it was her first time cooking a dish with her mom from start to finish. They made a hearty Indian dish called Khichuri. Urvi says she wants to learn more about her Indian culture—including cooking—so that she can pass it on to the next generation if she has children.
“I can cook pasta, but I’m not good at curries at all. Growing up, it was always my mom cooking,” she says. Like Aysha, Urvi also recalls “trying to fit in” at school by bringing sandwiches rather than curries. But now she’s older, and she says she’s not trying to “be as Australian as possible”, and she appreciates her Indian culture.
“Being a second-generation Australian, it’s hard to find experiences that I can share with my mom. So the cooking show was a really good experience,” Urvi says.
What did Aysha try to do at school
Be a good cook.
Hide her differences.
Show her good personality.
Make food for her classmates.
What can be learned about Gourmet Lazy
It lasts quite long history.
Its guests are mother-child teams.
It focuses on homemade Aussie food.
Its audience is Australian-born people.
What change has Urvi gone through after growing up
She’s more skillful in cooking.
She’s more and more humorous.
She’s more dependent on her mom.
She’s more appreciative of Indian culture.
What can we learn about Urvi and her mom
They both love cooking.
They have few chance to chat.
They both love new mini-series.
They have experienced the cultural gap.

Sulphur-crested cockatoos (葵花风头鹦鹉) are common in Australian wood areas. But as forests have been cut down, the birds have gotten used to living near people.
In 2021, scientists at the Max Planck Institutes reported that the cockatoos had learned how to open the lids (盖子) of dustbins to find food, making a big mess. When scientists first began studying the cockatoos in 2018, only three areas near Sydney had lid-opening cockatoos. A year and a half later, cockatoos in 44 different areas knew the trick.
This time the scientists not only studied cockatoos, but also studied humans’ response. The scientists spent weeks studying more than 3,200 dustbins in four different areas of Sydney. They wanted to see how many bins were protected and what methods were used.
In one area, over half the bins were protected. The most common way of protecting them was to put some heavy objects on the lid. Some people also put things like rubber snakes on the top of their bins. The scientists discovered that humans were teaching each other tricks, too. In most neighborhoods, many people used the same cockatoo-stopping methods as their neighbors. The scientists say it’s like a race between humans and cockatoos to learn new ways of doing things. Now many cockatoos have learned how to push heavy items off the lids. As a result, humans have doped out ways to protect their bins. The scientists expect these conflicts to
become more common as humans take over more areas that used to be wild.
What’s the main idea of the first two paragraphs
More forests have been destroyed.
More people choose to live in the wild.
More cockatoos have learned to open lids.
More scientists discovered cockatoos’ secret.
What do the scientists focus on this time
How humans respond to the birds’ trick.
How the cockatoos learn the trick.
Why more birds can play the trick.
Why humans prevent the birds’ trick.
What can we infer from the last paragraph
Animals defeat humans at last.
The design of bins is quite important.
People try to teach animals in a kind way.
Humans should live with animals harmoniously.
Which can be the best title for the text
A New Place Where Cockatoos Find Food
A Battle Between Cockatoos and Humans
A Big Problem of “Homeless” Cockatoos
A Human-wildlife Conflict All Over Australia

Caring too much about others’ views was energy-consuming and unnecessary. No matter what you do or say, or how you act, people will always give their opinions about you. 36 Otherwise, you’ll allow others’ opinions to not only hurt you, but often discourage you. Here are ways to stop caring about what other people think of you.
Remember not everyone cares. 37 They’re always too busy thinking about their families, work, and whatever else to think about you.
Think about what you want to be. If others’ opinions influence your life, you should handle them in your power and ask yourself, what do you want Are you making these choices only to impress others 38
Accept not everyone will like you. In life, some people will like you and others might not.
39 But most of the time, some people don’t like you, which has nothing to do with you. There will be people accepting all of you and there will be people supporting you in the world. These are the people who deserve to walk with you.
40 You may worry about ending up looking like a fool because of a mistake, but mistakes are unavoidable. When you overcome your fear of making mistakes, you will be unstoppable. One way to deal with anxieties is to make a list of all the possible things that could go wrong.
Don’t let them disturb you.
Face the mistakes bravely.
The key choice is what you prefer to be.
The only important thing is letting off anger.
People all around you are busy with their things.
It is really hard to face someone who has negative views of you.
Your decisions, from this angle, will help you become self-confident.

A Beautiful Brooch
In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw a beautiful brooch ( 胸 针 ) in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the price five dollars was too high for Reuben Earle. Five dollars would buy almost a week’s food for his family.
Reuben couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Dora. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home and the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children, but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.
Nevertheless, he opened the shop’s door and went inside. Standing proudly and straight in his flour-sack ( 面粉袋改做)shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding,“But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time ”
“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “People around here don’t usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should keep for a while.”
Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would get surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering (捶打) from a side street, Reuben suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece. That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin.
