Fiction can be a powerful tool for helping individuals make sense of the real world. Science fiction is no different. In light of that, we have rounded up some of the best sci-fi novels of all time.
Dune - Author: Frank Herbert - Date published: 1965
One of the most beloved sci-fi novels of all time, Dune received a theatrical release in 2020. It was not the first time the coming-of-age story about a young man who must fight for his own life as well as the existence of his planet hit the big screen.
The War of the Worlds - Author: H.G. Wells - Date published: 1898
The father of science fiction, H.G Wells, wrote this novel, in which a group of aliens (外星人) attacks Earth, destroying everything in their path. When the novel was first turned into radio broadcast in 1938, it caused public panic as many listeners didn’t realize it was fiction.
The Giver - Author: Lois Lowry - Date published: 1993
Arguably the most widely read science fiction novel, The Giver follows a young man named Jonas, who is set to become the Receiver of Memory within his society. As his training gets underway, he begins to realize that the society he is in may not be all that perfect.
The Three-Body Problem - Author: Liu Cixin - Date published: 2006
Liu Cixin is one of China’s most beloved science fiction authors, and The Three-Body Problem marks English-speaking readers’ first opportunity to engage with his work. In the book, a group of aliens plan to occupy Earth. On Earth, some humans plan to side with the aliens and others plan to fight back.

Three years ago, CheMyong Jay Ko received a call from a broken-hearted old man saying his dog had just been killed by a truck. He asked: Would it be possible to clone his beloved pet
Having studied cloning for more than 20 years, Ko had a positive answer. He knew a handful of commercial companies that were committed to bringing cloning to ordinary pet owners — for a price, of course. To clone a dog, the owner had to pay $50,000 before taxes. The high price turned the old man off, but not some wealthy pet owners. The most famous is Barbara Streisand. The singer had two dogs cloned from cells taken from the mouth of her white deceased Sammie.
As Streisand wrote later, “I was so shocked by the loss of my beloved Sammie, after 14 years together, I just wanted to keep her with me in some way. It was easier to let Sammie go if I knew I could keep some part of her alive, something that came from her DNA.”
If you spend enough time reading about pet cloning, you’ll see that adjective come up over and over again: beloved. When people clone their animals, they do so because they love them — and because they can’t stand losing them forever. The price of $50,000 may seem reasonable if it saves you the immeasurable pain of saying goodbye to a beloved family member.
Talk to experts about cloning, however, and you’ll begin to realize that cloning has far more problems than money. For example, there would be significant differences between the clone and the original pet, both in their looks and personality. Even Streisand admitted, “You can clone the look of a dog, but you can’t clone the soul.”
4.Why did the old man call Ko
A.To save his dog. B.To seek comfort.
C.To have his pet cloned. D.To share heartbreaking news.
5.What does the underlined word “deceased” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.cute. B.dead. C.cloned. D.disabled.
6.Streisand’s words in Paragraph 3 serve as ________.
A.an example of cloned pets
B.an analysis of how she kept her dog alive
C.an explanation why people clone their pets
D.a description her mixed feelings about cloning
7.What can be inferred about cloned animals from the last paragraph
A.They may fail to meet people’s expectations.
B.They improve on the original in personality.
C.They may bring experts serious problems.
D.They look the same as the original.

With intelligent systems and new-age transit networks, life in the big cities will likely be happier and more efficient.
After all, more than 60 percent of the world’s population is expected to live in cities by 2050, according to a UN report. The answer to making these cities more livable for so many people lies in creating “smart” cities. These cities will use 5G networks and the “internet of things” (IoT) to make everyday life safer and more convenient. Some cities are already using smart technology to improve the lives of residents.
But what exactly does a smart city do In the United States cities of Boston and Baltimore, smart trash cans can sense how full they are and inform cleaning workers when they need to be emptied. In Amsterdam, the Netherlands, traffic flow and energy usage are monitored and adjusted according to real-time data gathered from sensors (传感器) around the city. And in Copenhagen, Denmark, a smart bike system allows riders to check on air quality and traffic condition as they ride.
Smart cities will be interactive, allowing their residents to feel like they’re truly shaping their environment, instead of merely existing in it. “One of the most important reasons to have a smart city is that we can actually communicate with our environment in a way that we never have in the past,” said Mrinalini Ingram, head of a telecom company.
“Smart cities will also allow us to save resources.” said Mrinalini Ingram.“By using sensors and 5G networks to monitor the use of water, gas and electricity, city managers can figure out how to distribute and save these resources more efficiently. Emissions of carbon dioxide and other air pollutants can be more closely monitored in smart cities as well.”
Of course, it will take time and money to turn our current cities into the smart cities of the future. But as we’ve already seen, more cities around the world are already adopting smart technology in small ways. China, for instance, is making investments in big cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou to make them “smarter”. It won’t be long until even more cities start to develop their own smart infrastructure (基础设施).
8. What calls for the development of smart cities
A. The rapid progress in 5G networks.
B. The marked increase in world population.
C. The growing number of residents living in cities.
D. The major concern over the safety of living in cities.
9. How does the author explain the way smart cities work
A. By making a contrast. B. By giving examples.
C. By listing figures. D. By telling a story.
10. What can we learn from Mrinalini Ingram about smart cities
A. Air pollution will be stopped in its track.
B. People will be better aware of environmental protection.
C. People will be able to make the most of our environment at random.
D. Resources can be saved by keeping track of how they are used.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward smart cities
A. Indifferent. B. Critical. C. Positive. D. Doubtful.
D
In recent years, people have been focusing on the quality of food that children are fed in schools. Former First Lady Michelle Obama worked hard to make school lunches healthier, resulting in new menus that featured less fat and salt, more fruits and vegetables.
But high-quality nutrients count for little when there is no time to eat them. Amy Ettinger reports, "There is no national standard on how much time kids get to eat that meal. " And with schools being occupied with test scores, teachers are using every available minute for lesson time, which often leaves kids without enough eating time.
This is a problem because the length of the school lunch period is a key factor (因素) in how much nutrition children actually get. Research has found that having less than 20 minutes for lunch results in children consuming much less of their lunch than those with more than 20 minutes.
This is really terrible. For many low-income kids, that cafeteria lunch can represent half their daily energy intake. There's also another terrible message that it's acceptable to wolf down food as fast as possible before rushing off to your next class. Cafeteria time should be a chance to interact with friends, to learn important social skills, to observe and share varieties of food. It should be a break in day, a chance to relax before heading into the afternoon.
As Ettinger explains, some parents are hoping the National Parent Teacher Association will address this issue. This, in turn, would help parents push their kids' schools for better lunch time standards. Meanwhile, if you have a kid in this situation, you can help by packing a healthy lunch to spare them the cafeteria lineup. Make the foods easy to eat, provide non-messy snacks that can be eaten in class, put great effort into serving a hearty breakfast, and sit down as a family for dinner whenever possible.
12. What did Michelle Obama make efforts to improve
A. The quality of school lunches. B. The performance of school kids.
C. The school lunch time kids have. D. The eating habits of school kids.
13. What happens to children in American schools
A. They are occupied with many tests. B. They fail to get along with each other.
C. They consume more meat than before. D. They have less lunch time than before.
14. How are low-income kids influenced by the problem at school
A. They can't go to classes on time.
B. They can't have enough energy.
C. They can't share different kinds of food.
D. They can't hold a positive attitude toward life.
15. What can parents do to solve the problem
A. Prepare a better lunch for their kids.
B Stop their kids going to the cafeteria.
C. Force schools to make adjustments to lunch.
D. Guide their kids on how to pack their own lunch.

Have you ever had someone tell you, “If you eat before bed, you're going to get fat” ___16___ But is eating late at night, specifically after 8 p.m., really going to make you gain weight
One theory is that your metabolism(新陈代谢)slows down when you're asleep. With a slower metabolism, fewer calories are being burned. Thus the calories you eat right before bed would not be bumped off as much as they would be while you're awake. Although the science seems pretty sound, recent studies have shown that metabolism changes very little while you are asleep. The heart is still beating, lungs are still working, and the brain is still very active. ___17___ So while we are asleep, we are still burning calories.
___18___ Carbohydrates(碳水化合物)are one of your body's main sources of energy. When they go unused, they are stored primarily as fat. However, the time of day that carbohydrates are consumed does not play a role as to how much of it is stored as fat.
Actually, weight gain is based on the amount of calories being consumed overall and the amount of calories used overall. ___19___ It has little to do with the time when you eat. So how come individuals have higher BMIs when they snack' at night Although there is a relation between the two, it is simply a result of eating too many calories!
Snacks that individuals tend to eat during the night are usually high in sugar and calories, such as ice cream, candy, potato chips, and soft drinks. The time these snacks are consumed does not matter.___20___.
A. All of these actions take energy.
B. That is to say, you will not get fat if you eat before bed.
C. Anyone eating anytime after the morning will become fat.
D. Food consumed late at night will more likely be stored away.
E. Without ever questioning it, people quickly assume this to be true.
F. Simply speaking, if you eat more calories than you burn, you will gain weight.
G. There's another theory about eating specifically carbohydrates before bed.

Firstly, please make sure you don't abandon the good habit of keeping early hours. Early risers tend to be healthier and achieve more. Moreover, a balanced diet is beneficial to health. Finally, we should limit the time we spend on screen-based activities and take an active part in sports instead.
Follow the tips above, and you will live a full and healthy life. Wish you happiness in the coming summer vacation!
