Dev Singh lives in Sri Lanka. He works for an organisation ( 组织) that protects elephants. When he was a little boy, Dev wasn't interested in train sets or toy cars. He loved going to the zoo and reading books about animals. He learned a lot about the animals in Sri Lanka, and he saw that some of the animals, like the Sri Lankan elephant, needed to be protected.
He joined the World Wildlife Fund when he was 14, and he spent his weekends looking after animals. He enjoyed the experience very much, and he decided to work with animals when he finished school. Now Dev lives and works in a small village near an area with elephants. He looks after sick elephants and protects them from danger.
Every day, Dev gets up early to check his emails. “Usually, I get emails about elephants that we're already looking after. But sometimes I get an email about a wild elephant that's sick or in danger.” As soon as he gets an email like that, Dev and his team drive into the countryside to find the elephant.
Looking for wild elephants is the most dangerous part of his job — the team has to be very careful when they find one. “Once I saw an elephant, and I thought it was sleeping. But I realised it wasn't asleep when it suddenly got up and started chasing (追赶) me!”

Jaime, a new immigrant (移民), decided to see his daughter's first show in a school play. His daughter, Carol, was eight years old. She was a student at a primary school. She was playing a rain cloud in the school play about the weather in California. It was not a big part, and Carol had one line. The line was, “I am sad enough to cry about how dry the state is.”
Jaime and his wife (妻子) arrived quite early in order to get good seats ( 座位) in the school hall. Luckily, they found two seats in the front. Before the show began, Mr Copper, the head teacher, made a short talk. The talk was about how hard the teachers and students worked together to make the play possible. These days, an elderly woman touched many people's hearts. She was honoured (给与奖励) as a role model in China's fight against poverty (贫穷). Her name is Xia Sen.
Over the past years, 98-year-old Xia Sen has given away most of her personal savings (储蓄) to help students from poor families in Danfeng, Shaanxi, and Shangyou, Jiangxi get an education (教育).
Born in 1923, Xia was only 15 years old when she became a teacher in Yan'an. While teaching she kept learning. Years later, she went to work as a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
In 2006, Xia visited Xijie Primary School in Danfeng. The school was old and in bad condition. That made her very sad. She spent 20,000 yuan buying desks and books for the students.
In 2008, she took out 200, 000 yuan and helped Zhaogou Primary School in Danfeng build a classroom building. It is a building with eight bright and clean classrooms, which is a complete change from what their old classrooms looked like.
Five years later, Xia used 1 million yuan of her savings to set up the “Xia Sen Scholarship (夏森助学金)” to help high school and college students from poor families in Danfeng and Shangyou. So far, at least 182 students have gotten help from the scholarship to pay for their education.
