It was about 11: 00 am on 5th April, 2022. Not far from a bridge in Mianzhu, Sichuan, people were busy with daily life. Suddenly, a white car speeded up (加快速度), ran into a guard rail (护栏), and ended up in the river below. Soon there was a crowd. Many of them didn't even know how the accident happened.
At the critical moment ( 危急时刻), Wang Minghong, a man in his late forties, ran to the guard rail as fast as possible and jumped into the river.
“I was with my wife (妻子), and we were on our way home,” said Wang. “All of a sudden, I heard a great noise and saw a car fall into the river. And there were people in it. I knew I had to try to save them.”
So Wang was in the water, and another man was there too, trying to help. They swam to the car and got two women out before it was upside down. However, the third passenger (乘客) couldn't move in the back seat (座位). And there was no way that the two of them could get the door open.
Wang knew he had to do something. He swam back to the crowd and shouted that they needed help. And in no time, he got enough tools. And several more people jumped into the river, one by one. Gyaltsan is a man from Tibet. He has a great talent (天赋) for maths. While running a café in Lhasa, he has an interest in Chinese culture. He has created a new multiplication chart (乘法表) to help primary school students calculate (计算) faster.
Four years ago, based on the traditional multiplication chart, he began to create a new multiplication chart. He used knowledge (知识) about some Tibetan games while making the new chart.
After Gyaltsan did a lot of tests with his daughters, the new chart was finally ready for use. “It takes about a month for a primary school student to learn the chart and remember it. Then it only takes around 6 minutes for a student to finish 120 multiplication exercises using my chart,” Gyaltsan said. “Even slower students take less than 8 minutes to finish them, while it takes a student up to 16 minutes to finish the same number of exercises using the traditional chart.”
Gyaltsan's new chart fits primary students between grades three and five better, but anyone can learn it, and it is very helpful in ▲ people's oral arithmetic (口算) skills.
Now, Gyaltsan's multiplication chart is in both Tibetan and Mandarin (普通话). Gyaltsan hopes that more students around the country can use his chart.

“Life is short, but there is always time enough for courtesy (礼貌).” — Ralph Waldo Emerson
People love being polite. You might have noticed we are always saying “please”, “thank you”, “excuse me”, and “sorry”.
When making a request (请求), you ask someone to do something for you. However, it may not help them in any way. Sometimes, you might make a request, and that request can be difficult for the other person to do. So it is important to make sure that you are being polite when making a request.
To do this, you might include some words such as “can”, “could”, or “please” to make yourself easy to talk to. They may make it look like you are asking a question instead of ( 而不是) making a request. However, don't worry ― the listener will understand you.
For example, if you are in a restaurant and say “I want the bill (账单)” to the waiter, your request will be thought very direct. You might use this kind of language if you are unhappy or have had very bad service. However, if you wish to sound polite, you might try speaking like this:
“Can I have the bill, please ”
“Could I possibly have the bill, please ”
We can also use polite language to ask for permission (准许). For example, just sitting down next to someone without asking might be thought a bit forward (鲁莽的). If that person is waiting for a friend, you may create an uncomfortable situation. You can ask for permission first. For example:
“Would it be OK if I sat here ”
“Do you mind if I sit here ”
1. When _______________, you ask someone to do something for you.
2. It is important to make sure that you are _______________ when making a request.
3. Words like “can”, “could”, or “please” may make it look like you are _______________ instead of making a request.
4. You may say “I want the bill” when you are unhappy or have had very _________.
5. We can also use _______________ to ask for permission.
