A
Animal Conservation
Many animal and plant species have become extinct and many more are in critical danger. Finding ways to protect the earth's wildlife and conserve the natural world they inhabit (居住) is now more important than ever.
The Dodo
The Dodo is a classic example of how human caused damage to the earth's biology. The flightless Dodo was native to the Island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The easily controlled bird became a source of food for sailors and was attacked by animals introduced to the island by humans such as pigs, monkeys and rats. The population of Dodos rapidly decreased and the last one was killed in 1681.
Rhinos
The rhino (犀牛) horn is a highly prized item for Asian medicine. This has led to the animal being hunted in its natural habitat. Once widespread in Africa and Eurasia, most rhinos now live in protected natural parks and reserves. Their numbers have rapidly decreased in the last 50 years, and the animals remain under constant threat from poachers.
The Giant Panda
The future of the WWF's symbol is far from certain. The Chinese government has set up many panda reserves to protect these beautiful animals. However, the panda's distinct black and white patched coat fetches a high price on the black market and determined poachers still pose (造成) one of the most serious threats to the animals.
Whales
Despite the fact that one third of the world's oceans have been declared whale sanctuaries (保护区), 7 out of 13 whale species remain endangered. Hunted for their rich supply of oil, their numbers have decreased. Collisions (碰撞) with ships, poisonous pollution and being caught in fishing nets are other major causes of whale deaths.
Tigers
The last 100 years has seen a 95% reduction in the numbers of remaining tigers to between 5,000 and 7,000 and the Bali, Javan, and Caspian tigers are already extinct. The South China tiger is precariously close to disappearing. Like the rhino horn, tigers' bones and organs are sought after for traditional Chinese medicines. These items are traded illegally along with tiger skins.

The world can be a scary place when you're young. It can be even scarier when you're a young little blue penguin (企鹅), the tiniest of the penguin species. Luckily, there are some humans willing to help. They stepped in to protect Billy, a blue penguin that appeared on a beach in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Spotted on November 29 at the slipway at Moncks Bay,near Sumner,in Christchurch, the little penguin immediately attracted a small crowd. Jeff Mein Smith saw the crowd while he was bicycling that afternoon, and he biked home to get his camera. When he returned to the scene,he found that the penguin had received a little sign, one that read “Hi,I'm waiting for my mum to come back. DOC(Department of Conservation) knows I'm here. Please leave me alone. Keep your dog away. Thanks, Billy, the baby blue penguin.”
Billy didn't move away from the sign. The DOC arrived later that afternoon to pick up Billy, though they were surprised to see it on the beach.“It's unusual for a blue penguin to be out in the open on the beach during the day,”Anita Spencer,a DOC senior ranger, told Stuff.
Billy was taken to the Christchurch Penguin Rehabilitation Center after being retrieved from the beach.Volunteers believe the bird may actually be a female penguin, and is around 2 months old. The chick weighs a mere 550 grams, less than a standard basketball. A blue penguin should weigh around 900 grams at this age. Most little penguins grow up to weigh 1 kilogram.
The center will help the little penguin gain some weight by feeding it fish juice, before it's set free into the ocean.

Currently, there are about 480,000 school buses operating today in the United States. These petrol-fueled school buses alone contribute 5.3 million tons of climate-changing pollution every year. Replacing all school buses in America with an electric-powered model would be equal to taking 1 million cars off the road, saving millions of tons of pollution annually.
If schools in America were to swap out all of these school buses with electric-powered replacements, it would not only have plenty of environmental benefits, but also many health benefits for the students taking school buses every week.
Not only do these hundreds of thousands of buses have terrible effects on the environment, they also have harmful health consequences for the students riding the bus every day. Approximately 95 percent of school buses run on gas, which is proven to cause respiratory diseases and worsen existing conditions such as asthma.
“Pollution from petrol-fueled school buses is harming our children's health and contributing significantly to global warming,” said Andrea McGimsey, Environment America Global Warming Director. “Our research shows that whether they're boarding the bus or on the bus, kids are exposed to poisonous air in high concentrations. Electrifying our buses is a common-sense solution for communities across the nation.”
These electric school buses are already available for schools to consider. They are cleaner, healthier, and often cheaper for schools to purchase in place of petrol-fueled buses in the long run. Electric school buses have zero exhaust-pipe emissions, which could help reduce kids' exposure to poisonous air on a daily basis.
“When we put our kids on a school bus, we rely on these buses for safe transportation,” said Jeff Robinson, director of US PIRG's transportation program. “We have the technology to avoid these negative influences, so why wouldn't we drive toward a cleaner future?”

The Amazon basin region is home to about 2.5 million insect species, tens of thousands of plants, and some 2,000 birds and mammals. To date, at least 40,000 plant species, 3,000 fish, 1,294 birds, 427 mammals, 428 amphibians, and 378 reptiles have been scientifically classified in the region. One in five of all the birds in the world live in the Amazon rainforest.
The warm and wet forest has been in existence for at least 55 million years, and thrived even during glacial periods, allowing for the evolution of an unbelievable diversity of species. Radiocarbon dating (放射性碳定年法)has revealed trees of 10 centimeter in diameter to be more than 300 years old, and some trees over 1,000 years old, indicating that untouched forests can experience unbelievable longevity.
The first human inhabitants are thought to have settled in the Amazon region about 11,200 years ago. European explorers arrived in the 16th century, bringing diseases which traveled faster than the explorers themselves, killing perhaps as many as 90% of the indigenous inhabitants (土著居民).By the late 17th century the Amazon basin was controlled by Portuguese and Spanish explorers.
The Amazon rainforest has been described as the lungs of our planet because of its important role in recycling carbon dioxide into oxygen. But due to deforestation (滥伐森林), rainforests now cover less than 5% of the Earth's land surface, and experts believe that this is a big contributor to global climate change. Severe deforestation began in the 20th century, with 587,000 square kilometers lost up to the year 2000. Most deforested land is used for grassland to raise farm animals and agriculture. The addition of transport routes has led to increased settlement and deforestation, and at the present rate, scientists estimate that the Amazon rainforest will be reduced by 40% in two decades.

参考范文:
Dear friends,
As we know, our school produces a lot of rubbish every day, such as leftover food, waste paper and plastic bottles. This brings a wide range of environmental problems as well as the waste of resources. Therefore, it's time that we took immediate action to change the situation.
First of all, it is necessary for us to raise awareness of environmental protection and develop the good habit of garbage sorting. What's more, we should voluntarily differentiate recyclable rubbish from non-recyclable rubbish in our daily life.
In a word, if everyone does his/her bit responsibly in garbage sorting, our school will become better and better. Let's take action now.
Yours,
Li Hua

Daniel was 15 years old then. He grew up in a very poor neighborhood. No one in his family had gone to college before. Actually, few people around him had received higher education. They all struggled to live a good life. Therefore, Daniel knew nothing about colleges or scholarships and he never thought he would go to college one day. Although he was a smart boy, he didn't study hard at school and often got into trouble with other teenagers in his neighborhood.
One day, while Daniel was walking on the playground, a boy of his age started making fun of him. Then that boy pushed him hard and Daniel fell onto the ground. Daniel became so angry that he stood up and beat that boy. So a fight began.
It happened that Daniel's English teacher Mr Smith was walking nearby. He immediately ran to the boys to stop the fight. Daniel was a bit worried because he knew his teacher was very strict with students. He was afraid his teacher would punish him. However, to his surprise, his teacher didn't do that.
“Daniel, let's have a talk,” said his teacher.
Daniel, not knowing what his teacher wanted to do, was very worried. But he nodded. So they went to a bench nearby and sat down. After they sat down, Mr Smith began, “Daniel, I know you're a smart boy, but you're wasting your life now. Why don't you study hard to go to college so that you can change your life and have a bright future?”
Hearing that, Daniel didn't know what to say. He had never thought about it. Daniel was in silence. Mr Smith continued, “I know you may have never thought about going to college. But everything is possible. When I was at your age, I was a troublemaker just like you and never thought I'd be able to go to college, either. It was all because of the support and encouragement of Mr Brown, my math teacher in high school.”

Paragraph 1:
Then, Mr Smith began to tell Daniel his story.“At that time, I usually skipped classes and every teacher was used to that, except Mr Brown. He arrested me again and again, so finally I yielded in case of meeting his disappointed eyes. And he noticed my change, talking with me about future. That was the first time I had heard somebody who suggested me to further my education and I began to study hard to be admitted into a college with the help of scholarship. And finally, I made it.”
Paragraph 2:
Daniel was greatly touched by Mr Smith's story. So he began to listen to the teachers carefully in class and finish his homework by himself. Fortunately, Mr Smith was willing to help him make up what he missed before, and other teachers were all glad to see his change and answer his question with patience. Eventually, he was admitted into a famous college and became a doctor.UNIT

A
Animal Conservation
1.Which group of the following animals has already ceased to exist according to the text
A.The Dodo, Rhino and Giant Panda.
B.The Rhino, Whale and South China Tiger.
C.The Rhino, Panda, Whale and Tiger.
D.The Dodo and the Bali, Javan, and Caspian tigers.
2.________ can serve as a cure for certain diseases.
A.The whale's rich oil
B.The panda's black and white patched coat
C.The rhino horn and tigers' bones and organs
D.The Dodo's delicious meat3.Which of the following statements is NOT true
A.The number of South China tigers has reached crisis point.
B.Many animals are threatened with extinction as a result of human activity.
C.People hunt for the endangered animals for high profit.
D.The whale is the representing mark for the WWF.

4.Why can the world be frightening to a young penguin
A.It is a rare species.
B.It faces potential danger.
C.It is surrounded by the crowd.
D.It is threatened by dogs.5.It can be inferred from the text that Billy ______.

8.What do the statistics in Paragraph 1 imply
A.The urgency of using electric school buses.
B.The popularity of petrol-fueled buses.
C.The necessity of limiting school buses.
D.The benefit of riding school buses.
9.What can we learn from Paragraphs 3 and 4
A.The negative impacts of petrol-fueled buses.
B.Students' exposure to different diseases.
C.Tons of pollution caused by school buses.
D.The consequences of global warming.
10.What is Jeff Robinson's attitude to electric school buses
A.Skeptical. B.Supportive.
C.Cautious. D.Fearful.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Problems of the Current School Buses
B.An Alternative Transportation, a Cleaner Future
C.Benefits for Students Riding School Buses
D.A Temporary Replacement, a Permanent Solution

12.Why are the figures mentioned in Paragraph 1
A.To prove the forest untouched.
B.To classify species scientifically.
C.To show the diversity of species.
D.To attract more attention to the Amazon region.
13.Why did most indigenous inhabitants in the Amazon region die
A.European explorers brought diseases there.
B.Portuguese explorers treated them badly.
C.A lot of trees were cut down and burned.
D.They got killed by Spanish explorers.
14.What can be inferred about the Amazon rainforest
A.It has the largest number of species.
B.It covers over 5% of South America.
C.It is becoming larger in area.
D.It is being endangered now.
15.What may be included in the following paragraph
A.Examples of destroying forests.
B.Measures to protect rainforests.
C.New settlements in the Amazon region.
D.Ways to stop global warming. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
