In order to enhance the security awareness of our students, and teach them what to do when a fire or an emergency happens, our school organized a fire evacuation drill this morning.
At half past nine o’clock am, we heard the alarm. Instructed by some teachers in charge, we rushed to the appointed areas in order. Afterwards, we followed the messages on the air to head for the safe place. On arriving at the playground, we stood in line. Our headmaster made a summary, attaching great importance to safety.
Not only did the drill increase our knowledge of protecting ourselves in the face of emergencies, a fire in particular, but also provided a precious opportunity to deal with them.

“I’m the editor-in-chief for a local art magazine,” Mr. Finn continued. “I love what you’ve done here. Such an unusual choice of medium, but what an excellent result! This is a very exciting form of artistic expression, young man. With your permission, I’d like to use a photo of your work for the cover of our next issue.” Jim nodded before he figured out how much he would be paid. But he was sure that he would earn some money and help his mom.
With the payment from the magazine, Jim could not hide his joy. Jim counted the bills Mr. Finn gave him several times on the way to the hospital. After he paid for Mom’s medical treatment, there was still some money left. Without hesitation, he rushed to the store to buy some painting tools and pigments. His heart almost burst with joy at the thought of being able to take care of his family through painting.

From the back seat of a rental car, 2-year-old Hagen repeatedly asked his parents the same question: “Where’s Buzz ” Ashley Davis realized she had left her son’s favorite Buzz Lightyear action figure on the plane. She calmly explained to her son that Buzz was on a “special mission” and would return to him shortly. In fact, she was planning to buy a replacement toy at a nearby store. Little did Davis know that Buzz was, in fact, on a special mission and would soon be back.
Jason william Hamm, an operations agent at Southwest Airlines, discovered the toy in the plane. He noticed the name Hagen on the bottom of Buzz’s boot. “I was thinking about how this little boy is missing his little buddy,” Hamm said. Once he tracked down Hagen’s boarding record, he sent an email to the family, asking for the address.
While waiting for a response, Hamm got creative. He took photos of Buzz in front of an airplane, an engine and even a cockpit (驾驶员座舱). And he didn’t stop there, Hamm wrote a letter to Hagen, complete with a Buzz Lightyear logo.
“To Commander Hagen,” the letter reads. “I am very excited to return to you upon completing my mission. I was able to explore the airport and spaceport in Little Rock, Arkansas while I was away, and I have included photos of my adventure. My journey has taught me a lot but I am so thankful to return my buddy.”
Once hearing back from the Davis family, Hamm printed out the photos he took, bubble- wrapped Buzz, and put in the handwritten letter. Then he decorated the outside of the cardboard box with a drawing of Buzz Lightyear, stars and planets.
Upon opening the package, Davis was speechless. “You could see all the love he put into it,” she said. Hagen was extremely surprised. His excitement was caught on camera, and the couple sent a video of his reaction to Hamm. “Seeing the boy’s smile made it all worth it,” Hamm said.
24. What happened to Hagen’s toy
A. It was missing accidentally. B. It didn’t get aboard the plane.
C. It got replaced at a nearby store. D. It was assigned a special mission.
25. What did Hamm do when he found the toy
A. He made a phone call to its owner.
B. He turned to the airport staff for help.
C. He tracked the information about its owner.
D. He took photos of it and posted them online.
26. Why did Hamm write the letter
A. To surprise Hagen with an interesting story.
B. To convince Hagen that the toy is humanlike.
C. To share his adventurous experience with Hagen.
D. To show the toy’s strong attachment to its owner.
27. What does Davis think of Hamm’s deed
A. Creative. B. Caring. C. Heroic. D. Charitable.

The first traffic lights in the United States were installed (安装) because of an increase in traveller on the road in the 1920s. Worried about accidents, towns and cities installed traffic towers to help the flow of cars. Officers manned the towers, using whistles and red, green and yellow lights to indicate to drivers when they should stop and go.
Due to the absence of effective traffic signal systems on some streets, it caused risks at intersections. Then, William Potts created the first tricolour, four-directional traffic signal. The very first four-directional traffic light was installed at Woodward Avenue and Fort. But throughout the country, there were still a lot of systems for traffic lights and patterns in place. Since this could end up causing more problems for drivers, the Federal Highway Administration set uniform standards in 1935 for all road signs, pavement markings and traffic signals, requiring them to all use red, yellow and green light indicators.
Red is the colour with the longest wavelength; that means that as it travels through air molecules, it gets diffused (扩散) less than other colour, so it can be seen from a greater distance. Yellow has a shorter wavelength than red but a longer wavelength than green. This means that red is visible the furthest away, yellow in the middle and green the least distance away—a helpful advanced warning for needing to slow or stop. But this could be a coincidence. Red meaning stop originated with train warning lights, and it’s not clear whether that was chosen based on wavelength, contrast against green nature or natural association of red with things like blood. It could be a combination of all three!
Back in the 1900s, some stop signs were yellow because it was too hard to see a red sign in a poorly lit area. Eventually, highly reflective materials were developed, and red stop signs were born. Since yellow can be seen well at all times of the day, school zones, some traffic signs and school buses continue to be painted the colour.
28. What’s the purpose of installing traffic lights in the 1920s
A. To increase the speed of cars.
B. To improve road safety and efficiency.
C. To reduce traffic jams in towns and cities.
D. To obey the standards of the government.
29. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. The absence of traffic signal systems.
B. The installation of the first traffic signal.
C. The first tricolour, four-directional traffic signal.
D. The existence of different traffic lights and patterns.
30. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3
A. The wavelength of the three colour.
B. The differences among the three colour.
C. The reasons for choosing red as the stop signal.
D. The relationship between red colour and its wavelength.
31. Which may be a disadvantage of red as a stop sign
A. It can’t be seen in the distance.
B. It is a kind of highly reflective colour.
C. It is not suitable to be used in school zones.
D. It can not be clearly seen in certain surroundings.
D
According to Dr. John Swaddle, a professor at the Institute for Integrative Conservation at William & Mary, hundreds of millions of birds die every year from window collisions (碰撞).
However, if you put decals (贴花纸) or colorful stickers outside of your windows, the birds are more likely to see the barrier and therefore avoid it.
Remember: never inside your window; always outside of your window.
“Double-glazed (双层的) windows reflect a lot of light, especially when you view them from a slight angle, as a fying bird would do,” Swaddle told Salon. He is the coresponding author of a recent study which tries to figure out how this basic reality of physics impacts on a bird’s experience as it flies near a standard window. For their experiment, researchers had birds perform repeated and controlled fight trials near windows with film (薄膜) products, BirdShades film and Haverkamp film, respectively.
“In our collision avoidance trials, BirdShades increased window avoidance by 47% and the Haverkamp increased avoidance by 39%. But neither product was effective when the films were applied to the internal surface of windows,” the authors concluded.
When breaking down the problem of avoiding window collisions from a bird’s point of view, Swaddle explained, “The light and reflected imagery from the external surface of the glass is sufficient to obscure a film or decal that is stuck to the inner surface from being seen clearly.”
If you want to protect birds from easily avoidable deaths without buying window film products, there are other solutions. Swaddle recommended “pleasing fritted glass that could be used in new construction and which is also bird-friendly”. Besides, he notes that screens can be helpful as well, not only by limiting reflectiveness but by providing birds with a cushion (垫) if they make impact. It is also possible to use everyday houschold objects to signal to birds that there are barriers—netting, bits of string, colorful stickers, and paint. These can all be used to this effect.
32. Which of the following can work to reduce bird window collisions
A. Choosing double-glazed windows.
B. Avoiding opening windows at night.
C. Covering the inner windows with decals.
D. Sticking decals to the outer side of windows.
33. What did the researchers want to find in the experiment
A. The bird-friendly film products and glass.
B. The efficient measures of collision avoidance.
C. The bird behaviors when hitting the bright window.
D. The link between light reflection and bird window collisions.
34. What does the underined word “obscure” in Paragraph 6 probably mean
A. Protect. B. Use. C. Shade. D. Find.
35. What is mainly talked about in the last paragraph
A. Other ways to avoid bird collisions.
B. Bird-friendly objects to attract birds.
C. Solutions to reducing the window cost.
D. Environmentally friendly glass products.

多余选项。
While gazing at (凝望) an airplane passing thousands of feet overhead, or when you are just about to board a flight at the airport, have you ever noticed that the vast majority of airplanes are white It seems a bit strange, but is there a real reason for it 36
The color white is a terrific reflector of sunlight, and reflects almost all the light that falls on it, unlike other colors, which absorb some of the light. 37 , it will absorb sunlight and heat up the body of the airplane, which is something you want to avoid. White, on the other hand, reflects that sunlight and avoids the gradual build-up of heat on the plane.
38 . In terms of money, painting an airplane is not like painting a fence. It requires a considerable investment. Painting a regular Airbus takes between two and seven days, depending on your budget. Plus, more paint on the fuselage (机身) means more overall weight, which will translate to higher operating cost.
You see, the end goal of an airline company is to minimize the cost as much as possible. Buying a colored airplane would mean that they would likely have to paint it white, for the various reasons mentioned above. 39 . Thus, colored airplanes have lower resale value.
Finally, if there’s no problem with the existing white color, then why bother fixing it at all 40 .
A. White doesn’t fade
B. Painting is expensive
C. When your airplane is in flight
D. If you paint your airplane in a color other than white
E. Commercial planes are generally white because of the following reasons
F. As shown above, the white color does have its benefits — both scientific and economical
G. So it makes perfect sense that the company would pay a lower price for colored airplanes

Jim dreams of becoming a famous artist to help lift his family from poverty. However, an illness in the family forces Jim to give up everything he worked so hard for.
Jim used to draw skyline on the roof of the school building, with broken piece of pencil lead he’d found in a rubbish can. His drawing was close to perfect except for some color. His family lived from hand to mouth so Jim could only rely on himself. He had to help out on the local farm after school and saved some of the money for paints.
One day Mom fell seriously ill and was rushed to hospital at once. While the rest of his family were still at the hospital waiting, Jim ran back home to get the household emergency money. But his heart sank when he saw the pitiful money. It’d never be enough to pay for Mom’s medical treatment. He ran into his bedroom and reached for his savings.
“Goodbye, paints and brushes,” Jim said as he added his to the emergency money. One night on the way home, thinking of Mom in hospital he wanted to do something for her. He bent down beneath a streetlight and put his fingers in the dirt on the roadside. Before he knew it, he drew a portrait(肖像)of Mom.
He found red dust and mixed it with mud to add shadow, then picked up some grass and turned it into some kind of paint. He used this to add definition around Mom’s nose, eyes and hair.

Jim turned around and found a stranger standing behind him. He gave Jim a friendly smile and introduced himself as Mr. Finn.
