Ⅰ.阅读理解
By now, most of us have picked up at least one pandemic hobby. And there's a seemingly common pandemic hobby trend: People who haven't been able to go anywhere are making imaginary travel plans. Maybe you're among those who have spent hours researching locations — even though you're not actually planning to travel.
It turns out that you aren't alone. People who seem to be sticking to public safety recommendations are still planning trips they don't intend to book. And, when I suddenly found myself addicted to an imaginary girls' trip to Joshua Tree, I wondered whether this was a healthy distraction.
“It's an escapist imagination,” said Regine Galanti, a psychologist, adding that there's nothing wrong with escapism during a global pandemic.
On the one hand, distractions are often beneficial right now. We have been living with COVID-19 as a pandemic for several years, and that means you've probably had to navigate a range of emotions like discomfort, sadness, or even boredom. So any hobby that doesn't harm anyone or endanger your well-being is probably a worthy attempt.
Even if vacation planning is your happy place, Dr Galanti suggests you “actually think about what you're trying to achieve.” Why “Maybe what you're saying is, I need a vacation from work,” Dr Galanti explains. “Then take three days off even if you are not going anywhere.” When you figure out what you're looking for, you might be able to find a small socially distanced adventure in your backyard or a quiet place. Vacation planning is a good way to spend some time, but there might be an even better way to get what you're desiring.
Anyway, when uncertainty is all around us, creating things to look forward to isn't a terrible idea. And when things are safer, you'll have all your plans in place.

I was unbelievably proud of my nine-year-old daughter, Emily. Determined to buy a mountain bike, she'd been saving her pocket money all the year, as well as doing small jobs to earn extra money.
By Thanksgiving Day, she had collected only$49. I said, “You can have your pick from my bicycle collection.” “Thanks, Daddy. But your bikes are so old.” She was right. All my girls' bikes were 1980s models, not the kind kids today would likely choose.
As Christmas drew near, Emily and I went bike shopping. As we left one store, she noticed a Salvation(救助) Army volunteer standing next to a big pot. “Can we give something, Daddy?” she asked. “Sorry, Emily. I'm out of change.”
Throughout December, Emily continued to work hard. Then one day, she made a surprising decision. “You know all the money I've been saving?” she said hesitantly. “I'm going to give it to the poor people.” So one cold morning before Christmas, Emily gave her total savings of$58 to a volunteer who was really very thankful.
Affected by Emily's deed, I decided to contribute one of my old bicycles to a car dealer who was collecting used bikes for poor children. As I selected a shiny model from my collection, however, it seemed as if a second bike took on a glow (发光). Should I contribute two No, one would be enough. But I couldn't shake the feeling that I should give a second bike. When I later delivered the bikes, the car dealer said, “You're making two kids very happy, sir. Here are your tickets. For each bicycle contributed, we're giving away one chance to win a girls' mountain bike.”
Why wasn't I surprised when that second ticket turned out to be the winner I like to think it was God's way of rewarding a little girl for a sacrifice (牺牲) beyond her age — while giving her dad a lesson in the process.

C.she made up her mind to buy a mountain bike
D.she presented her total savings of$58 to a volunteer
解析:选C 细节理解题。根据第一段内容和第四段中的“Emily gave her total savings of$58 to a volunteer ...”

I'm a speaker and give hundreds of speeches every year. I spoke about appreciation (感激) last month and I used this quote by Albert Schweitzer: “Sometimes our light goes out but is blown again into flame by meeting with another human being. Each of us should express the deepest thanks to those who have relighted this inner (内心的) light.”
I asked my audiences to shut their eyes and think about someone who, at some time in their lives, has relighted their inner light. Then I left the room in silence for several minutes. It was always a meaningful experience as they remembered the joy they felt from another person.
One day, a gentleman came up to talk with me and thanked me for creating a new awareness (意识) in him. He said he thought of his eighth-grade history teacher because she was everyone's favourite teacher and had really made a difference in all of their lives. Several days later, the gentleman found his history teacher and he wrote to her. The following week he received this letter.
Dear John,
You will never know how much your letter meant to me. I am 83 years old, and I am living all alone in one room. My friends are all gone. My family's gone. I taught 50 years and yours is the first “thank you” letter I have ever gotten from a student. Sometimes I wonder what I did with my life. I will read and reread your letter until the day I die ...
The gentleman was sad, “She is always the one we talk about when we have a get-together. She is everyone's favourite teacher — we love her! But no one had ever told her until she received my letter ...”
语篇解读:本文是一篇记叙文。作者以“感激”为主题的演讲使得一位先生采取行动,给以前的一位老师写了一封感谢信。作者通过这位先生与他曾经的老师的书信往来告诉我们:要及时表达对别人的感激。

A.To ask questions.
B.To thank the author.
C.To try to find his history teacher.

7.What does the teacher's letter show
A.We should never forget our teachers.
B.Teachers usually miss their students.
C.Expressing thanks may light up others' life.
D.It's never too late to show thanks to others.
8.Why was the gentleman sad after receiving his teacher's letter
A.No one loved the teacher.
B.He missed his teacher very much.
C.His teacher lost many loved ones.

5.Why did the author use Albert Schweitzer's words in his speech
A.To draw the attention of the audiences.
B.To show his honour to Albert Schweitzer.

6.Why did the gentleman come up to the author
A.To ask questions.
B.To thank the author.
C.To try to find his history teacher.
D.To introduce his history teacher to him.
D.He didn't thank his teacher in time.

As the parent of two teenagers who have played multiple sports over the years, I've seen the good, the bad, the ugly and the absolutely cruel.
However, when I think about the value of sports and why my kids continue to play sports, I find that playing sports can help kids become successful adults. Through sports, kids learn how to work in teams, how to challenge themselves to be better, and how to behave when they lose and when they win.
Whether kids play soccer, baseball, or football, they learn they are part of a team where one person depends on another. When my son plays baseball, he's not the only one who needs to play well; he depends on his defense to make the plays in the field. When my daughter plays tennis, she depends on her partner to cut off the ball at the net and win the point, and the tennis team depends on each person in order to win the overall match and become the champion. Sports also teach children to trust and respect the decisions of someone who understands how the entire team needs to work in order to succeed.
Sadly, though, youth sports have suffered from the “winning_isn't_everything;_it's_the_only_
thing” attitude. They have become too much of a reflection of professional sports. Winning is a happy result, but the lessons from losing are even more important. When my daughter loses the tennis match, her coach reminds her that she shouldn't lose heart and that she should learn more from losing than from winning. Losing makes you focus on improving your skills and your strategy. We're going to learn from our mistakes and not repeat them.
I believe that participating in youth sports is much more than building a sound body. Sports are the best way to shape and build more self-motivated and happier children and help them become more self-motivated and happier adults.

“What happened?” asked Mrs Sharpnack. The red marks covering the test said everything.
Without even seeing the grade, I knew I had failed.I felt upset as I realized what would come after this. My failing score would mean my grades wouldn't be high enough to be on the honour roll in that term. I wasn't as upset about missing a party as I was about having to explain to my friends why I wouldn't get to go.
My friends always got good grades, and usually, so did I. “I know you can pass this test,” said Mrs Sharpnack.“What if I let you take it again I'll give you a week to study.” But I just wanted to go home, forget about the test and never think about maths again.
Mrs Sharpnack could have left me behind. But she didn't.Perhaps a great teacher just can't be satisfied with students falling short of his or her potential.“I know you can pass this test,” she repeated firmly. She said it with such certainty that it almost felt like a vow (誓言).For a brief moment, I wondered if she could be right.
I had thirty minutes from the time school let out until my bus came.Mrs Sharpnack asked if I would be willing to use that time to go over the problems I had missed.I agreed. We started right then and made plans to meet each day for one week, after which I would take the test again.
After going over a few problems, my friend Madena came looking for me.
“What are you doing?” she asked.
But before I could say anything, Mrs Sharpnack turned my test backside up, hiding its contents.“Amanda is helping me with a special project,” she said.By then, it was time for our bus to come.I gathered up my things and left with Madena.
For the next week, I stayed after class with Mrs Sharpnack. She would go over each problem, carefully explaining their solutions.

But then I remembered how hard we had worked and how she had told me that she knew I could pass.I calmed down and tried to remember the examples she had used. The next day, Mrs Sharpnack told me I had only missed one question.
Paragraph 2:
Things were different after that. The day after the test, I was surprised to discover Madena walking into Mrs Sharpnack's classroom after school.I had assumed that once I had retaken the test I wouldn't be spending any more time there. But my friend had discovered a teacher who cared. Finally, we went to Mrs Sharpnack's classroom every day while we waited for our bus.UNIT 1 课时跟踪检测(四) 阅读写作融会练

Along the hallway (走廊), I saw mixed expressions on the faces of my students: excited, nervous, and worried. No doubt about it: they were this term's freshmen. My own first day at high school flashed into my mind.
Since our family had just moved to the place, I didn't know anyone at the school. On arriving, I picked up a map and my schedule (日程表). Oh, my goodness, what a large school it was! Nervously, I looked about for where my first class was to be held.
When I finally found my class, everyone was talking and laughing together, and I felt so lonely.Throughout the day, each period brought some new faces I had not seen before. But when my English class came around, I had a surprise: an old classmate! It was Ben, who had left my middle school right after sixth grade. We talked and joked about middle school and the clubs we were in together. My nerves eased (放松) a little.
Next was the PE class. This was the first class that I found without difficulty.Sitting through the boring introduction to the class by the teacher, I started talking to a girl sitting near me.I found out that her family had just moved here too, and she didn't know anyone either. As we talked, we discovered that we had a lot in common, and had a lot of classes together. This girl ended up becoming my best friend.I am so glad that I met her.
By the end of that day, I was full of optimism (乐观). I knew that high school would be an amazing experience.

Walking across the stage at graduation was more than just a personal achievement for Cody Sullivan, 22, as he became Oregon's first student with Down syndrome (唐氏综合征) to complete four years of college.
Cody's mom, Ann Donaca-Sullivan, said that as he and all his friends were graduating from high school, he kept asking her, “Which college can I go to?” After realizing there weren't any higher education programs for people with intellectual disabilities (智力缺陷) in the state, Donaca-Sullivan worked with Concordia University to make sure her son would get the college education that he wanted so much.
On his first day of college, Cody fit in with others. “Everyone likes studying together with Cody,” Eastley, 27, told InsideEdition.com.
Eastley explained that on his first day of college, he was surprised when he kept hearing “Cody” being called across the restaurant. “I see Cody is in the center of attention and I came up to him and told him my name was Cody Eastley,” he said. “That's how we became friends.”
Sullivan has even become a guide to other students who want to find their way. “I met him two years ago — he was my baseball coach,” said Matt Schweitz, one of Sullivan's friends. “He has been a part of all the sports teams, so I think that's how a lot of people meet him.”
Sullivan has already begun his work as a teacher's aide (助手) at a local school and is working to become a teacher one day.
“Our hope is that one day it's going to be nothing special about that.” Matt Schweitz said. “It's going to be so usual to see these people spreading their gifts in the world.”

The bad health effects of sleep loss during the week can't be repaid by longer weekend sleep, according to a new study.
Researchers have long known that sleep deprivation (剥夺) can cause weight gain and increase other health risks. But for those who force themselves out of bed every weekday after too few hours of shut-eye, they hope turning off the alarm on Saturday and Sunday will repay the weekly sleep debt and remove any ill effects.
The research, published in Current Biology, crushes those hopes. Despite complete freedom to sleep during a weekend recovery period, people in a sleep lab who were limited to five hours of sleep on weekdays gained nearly three pounds over two weeks and experienced disorders that would increase their risk for diabetes over the long term. While weekend recovery sleep had some benefits after a single week of sleep loss, those gains were wiped out when people fell right back into their same sleep-deprived schedule the next Monday.
“If there are benefits of catch-up sleep, they're gone when you go back to your daily schedule. It's very short-lived”, said Kenneth Wright, director of the Sleep and Chronobiology Lab at the University of Colorado at Boulder. “These health effects are long-term. It's kind of like smoking once was — people would smoke and wouldn't see an immediate effect on their health, but people will say now that smoking is not a healthy lifestyle choice. I think sleep is in the early stage of where smoking used to be.”
Wright said that the study suggests people should put sleep in the first place — cutting out the “sleep stealers” such as watching television shows or spending time on their phones. Even when people don't have a choice about losing sleep because of child-care responsibilities or job schedules, they should think about getting sleep in the same way they would get a healthy diet or exercise.

B.Weekend recovery sleep has many benefits.

Many years ago my grandfather had a small farm and chickens. One morning he sent me out to collect fresh eggs. He became concerned when I didn't return after a short time. When he came looking for me, I jumped with joy, but he saw tears in my eyes and noticed that I was in an empty chicken house.
Noticing I was not in a good mood, he asked,“What was wrong?” I told him tearfully,“That dirty rooster, who was now gentle, in your presence, came pecking (啄食) after me and all the hens started cackling (咯咯叫), which scared me, and I ran into the next hen house for safety.” He took me by my hand and we walked right by the now quiet dirty rooster and comfortable hens. We sat under the apple tree, and he related the following story.“Did you notice how that rooster and hens behaved when I came in Totally different than when you first came in.” I shouted,“The rooster and hens seemed to come at me.”
My grandfather then said,“That's a new rooster the neighbor gave me. All your life you are going to come across people who will act like that rooster and hens. Only in different ways! It's natural for that rooster to protect this house and his hens. The rooster is the leader and the hens are followers. Same with people! It doesn't matter whether they are men or women. There will always be people who will try to lead your life and if you let them, you will become like the hens.”
“But to be the leader, you have to first be able to lead your own life and be the rooster of your actions. You can be like the rooster leading the hens. Most of us in life are followers, like the hens and some stay hidden in their own chicken house, like you did.”

“That doesn't mean that the rooster in us is bad or dirty, like the one you just experienced. That's just the way some people naturally are, at least in their own minds. But did you notice the respect and the way he quieted down when I came in He saw me in his sense as a bigger, stronger and probably smarter rooster than he is, which I am and so are you. But you didn't think or believe it strong enough for him to feel. Next time before you walk in, believe that the rooster is just a tiny, sweet chick, and those hens are laying beautiful golden eggs that we can have for breakfast.”

9.What does the underlined word “crushes” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Ruins. B.Guarantees.
C.Deepens. D.Arouses.
10.What will Kenneth Wright agree with
A.Smoking is more harmful than sleep loss.
B.Weekend recovery sleep has many benefits.
C.Smoking and sleep loss have the same bad effects.
D.It takes long for people to see the effects of sleep loss.
11.What does Kenneth Wright advise people to do
A.Take regular exercise every day.
B.Reduce the screen time before sleep.
C.Watch some TV shows before bedtime.
D.Sleep as long as possible during weekdays.
12.What is the main purpose of this passage
A.To share some unhappy experiences.
B.To show some unknown facts.
C.To promote a healthy lifestyle.
D.To introduce a new study.

When we moved to China seven months ago, we were very worried about what we would be eating, and how we would live. We never thought that we would fall in love with the Chinese eating habits and style. We also never imagined that we have lost 80 pounds! We thought we should share some of our tricks with you. Here is the Chinese Diet — five easy things you can do to lose weight.
Use a smaller bowl — much smaller
Go into your cupboard and find your smallest bowl. Now that will be the bowl that you will eat out of. By doing this you actually pick much less food than you are naturally served.
Vegetables are your main course
For example, you might have one plate of a cucumber dish, one of corn & carrots, and then another with ribs. Find a few dishes that your whole family loves and rotate (轮换) those.
Cut down on your meat & dairy
We eat very little meat. We eat very little dairy. It was hard at first. Cut it down and try to limit it to eggs, milk and yogurt.
Use chopsticks to eat
We love eating with chopsticks and wonder why we didn't use them more at home. You eat a lot slower, A LOT.
Introduce rice and noodles into your meals
A Chinese diet includes a lot of rice and noodles. So our daily diet is no different, we eat rice and noodles 3 times a day.
We wish we had known these simple tricks back home that make such a difference in our waistline.

17-year-old Elexis Webster grew up homeless with cruel family members and serious health problems. But Webster has got over these difficulties to become an honour student at her high school.
The teen spent her childhood living in dug-outs (防空洞), cars, and any place where her family could find shelter. She was treated cruelly by her mother, a drug user, who left her and her sister alone without food for days. Her older brother disturbed her study too many times. Her poor living conditions led to her becoming extremely weak, which caused her to miss school often.
However, she got a 4.1 GPA in the exam, though many wouldn't expect her to have such a hard life. Surviving in the family in an environment like that, she was able to come out of it, and she knew she had to make the best of what happened to her.

My name is Eivind Trodden, I'm 42 years old and on Svalbard in the North Pole. My background was originally software engineering, and years later I decided to go ahead and get my pilot license. This year I wanted to try my hands at technology and got a job at Svatsat, the northernmost Satellite (卫星) Ground Station in the world. Now I work as a pilot and an operations engineer.
Originally, I moved here for the job. This was the first pilot job I got. After a while, I was attracted by the place, and right now the most important thing for me is to live here.
It is wonderful and full of differences. The polar night is balanced with the midnight sun. Here the year is much like a day. The winter is night. In the morning there is ice, snow and then spring. Then there is the endless day of summer, and finally, the town settles in with the sunset of autumn.
The summer is the most difficult. It is harder to create darkness than light. You have to have good blinds on your bedroom windows. A good trick is to create your own evening. I like to close the blinds and sit down in darkness with a good book or a movie before I go to bed.
The dark season is the favourite of many people living here. There are fewer tourists, and people have a chance to get together and be social after the busy summer. You have to be self-controlled though, and not start lighting candles in the middle of the day. Don't underestimate (低估) the cost of living here. You need a large number of tools to experience Svalbard to the fullest.
