The Marathon des Sables is considered by many people to be the hardest foot competition on the planet. It's a six-day, 156-mile marathon held in the Sahara desert in southern Morocco, where only the craziest runners compete.Mauro Prosperi, a Sicilian policeman and Olympic sportsman, decided to take part in this race, because what else was he going to do in Italy Eat amazing food and stay together with beautiful women in the sunshine
Four days into the race, Prosperi had worked his way up to the seventh place when a sandstorm came. The rules of the race warn that whenever a storm hits, runners must stop and wait for help. But Prosperi decided to turn a deaf ear to it.He kept on running.
When the storm died down six hours later, Prosperi found that he was suddenly lost and alone. For the next days, he would have to fight to be alive in the desert using only a knife, a compass, a sleeping bag and some food in his pletely alone in one of the world's largest and most unfriendly deserts, Prosperi had no choice but to keep on walking. On the eighth day, he found a place with water and trees, where he simply stayed for hours drinking the water. The following day he met a small group of women. They called the police for help. And finally, he was saved and spent two years on recovery.
Four years later, he returned to Marathon des Sables and successfully conquered the route which nearly killed him.He had since run more than eight desert marathons, and planned to run 7,000km (4,350 miles) across the Sahara from Agadir (Morocco) on the Atlantic Ocean to Hurghada, Egypt, on the Red Sea.

Earthquake rescue robots have experienced their final tests in Beijing. Their designers say that with these robots, rescue workers will be able to have more time to save more lives during an earthquake.
This robot looking like a helicopter, is called the detector-bot. It's about 4 meters long, and it took about 4 years to develop the model. Its main functions are to collect information from the air, and send goods of up to 30 kilos, to people stuck in an earthquake.
This robot has a high quality 360-degree panoramic camera. It can work day and night and will also be able to send the latest pictures from the quake area.Dr Qi Juntong, from Chinese Academy of Science, said, “Unlike other automatic machines, the most important feature of this robot is that it doesn't need distant control. We just set the information of the earthquake-stricken area on it, and then it takes off, and lands by itself. It flies as high as 3,000 meters, and as fast as 100 kilometers per hour.”
This robot has a different function — it can change as the environment changes. Its main job is to search for any signs of life in places where human rescuers are unable to go.
As well as a detector that finds victims and detects poisonous gas, a camera is placed in the 40 centimeter long robot, which can work in the dark.
Another use for the rescuers is the supply bot, with its 10-meter-long pipe. People who are trapped in the ruins will be able to get supplies including oxygen and liquids.
Experts have said that the robots will enter production, and serve as part of the national earthquake rescue team as soon as next year.

A couple in their 60s has travelled 12,000 miles across 16 countries from Britain to China — riding their bikes the entire way.Grandparents Peter and Chris stepped on the long journey after deciding to “do something a bit different”.They traversed (横穿) cities, deserts, mountains and everything in between across Europe, the Middle East and the East Asia. The married couple of 37 years enjoyed themselves with delicious local food and spent most nights inside a tiny tent put up wherever they could find shelter.
Peter, 66, said the moment they finally had a look at the famous Great Wall after a year and a half of cycling 30 miles a day was “really exciting”.At the end of their journey, the special pair didn't fly home but instead chose to book a cabin (舱) inside a 400m-long container ship. The final part was a three-week voyage from Singapore across the Indian Ocean and into the Mediterranean Sea before arriving at Southampton.
“You never know what the day is going to bring. All you know is that you are going to get on your bike and cycle.Every day is an adventure and every day is new.Overall, the experience is absolutely unbelievable,” Peter said.
Peter and Chris initially set out to cycle from Britain in January 2017 but were forced home. They had cycled all the way to Hungary when Peter slipped on tiles and broke his leg. After seven months of recovery, the couple set out again in Britain. They finally arrived in China in November 2018.
Both Peter and Chris agreed that the best part of the entire trip was coming across the kindness of strangers along the way, many of whom invited the couple for food and drink.Chris, 64, said, “It was a wonderful experience, particularly wonderful because of the amazing people we met along the way.”

In 2015, Chennai was destroyed by one of the worst floods in over a century, leaving thousands without food, water and supplies.During the flood, many heroes arose, one of whom was Santosh, a young man who owned a take-out restaurant in Chennai.
When the first flood hit in November, he got a call from a company called Naga Rava. The company asked him to prepare 5,000 packets of food and give them to the flood victims. He, with his partners, took the order, cooked for 14 hours and delivered them. But that night, as they sat together discussing the event of the day, they actually felt ashamed.“Here was a man not even from Chennai and he was going out of his way to help the affected people. We, while living here, had not really done anything ourselves for our own people,” said Santosh later.

A city in Sweden has used rainbow-coloured garbage recently. It has one of the most impressive recycling records in the world and met the EU's 2020 target of recycling 50% of waste many years ago.
Almost all the citizens in this city follow a strict recycling policy at home.People are expected to sort their household waste into seven separate categories, including food, textiles, cartons and metal. But what really makes the system stand out is the bright colour code.
The significance for this becomes clear at the city's recycling factory. The bags are collected altogether, so when they arrive at the factory, they are mixed up.But thanks to those bright colours, scanners can select the bags and separate them easily. One of the benefits of this method of recycling is that there is less cross-pollution (交叉污染物), so more of the recycled waste can actually be used to make new things. The food waste in green bags is processed on site into mud to make biogas, which powers the city's buses.Waste that cannot be recycled is burned at a local factory to produce electricity. This creates greenhouse gases, reducing dependence on traditional fuels, such as coal.
As countries around the world try to improve their recycling degree, some may look up to this city as an example to follow — as long as they think they can persuade their citizens to get sorting work done properly at home.

My best friend's mother was a social worker in Detroit, Michigan.Because of that, my friend Victoria and I were introduced early to the world of volunteering.
We did plenty of charity work. We always had a good time, and continued to volunteer whenever we had time, often even when we didn't. It became second nature. Hairstyles came and went, but Victoria and I found places to donate our time because that's how we were raised.
One particular morning we signed up for “Paint the Town”, an organization in Detroit to help low-income homeowners clean their houses. We were assigned a dilapidated (破烂的) house in one of the worst communities of the city. I was afraid as we got near to the front door, not knowing who we would find on the other side. We knocked three times quickly and stepped back, waiting to be let in.
When the door opened, my mouth did, too. Standing there was a little old lady with wisps (一束) of white hair and a purple apron (围裙) tied around her waist.
“Hello!” she said, “I'm Amelia. Please come in and I will show you where to start.” Her smile shone brightly. “I am just baking some cookies for you girls to eat.”
As she led us to the parts of her house that needed painting, my heart softened. Here was one of the scariest-looking houses in the city, but behind its doors was a sweet old lady with a cane and a big smile.
Here we were coming to help her, and instead she was doing something for us — baking homemade cookies and serving us tea!
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

Amelia stayed close by, talking to us as we painted, telling us about her native Ireland and how she came to Detroit.I felt so sad for her living in such a poor part of the neighbourhood with no one to keep her company. When I told her so, she laughed at me.
Paragraph 2:
“Nonsense!” she criticized. “This is my house even if it is falling down around me.I feel blessed that you girls came to help fix it up.I'm happy here.I've watched the neighbourhood change, and seen people come and go, but I always stay.We may all be different on the outside, but on the inside, we are all just after the same thing — community.Keep it up.Nothing will make you happier than helping other people.”What she said to me replayed itself as I volunteered in different parts of the town.UNIT 5 课时跟踪检测(五) 主题阅读拓展练

He did not sleep for four days, taking a one-hour break every day as he kept on cooking. As word got out about this man's effort, others stepped out to join him. From children to the elderly, strangers came to help him in cooking, packing and transporting food.Up to 300 volunteers worked together to make it all happen.By the time the fourth day finally came to an end, Santosh and his team had prepared 170,000 food boxes and delivered them to people in need.

8.What makes the system of rainbow-coloured recycling so outstanding
A.The impressive colours of the rubbish bags.
B.The self-control of citizens.
C.The strict recycling policy.
D.The eco-friendly code.
9.Which of the following statements is TRUE
A.Rainbow-coloured rubbish is commonly seen around the world.
B.When the rubbish bags arrive at the plant, they are mixed up.
C.The food rubbish will not be recycled to make new things.
D.All rubbish is burned to create electricity.
10.If other countries want to recycle waste like this Swedish city, they first should ________.
A.persuade citizens to use as much traditional fuel as possible
B.forbid citizens to create greenhouse gases
C.not allow citizens to create any waste
D.talk people into sorting household waste in a correct way
11.Where is this text most likely from
A.An announcement. B.A poster.
C.A magazine. D.A science fiction.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。

Iceland on Sunday honours the passing of Okjokull, as scientists warn that some 400 others on the subarctic island risk the same fate.
With a theme of fighting climate change, about 100 Icelanders have said farewell to what once was a glacier (冰川).Scientists said it was the first of Iceland's glaciers to disappear because of climate change.
About 100 years ago, the glacier covered almost 6 square miles of a mountainside in western Iceland and measured more than 160 feet thick.
A plaque (匾) has been installed at the site of the former glacier, which reads “In the next 200 years, all our glaciers are expected to follow the same path. This monument is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done.Only you know if we did it.”
The plaque bears the words “A letter to the future”, and is intended to raise awareness about the decline of glaciers and the effects of climate change.
In 1890, the glacier ice covered 16 square kilometres but by 2012, it measured just 0.7 square kilometers, according to a report from the University of Iceland in 2017.
“We made the decision that this was no longer a living glacier, it was only dead ice,it was not moving,” Oddur Sigurdsson, a glaciologist with the Icelandic Meteorological Office, told AFP.
According to a study published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in April, nearly half of the world's heritage sites could lose their glaciers by 2100 if greenhouse gas emissions continue at the current rate.
Sigurdsson said he feared “that nothing can be done to stop it”.
