Life can sometimes seem like an endless series of exhibitions. For those of us involved in the art world, there are times when we're constantly visiting gallery (画廊) after gallery, taking in as much as possible and getting to know the works of artists from far and wide. But there are some artists whose works consistently stand out. Some artists' works stay in the thought and heart of an audience long after the show is over.I've noticed over the years that these are often the artists who have understood fully the skill of telling the story behind their art. These artists aren't just selling paintings — they're selling an experience.
Roxanna Kibsey is one of these artists. Her paintings are often exact description of frozen tundra (冻原) or autumn trees — so bright that they could nearly burn a hole in the canvas. When I met her at an exhibition she couldn't wait to tell me about the place in her paintings.“Where I grew up we had nine months of winter every year. It's really quite a tough place,” she said. She relived a part of her childhood when we chatted in front of her painting. The image brought to my mind memories of driving through the snow-covered countryside during my own first winter in Canada.I could almost hear the crunching ice under my feet as she described to me the countryside she grew up in.
Businessmen may have their elevator_pitch,_but artists, too, need their 30-second story which rolls freely off the tongue. That's why it's so important that for each piece you might be exhibiting, you can conjure up (唤起) a story behind it, and tell that story to your audience in a way that helps them connect with your work, and makes them want to buy a piece.

Robert Jarvik, born on 11 May, 1946 in Michigan and raised in Stamford, is a medical scientist and researcher, who played an important role in the invention of the artificial heart. He was interested in medicine from a young age.He watched his father perform operations and gained a patent for a machine applied in the medical operation before he graduated from high school.
Jarvik attended Syracuse University and considered a career in art. When his father developed heart disease suddenly, he decided then to work on a medical career. He applied to medical schools, but was not admitted to any schools in the USA.Before long, he was admitted to the medical school in Italy and stayed there for two years. He returned to get a degree in medicine from New York University in 1971.
After working for a period of time, Jarvik got a job in the organ transplant program at the University of Utah in 1972.He worked with the director of the program, Willem Kolff, who invented the kidney dialysis (肾透析) machine.
By the time Jarvik came to the University of Utah, the organ program had already developed the primary artificial heart. He improved it by creating a diaphragm (横膈膜), which solved many issues with the heart.Eventually, he created the first artificial heart in 1981, the Jarvik-7, to be placed in a human patient, which was considered one of the most important inventions in human history.
Barney Clark, a retired dentist suffering from serious heart disease, received the Jarvik-7 transplant on 2 December, 1982.He lived for 112 days after the operation, but the transplant was considered a success.Though receiving criticism for the risk referred to transplant an artificial heart, the Jarvik-7 still became very important for patients who were waiting for a heart. In 1987, Jarvik moved to New York City and formed Jarvik Research Inc.He began developing a new heart — the Jarvik 2000.This smaller machine fits inside a patient's heart rather than replacing the entire organ.

Is there a “success personality” — some winning combination of qualities that leads almost essentially to achievement If so, exactly what is that secret success formula (公式), and can anyone develop it
At the Gallop Organization we recently focused in depth on success, digging into the attitudes of 1,500 brilliant people selected at random from Who's Who in America. Our research finds out a number of qualities that occur regularly among top achievers. Here is one of the most important, that is, common sense.
Common sense is the most popular quality shared by the top achievers.Seventy-nine percent award themselves a top score in this quality. And 61 percent say that common sense was very important in contributing to their success.
To most, common sense means the ability to present sound, practical judgments on everyday affairs. To do this, one has to sweep aside extra ideas and get right to the heart of what matters.A Texas oil and gas businessman puts it this way:“The key ability for success is simplifying. In conduction of meeting and dealing with industry, reducing a complex problem to the simplest term is highly important.”
Is common sense a quality a person is born with, or can you do something to increase it The oil man's answer is that common sense can definitely be developed. He attributes (归咎) his to learning how to debate in school.Another way to increase your store of common sense is to observe it in others, learning from their and your own mistakes.
Besides common sense, there are many other factors that influence success: knowing your field, self-reliance, intelligence, the ability to get things done, leadership, creativity, relationships with others, and of course, luck. But common sense stands out.If you develop these qualities, you'll succeed. And you might even find yourself listed in Who's Who someday.

14.What do we know about common sense

Crying Mother
Coming home from school that dark winter day so long ago, I was filled with excitement of having the weekend off.But I was shocked into stillness by what I saw.Mother was seated at the far end of the sofa, crying with the second-hand green typewriter on the table. She told me that she couldn't type fast and then she was out of work.
My shock and embarrassment at finding mother in tears was a perfect proof of how little I understood the pressures on her.Sitting beside her on the sofa, I began very slowly to understand.“I guess we all have to fail sometimes.” Mother said quietly.I could sense her pain and the tension of holding back the strong feelings that were interrupted by my arrival.
Suddenly something inside me turned.I reached out and put my arms around her.She broke then. She put her face against my shoulder and sobbed (啜泣).I held her tightly and didn't try to talk.I knew I was doing what I should, what I could and that it was enough. At that moment, feeling Mother's back with feelings, I understood for the first time her being so easy to break. She was still my mother, yet she was something more: a person like me, capable of fear and hurt and failure.I could feel her pain as she must have felt mine on a thousand occasions when I sought comfort in her arms.
A week later Mother took a job selling dry goods at half the salary the radio station offered.“It's a job I can do, though,” she said simply. But the evening practice on the cold green typewriter continued.I had a very different feeling now when I passed her door at night and heard her tapping away across the paper.I knew there was something more going on in there than a woman learning to type.

4.What kind of artists does the author like
A.Those who have great skills.
B.Those who have held many exhibitions.
C.Those who paint scenes of their own hometowns.
D.Those who tell their experience through their paintings.

6.We can learn from Paragraph 2 that ________.
A.Kibsey's work reflects her own life
B.Kibsey had an unhappy childhood
C.Kibsey doesn't like her hometown
D.Kibsey's hometown is beautiful in winter
7.What does the underlined part “elevator pitch” probably refer to
A.A sales introduction. B.A wise choice.
C.A small mistake. D.A modern tool.

C.By discussing research experiments.
D.By comparing opinions from different fields.
9.Why did Jarvik study medicine in Italy

12.Roughly how many people in the survey listed common sense as the most important quality
A.60. B.80.
C.900. D.1,200.
13.In Paragraph 4, the example of the oil and gas businessman is used to prove ________.
A.common sense can be judged
B.common sense means simplifying
C.common sense can be developed
D.common sense is quite complex
14.What do we know about common sense
A.It's rooted in common people.
B.It is a side effect of mistakes.
C.It is taught by our parents.
D.It can be trained by ourselves.
15.What is the best title of the passage
A.Common Sense
B.The Success Personality
C.Personal Qualities
D.A Popular Formula
