Imagine looking for your lost dog. You step into a cave. But instead of the dog, you find beautiful cave paintings. You see paintings of horses, deer, and bison (野牛) that were drawn in black, brown, red and yellow. Your first question would probably be “Who did this?”
This is what happened to four French boys in 1940. They found the Lascaux caves. The paintings the boys discovered in those caves are about 17,000 years old. They were drawn by the ancient people called Cro-Magnon.
Cro-Magnons looked much like people of today. They used tools, such as fishing nets. But their art was extremely good. The main cave at Lascaux is called the Great Hall of Bulls, which has a picture of bulls and horses in many colours. The largest animal is 18 feet long. There are smaller animals, such as bison, stags (牡鹿) and a bear. There is also a strange spotted two-horned (两只角的) animal.
To the left of the main cave are the most famous paintings that are the drawings of animals in many different colours. One painting is called Little Horses. On the ceiling are horses and cows. The most unusual sight may be in the Shaft of the Dead Man where there is a rhinoceros, a carefully drawn dead man, an injured bison and a bird.
Why did Cro-Magnon artists do these beautiful drawings on cave walls Did the drawings call upon some magic power Did the Cro-Magnon people hope that the drawings would bring good luck There is one thing the paintings seem to tell us. The Cro-Magnons were interested in the world. They looked at beauty and they understood it.

D.Drawings of horses are on the walls of the Lascaux caves.

People have been painting pictures for at least 30,000 years. The earliest pictures were painted by people who hunted animals. They used to paint pictures of the animals they wanted to catch and kill.Pictures of this kind have been found on the walls of caves in France and Spain. No one knows why they were painted there.Perhaps the painters thought that their pictures would help them to catch these animals.Or perhaps human beings have always wanted to tell stories in pictures.
About 5,000 years ago, the Egyptians and other people in the Near East began to use pictures as a kind of writing. They drew simple pictures or signs to represent things and ideas, and also to represent the sounds of their language. The signs these people used became a kind of alphabet (字母).The Egyptians used to record information and to tell stories by putting picture writing and pictures together. When an important person died, scenes and stories from his life were painted and carved on the walls of the place where he was buried (埋葬).For the Egyptians, pictures still had magic power. So they did not try to make their way of writing simple. The ordinary people could not understand it.
These days, we can write down a story, or record information, without using pictures. But we still need pictures of all kinds: drawing, photographs, signs and diagrams. We find them everywhere: in books and newspapers, in the street, and on the walls of the places where we live and work.Pictures help us to understand and remember things more easily, and they can make a story much more interesting.

I was responding to a call from a small brick flat in a quiet part of town.I assumed I was being sent to pick up some party-goers, or someone who had just had a fight with a lover, or a worker heading to an early shift at some factory for the industrial part of town.
When I arrived at 2:30 a.m., the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.Under such circumstances, many drivers just honk (按喇叭) once or twice, wait a minute, then drive away. But I had seen too many weak people who depended on taxis as their only means of transportation.
Unless a situation smelled of danger, I always went to the door.
This passenger might be someone who needs my assistance, I reasoned to myself. So I walked to the door and knocked.“Just a minute,” answered a frail, elderly voice.I could hear something being dragged across the floor. After a long pause, the door opened.A small woman in her 80s stood before me.She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat, like somebody out of a 1940s movie.By her side was a small nylon suitcase.
The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls, no equipment on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.
“Would you carry my bag out to the car?” she said.I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman. She took my arm, and we walked slowly toward the cab.
She kept thanking me for my kindness.“It's nothing,” I told her.“I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”

Born into a poor family, two of the Durers' children still had a dream for art, but they knew their father could not afford to send either of them to the academy (院校).
After discussions, the two boys finally agreed to toss a coin. The loser would go to the nearby mines and support his brother while he attended the academy. Then, when the winner completed his studies, he would support the other brother, either with sales of his artwork or, if necessary, by working in the mines. So they tossed a coin.Albrecht Durer won the toss and went to Nuremberg.Albert went to the dangerous mines and financed his brother, whose work at the academy was almost an immediate success, and by graduation, he was beginning to earn considerable fees for his works.
When the Durer family held a dinner to celebrate Albrecht's homecoming, Albrecht drank a toast to his brother,“Now, Albert, it is your turn to go to Nuremberg and follow your dream, and I will take care of you.”
Albert wiped the tears from his cheeks, glanced at the faces he loved, and said softly, “No, brother. It is too late for me.Look ...look what four years in the mines have done to my hands! The bones in every finger have been broken at least once, and lately I have been suffering from arthritis (关节炎) so badly in my right hand that I cannot even hold a glass to return your toast, much less make lines on canvas (画布) with a pen or a brush. No, brother ...for me it is too late.”

“How did tryouts (选拔赛) go, Shayna?” Mom asked after school. “Terrible,” I said. “Kristie got the part of Cinderella (灰姑娘) while I got none.” I whispered.I ran to my room and started drawing, which always made me feel better.
The next day, Kristie was cheerful. But when the last bell rang, she became nervous and begged me to go with her to rehearsal (排练).In the great hall, Ms Carson, director of the play, pulled an old cardboard (卡纸) castle onto the middle of the stage. It was brown with small windows and doors.Ms Carson turned on the music, and Kristie and the Prince started dancing. Finally as the curtain came down, the rehearsal ended.
“When will we get the real sets (舞台背景)?” Kristie pointed to the cardboard castle. “These are the real sets,” Ms Carson said. “We don't have an art teacher this year.So that's the best we could do.”
Kristie and I walked outside. “You were great,” I said. “Everyone will love the play.” “Thanks,” Kristie said. “But did you see the sets They were really terrible.” I thought for a moment.Maybe there's something we can do.I spent that evening drawing and on the next morning I showed my ideas to Ms Carson and she liked them.Over the next two weeks, a corner of the lunchroom was filled with cardboard and paints. And lots of kids painting.

Chinese painting, also known as the traditional national painting, one of the traditional paintings with a long history, has its unique and independent system.Using brushes, ink, and Chinese pigments (天然颜料), a painting is drawn on a special kind of paper (Xuan paper) or silk. The traditional subjects are figures, landscapes, flowers and birds.
In comparison with Western painting, Chinese painting has its own artistic characteristics. After a careful study of the object, a painter can discover the rules of its structure, and then produce it by the mind's eye.It is not merely a simple copy, but it combines the object with the artistic concept of the producer, turning a natural image into an “artistic image”.The object can show the artist's feelings and personality to achieve the effect of “being alike not only in appearance, but also in spirit”.Not all the objects are to be drawn on the paper, and much space is left for the imagination. The use of lines is important in Chinese painting.Clear, swift, sharp and changeable lines are combined with the push, point and press of the brush and ink to show the quality of the object and variations of tone (色调).Ancient Chinese artists listed 18 different ways of drawing lines with the brush in figure painting.Different ways of creating lines are used when painting a landscape, flowers and birds, clouds, and bamboos.
Traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy are different branches of art stemming (起源) from the same origin. They use the same kind of tools and all the lines used in painting are variations of the points and lines of calligraphy.Though they are different artistic forms, they are closely linked in terms of their expression of thoughts and feelings. They influence each other to create another artistic feature.
