UNIT 9 课时跟踪检测(二) 语言运用综合练
Ⅰ.阅读理解
Among the four skills in learning English, which one of these is the “odd-man-out”? The answer is speaking. The other three you can do alone on your own. But you can't really speak alone! Speaking to yourself can be “dangerous” because men in white coats may come and take you away!
Where can you find people to speak English And how can you practice speaking when you are alone
At school — If you pay to go to a language school, you should use the opportunity to speak. If your teacher asks you to speak in pairs or groups with other students, try to say as much as possible. Don't worry about your mistakes. Just speak!
Conversation clubs — Many cities around the world have conversation clubs where people can exchange one language for another. Look in your local newspaper to find a conversation club near you. They are usually free although some may charge a small entrance fee (费用).
Shopping — Even if you don't want to buy anything, you can ask questions about products that interest you in a shop. “How much does this cost?” “Can I pay by cheque?” Often you can start a real conversation — and it costs you nothing!
Café and bars — There are often American,Britain, Irish and Australian bars in many large cities. If you can find one, you'll probably meet many people speaking English as a first or second language.
Language is all around you — Everywhere you go, you find language. Shop names, street names, advertisements, notices, and car numbers ...When you walk down the street, practice reading the words and numbers that you see. Say them to yourself. It's not exactly a conversation, but it will help you to “think” in English. But don't speak too loud!
Songs and videos — Repeat the words of an English song singing with the music until it becomes automatic. It's good practice for your memory and for the mouth muscles that you need for English.
Above all, speak as much as possible! Make_as_many_mistakes_as_possible! When you know that you have made a mistake, you know that you have made progress!

Schools across the world are trying to come up with solutions to keep students active. Some are replacing traditional classroom chairs with exercise balls or standing desks. At Ward Elementary School in Winston, North Carolina, students have adopted a new program that requires riding fixed bikes while reading.
“Read and Ride” is the creation of school counselor Scott Ertl, who came up with the idea while he was exercising and reading at the gym.Believing it would be a fun way to convince students to become more active, he placed one in the corner of his classroom and encouraged them to use it during independent reading classes.
It was so popular that Ertl decided to add more bikes and offer the Read and Ride program to the entire school.Today Ward Elementary has a dedicated exercise room filled with bikes that can be used by students while completing their daily reading assignments.
Besides making reading more fun, the program also helps students exercise at a comfortable pace without the pressure that comes with regular sports-related activities. It is also a perfect way to release energy during days when the weather is not helpful to outdoor activities.
Most importantly, however, are the program's academic benefits.A year after Read and Ride was introduced at Ward Elementary School, students actively involved in the program demonstrated an astonishing 83% reading proficiency. Those who had not taken advantage of the exercise bikes tested at a much lower, 41%.
Though the substantial improvement in academic achievement cannot all be attributed to programs like Read and Ride, experts believe they are a significant contributor. That's because studies have shown that physical activity stimulates (刺激) brain cells and helps prepare it for learning. As word of the difference made by this easy to execute exercise program spreads, don't be surprised to find schools across the country adopt “Read and Ride” for their students.

How to Improve Your Memory
Most of us can lose our train of thought midway through a sentence but when you're a stand-up comic (单口相声演员), it can cause disaster — as comedian Billy Connolly knows. The 70-year-old Scot admitted the fact last week, and he now suffers from worrying about memory loss on stage.__1__ His wife Pamela owes it to years of drinking in his early career.
But absent-mindedness is not just about “senior moments”, says neuropsychologist Dr Iddon. “In a recent study of healthy adults, the average number of memory slips, like putting the coffee jar in the fridge, was around six per week, regardless of age, sex and intelligence,” says Dr Iddon. “__2__” Remembering is an active process and making the most of your memory involves paying better attention, planning and organising.__3__
★Exercise more.
Several studies have shown that exercise is particularly good at improving memory.Exercise is also thought to encourage the growth of new brain cells in the hippocampus — an area of the brain important in memory and learning.
★__4__
So if a joke is learned in the presence of a particular smell, that same smell may arouse the memory for that joke. “More simply, when in an exam, I advise my students to imagine the place in which they were revising as a reminder,” says Andrew Johnson, memory specialist and lecturer in psychology.
★Drink more milk.
Scientists asked 972 people to fill in detailed surveys on their diets and to complete eight difficult tests to check their concentration, memory and learning abilities.__5__
A.Learn more jokes.
B.Connect the memory with the environment.
C.To make matters worse, sometimes he cannot remember his lines.
D.In fact, it is the younger, busier people that are the most absent-minded.
E.Luckily, there are some strategies to help you avoid those embarrassing moments.
F.The best way to strengthen a memory is to go through the information before sleep.
G.Adults who often consumed dairy products did far better in memory tests compared with those who rarely did.

There are various types of learning disabilities and each of them differs from the other in their area of disability, symptoms, treatment, and level of curing chances.Various terms are used to classify them and a person can have one or more than one kind of learning disability.
A very common form is dysphasia which refers to disorder regarding verbal communication. This means that they have difficulty in producing sounds or spelling of words which results in obstacles to speaking out what they are thinking. Also, they have difficulty in understanding verbal expressions of others and their meanings.
Secondly, there is the problem called dyslexia. This refers to the problem in reading, where a person finds difficulty in distinguishing between letters or confusing between similar words, or reading long words or sentences. This problem may not be easily identified and people may confuse it with level of intelligence. This is common, unless it is in a severe form where a person finds it extremely difficult to tell apart certain letters.
Thirdly, there is the problem called dysgraphia which refers to the disorder of facing difficulty in writing. This happens when a person's motor nerves are not governed efficiently and one cannot express thoughts and formulate (系统地阐述) them in written form. Then people suffer from dyscalculia, which refers to similar incompetence with the numbers and the subject of mathematics.
These are the certain kinds of most-common developmental disabilities which can be quickly identified. Research has found causes of these problems arising from complications, during birth, from complicated genetic combinations. However, these disorders often remain throughout life due to neglect or absence of specific kind of treatment and medical care.

There was a rich couple who was throwing a big New Year party at their house. So they went shopping at the market where everything was of high cost and fixed price. They wanted to maintain their level of standard so they didn't mind paying for it.After purchasing all they needed, they called a porter to carry everything and drop it at their home. The porter who came was of an old age, and looked very unhealthy, and his clothes were torn, and he looked as if he wasn't even able to meet his daily needs.
They asked the porter about the charges for delivering their goods to their home. The old porter quoted just $20, well below the market price.Yet, the couple argued and bargained with the porter and finally settled for $15.The porter was struggling to make even one time's meal so he needed anything he could earn.
The couple was very happy thinking how well they bargained with the poor porter and paid him $15 in advance and left after giving the porter their address for delivery. They reached their home and one hour passed, and two hours passed, but the porter still didn't deliver their stuff.
The wife started to get angry at her husband, “I always tell you not to trust such person, but you never listen to me.I am sure instead of delivering the goods to our home, he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire and then to the police station to file the complaint against him.”
They both left towards the market. On their way near the market, they saw another porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter and noticed that he was carrying their goods in his cart! Letting her take the wheel
My daughter, Mia, is 16 and learning to drive. Many parents are freaked out (惊慌失措) about putting their easily distracted teenagers in charge of a fast-moving thing of glass and steel. My wife refused to teach her, leaving the task to me.
I've learned a few things.First, Mia didn't know how to drive at all.She didn't even know where to put the key.It was like watching a chimpanzee try to solve a puzzle.Worse, she couldn't remember that D was for drive, and R meant reverse (倒车).
Then came the road rules.Mia likes to sail past stop signs.I had to explain that “STOP means STOP”.Had she actually read the rule book “Yes,” she said, but she forgot most of it.“It was so boring.”
Although I had been driving her around for her whole life, she hadn't learned anything.
Despite these things, I've also learned that I enjoy teaching her.I think I'm pretty good at it.I am much calmer than I thought I would be.
I also enjoy the one-on-one time we have together. We have some good conversations. So far, we have covered her friends' hairstyles and how stressed she feels after school.I enjoyed communicating with her.
One Sunday evening, we were driving down a narrow back street, deep in conversation, when I realized that the car was moving quite fast.“SLOW DOWN!” I yelled, yanking (猛拉) the hand brake (手刹).We stopped the car and sat in the dark for a minute.“You can't go that fast,” I said.“You don't know enough yet.” I put my hand on her head, “I don't want anything to happen to you.”
“Me neither.” she said.
“Okay, cool,” I said.“Let's go.”
She started the car and we headed back home.

Work Your Mind
Here's something to think about the next time you ask your teacher for help: Struggling with schoolwork on your own can help you learn. According to a recent study, the more you struggle while you are learning new information, the better you can remember it later.
This theory might surprise you. When teachers are presenting new information, they often give students lots of help. But a new study shows this may not be the best way to support learning.“Don't be too quick to get help when learning something new,”education expert Manu Kapur told TIME for Kids.“Try to work on it yourself even if it means trying different ways.”
Kapur came up with the idea that struggling can lead to better learning. Then he tested it out on students in Singapore. He separated students into two groups. In the first group, students were asked to solve math problems with the teacher's help. In the second group, students were asked to solve the same problems by helping one another, instead of getting help from the teacher.
With the teacher's help, students in the first group were able to find the correct answers. Students in the second group did not solve the problems correctly. But they did come up with a lot of good ideas. The students were then tested on what they had learned. The group without any help from a teacher scored much higher than the group who had help. Kapur said working to find the answers helped students understand the process, not just the solution.
Kapur's advice for kids is to put a lot of effort into learning something new rather than going to your teacher for help.“Simply doing a little work or nothing at all won't work,” says Kapur.“The struggle needs to be a genuine attempt to figure out or solve a problem in as many ways as possible.”

D
There is a big question puzzling me. I notice that the kids in my daughter's class refer to their parents' friends as “Mr Jones” or “Mrs Smith”, rather than “Uncle Jones” or “Aunt Smith”. I was quite shocked, having come from a home where it would have been unheard of to refer to my parents' friends by their first names. If I did that, I would be punished for being impolite.
Respect is something that is earned. Unlike many of the other virtues (美德) we try to cultivate in our kids, respect is a bit more complicated. Being respectful is not only necessary when kids are dealing with human relations, but also important for them to succeed.
There are several things that can have a big influence on kids and their ability to be respectful. The first one to consider is that as parents you should set proper examples when you talk to each other, which can have a big effect on a child's concept of respect and show how important respect is. It is easy to become unaware of this kind of behavior, but try your best to be a good example.
The media, as you may have guessed, plays a large part in the increase in disrespect. Dr. Michele Borba, from the Parents Television Council, watched programs for four weeks during the fall season from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and recorded up to 1,173 rude words — nearly five times that of twenty years before. Movies are equally to blame. A movie often contains a large number of profane words. The media should do something for children.
These things and others all contribute to an alarming increase in disrespect in society. If we don't step in and change, we will find ourselves living in a disrespectful society.
语篇解读:本文是一篇议论文。文章论述了学会尊重人对孩子的重要性,并介绍了造成当今社会缺乏尊重的原因。
12.What does the author think of kids' referring to parents' friends by their first names
A.It is common in his family.
B.This kind of behavior sounds funny.
C.This kind of behavior lacks respect.
D.It is OK if the friends are close.
13.What advice does the author give to parents
A.They should correct kids' bad behavior in time.
B.They should choose suitable programs for kids.
C.They should tell kids the importance of being respectful.
D.They should mind their behavior before children.
解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第三段可知,家长们应当为孩子们树立合适的榜样,即家长们应当在孩子面前注意自己的行为。
14.The underlined word “profane” in the fourth paragraph probably means “________”.
A.rude B.simple
C.complicated D.respectful
15.What does the passage mainly talk about
A.It's necessary to teach kids to be respectful.
B.Respect is a virtue.
C.It's important to set an example.
D.Respecting others is respecting yourself.
解析:选A 主旨大意题。根据全文内容可知,文章主要说现在的孩子在礼节方面做得不够好,应该加强对他们这方面的教育,即教孩子们学会尊重是很必要的。

One morning, Joey sat at the kitchen table and read the sports page of the paper. He heard his grandfather coming down the stairs. When his grandfather came into the kitchen, Joey could see he wasn't his usual happy self.
“Morning, Grandfather,” he smiled. His grandfather sat across the table, looking sad.He didn't pick up the paper to read.Instead, he asked, “Joey, is anything happening in town today?” “There's a ball game between Sequoyah Middle School and my school tonight.Would you like to go?” Joey told him.
Joey felt bad for his grandfather. He knew he couldn't read. His grandfather had told him often, “I didn't have the chance to go to school regularly.Looking after the animals and tending to the crops on the farm were much more important in those days than learning to read.”
One day Grandfather asked Joey, “Joey, would you go with me to the grocery store I need several things.” In the store, Joey's grandfather walked up and down the aisles (过道), looking at all the pictures on the cans.He saw a can without a picture on it. “What's in that can?” he asked. Joey, reading the label, said, “It's a can of chicken soup.” His grandfather walked to the meat counter but he couldn't read the prices or the labels. Finally, Grandfather gave Joey the grocery list and stepped out of the store. “I will meet you at the car,” he said.Joey watched him go through the door, and he thought, “I wish I could help him out but I wouldn't know where to begin and how to start.”
The next day was Sunday.Joey went to the library to look through some books when he saw a sign on the library wall.It read, “Do you know somebody who can't read We can help.Just call this number.” Joey wrote the number down, and hurried home. “Somebody can teach you how to read.Just call this number.” Joey explained excitedly to his grandfather.

Paragraph 2:
Months later, Grandfather said to Joey.“I just got a letter from Aunt Helen and let me read it to you.” As Grandfather read, he pronounced each word very slowly. When he finished reading the letter, Joey cried. He was so proud of his grandfather for overcoming a lifelong obstacle that his chest felt as though it was about to burst.Grandfather looked up from the page and locked his tear-filled eyes on Joey.“Grandfather,” said Joey, “good job! I'm so proud of you.” Grandfather smiled back and then broke into a big wide grin.UNIT 9 课时跟踪检测(五) 主题阅读拓展练

8.What can you do when you have doubt on schoolwork
A.Ask your teacher for help.
B.Make it clear by yourself.
C.Ask your classmates to help you.
D.Ask your parents for help.
9.What's Manu Kapur's educational idea on learning new knowledge
A.Give students much help as soon as possible.
B.Let students learn it by themselves in one way.
C.Let students learn it by themselves in the same way.
D.Let students learn it by themselves in different ways.
10.How did Manu Kapur check his idea on better learning
A.By asking questions.
B.By solving art problems.
C.By group comparisons.
D.By solving science problems.
11.What is the most important in learning knowledge
A.Getting teachers' help.
B.Getting students' help.
C.Grasping the learning course.
D.Receiving the final solution.

At thirteen, I was diagnosed (诊断) with a kind of attention disorder. It made school difficult for me. When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not.
In my first literature class, Mrs Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all within 45 minutes. I raised my hand right away and said, “Mrs Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not be able to do it.”
She glanced down at me through her glasses, “You are not different from your classmates, young man.” I tried, but I didn't finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home.
In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn't get much education. But Louis didn't give up. Instead, he invented a reading system of raised dots (点), which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.
Wasn't I the “blind” in my class, being made to learn like the “sighted” students My thoughts spilled out and my pen started to dance. I completed the task within 40 minutes. Indeed, I was not different from others; I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out of his problem, why should I ever give up
I didn't expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day — with an “A” on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words, “See what you can do when you keep trying?”

You're never too old to learn, as the saying goes. For 102-year-old Gerri Cowardin, learning has been a lifelong activity. As a retired (退休的) nurse, she has attended classes offered by Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) in Camarillo, California, along with her 74-year-old daughter, Geri Gretan.Cowardin attended music classes; she enjoys opera.Gretan, who was also a nurse, attended science classes.
“There is no homework, no grades, just learning for the sake of learning,” Gretan said.Gretan says her mother, who trained to be a teacher before changing career paths, has always been an enthusiastic learner.“She loves to read and still does crossword puzzles,” she said.
OLLI program director Nick Fuentes says classes are for learners 50 and up, with most of its students being between ages 65 and 75.He says the institute offers college-level classes taught by university professors and retired professionals in various fields. There are no prerequisite (必备的) requirements for enrollment (入学).Learning is a two-way street in OLLI classrooms.Given that the teachers are often younger than the students, sometimes students can offer personal experiences of the subject at hand, Fuentes says.He also says about 900 students attend their classes.OLLI offers 25 to 30 courses per session (学年).The classes are available Monday through Saturday.
The benefits of lifelong learning are varied too, according to a Pew survey.Nearly 90% of old people said their learning activities “helped them feel more capable and well rounded”. About 70% said learning “opened up new perspectives (观点) about their lives”. And 64% said their learning “helped them make new friends”. Indeed, the social aspect of going to a class with others is an added benefit to mental health, according to brain research.
