William Dunn is the founder of Take a Kid Fishing, a nonprofit organization in Lakeland, Florida, which teaches poor and fatherless kids through the sport of fishing.
A dozen years ago, inspired by his six-year-old fatherless neighbor, Camran, who got angry and shouted at his mom, William asked Camran’s mom for permission to take Camran fishing. Camran was “hooked” from that first trip. The two fished together several times a week, and William saw positive changes in Camran’s behavior. “That’s when I realized that I had the duty to help fatherless kids,” he says.
On weekends, William and a few other volunteers take 20 to 25 kids out fishing on a rental boat, which was supported by the captain of the Double Eagle. Many have never been fishing or even on a boat, so William—or Big Will, as the kids call him—starts by teaching the basics. Then come the life lessons that fishing offers: patience, teamwork and the simple joy of relaxing in the outdoors. Take a Kid Fishing has taken more than 600 fishing trips with almost 2,000 kids who don’t have a father in their lives.
He wants to share his love of fishing with kids who don’t have a father to take them. “I just want to show them that I care about them, that I’m there for them,” he says. Because many kids go on multiple trips, William is able to build relationships with them. He and Camran, now 20, still regularly fish together, and Camran sees Big Will as a father figure.
Take a Kid Fishing has a huge impact, but it started because William wanted to help one kid. Do you know a child who might benefit from your friendship Introduce them to fishing or another hobby you enjoy. You can make a great difference to their life.
24.What contributed to the founding of Take a Kid Fishing
A.Kids’ passion for fishing. B.Teaching poor kids.
C.Fatherless kids’ misfortune. D.Camran’s positive change.
25.What can we know from Paragraph 3
A.Many kids expected fishing experiences. B.Few kids participated in the fishing trips.
C.The organization taught more than basic skills. D.The fishing boat was offered by other volunteers.
26.Which of the following opinion will William Dunn agree with
A.An unhappy child needs a friend. B.Company matters a lot in kids’ lives.
C.Fatherless kids enjoy outdoor activities. D.An experienced captain should care for kids.
27.Which can be a suitable title for the text
A.Fishing Changes Fatherless Kids’ Life B.Friendship Has a Great Impact on Kids
C.Fishing Offers Kids the Joy of Relaxing D.The Love of Fishing Bonds Family Together

Reaching out to support a person when they’re under stress is always a good idea. In fact, a new study suggests that support could be especially important for someone whose genetic quality makes them more likely to develop depression. The study shows the importance of social support to reduce the risk of developing depression symptoms in general.
The study uses data from two very different groups of people under stress: new doctors in the most intense year of training, and older adults whose beloved ones recently died. The finding shows greatest impact of social support in those with highest risk scores for depression.
Compared to other groups of individuals in the study who had low depression risk scores, the doctors and widows with higher risk scores had higher rates of depression after they lost social support, but also had lower rates of depression when they gained social support during stressful times.
Sen, who is the director of the Eisenberg Family Depression Center, adds that even as genetic research reveals more of the DNA variation related to depression tendency, learning how that variation leads to depression is crucial. “Further understanding the different genetic maps associated with sensitivity to loss of social support, lack of sleep, excessive work stress and other risk factors could help us develop personalized guidance for depression prevention,” he said. “In the meantime, these findings reaffirm how important social connections, social support and individual sensitivity to the social environment areas factors in well-being and preventing depression.”
Besides, the data used in the study is based on people of European origin, which limits the ability to generalize the findings to people of other backgrounds. Sen noted that additional work is being done to collect scores based on depression-related genetic characteristics in other populations including people of East Asian and African blood.
28.What does the new study find
A.One’s genetic quality is related to depression.
B.Depression can be passed on among generations.
C.Social support can reduce genetic depression risk.
D.Common people without support tend to feel depressed.
29.How do the researchers carry out the study
A.By studying papers. B.By collecting data. C.By giving examples. D.By doing experiments.
30.What does the underlined word “excessive” mean in Paragraph 4
A.Fertile. B.Extreme. C.Tiny. D.Splendid.
31.What can we infer from the text
A.Depression will lead to DNA variation. B.Genetic maps can guide us to well-being.
C.Further data are to be collected for the study. D.Individual sensitivity is a great depression risk.
D
Plastic pollution is a growing global problem. Simplistic, unhelpful labelling and low recycling rates even in the best-equipped countries are major barriers to tackling this issue.
In a new paper, experts from the University of Exeter and the University of Queensland suggest a new internationally applicable labelling system that moves the focus from recyclability to sustainability.
“We need to empower consumers to make more sustainable choices,” says lead author Stephen Burrows. Instead of “yes-no” recycling labels, which are often misleading, a sustainability scale (等级) could take account of recyclability as well as other factors such as the environmental cost of production, and potential human health risks from additives (添加剂).
“Requiring packaging to carry region-specific directions for disposal (废弃处理) would shift responsibility away from consumers and towards regulators and plastic producers. This is vital because the mix of plastic products is confusing, and industry must be responsible for clear instructions on how best to dispose of plastic items. The same is true for the chemical additives found in many plastics. Requiring producers to list all additives would be a major step towards informing the public and helping them make decisions regarding environmental impact and human health,” says Burrows.
At present, about 368 million tonnes of plastic is produced worldwide each year. The researchers stress that their recommendations should not reduce the urgent need to use less plastic—especially single-use items.
Professor Tamara Galloway, from the University of Exeter, says: “Our recommendations for a sustainability scale are designed to reduce some of the confusion around plastic disposal. The ultimate aim is to protect the environment and human health from the harmful effects of plastic waste.”
Professor Kevin Thomas, from the University of Queensland, says: “We hope that our recommendations initiate (发起) a reassessment of plastic labelling and that carrying out a sustainability scale will allow individuals to make informed decisions on how they use plastics.”
32.What are plastic producers required to do
A.Make their plastic packaging attractive. B.Offer specific instructions for regulators.
C.Remind consumers to assess health risks. D.Show consumers plastic additive content.
33.What do the researchers stress
A.Plastic use needs reducing. B.Plastic is being widely produced.
C.Single-use plastics are preferred. D.Producers have to list all additives.
34.What do Galloway and Thomas say about their recommendations
A.They allow individuals to care about their health.
B.They instruct individuals to get rid of plastic waste.
C.They encourage individuals to give tips on plastic disposal.
D.They help individuals reduce harmful effects of plastic waste.
35.What does the text mainly talk about
A.Plastic labelling needs a sustainability scale. B.There is a need for “yes-no” recycling labels.
C.The consumers need to label their plastic items. D.It is challenging to move from recyclability to sustainability.

M: In 1936. She entered the same college called Smith College that year. But she dropped out of school a year later.
W: Didn’t she like her college life then
M: Of course she liked her college life. She dropped out of college because her father thought that women should not receive a college education. So she had to work and help support her family.

W: Hopefully he will use the same exam, because I’m going to spend most of my time studying the Civil War. It is a huge section and that is what he lectured the most on in class.
M: That is probably the best way to go.
W: Alright. Thanks for the information. I’ll go to the library now.
M: Good luck.
