Ⅰ.阅读理解
A restaurant manager is changing the students' lives for the better at an elementary school in Virginia Beach, Va., writing empowering messages on bananas being offered in the school restaurant.
Stacey Truman has held the position at Kingston Elementary School for nine years, but recently decided to start making the “talking bananas”, as the kids call them, to encourage the students. “I do it for my kids at home, so why not bring it here and do it for them because they are like my kids,” Truman said. The bananas have several encouraging messages like “Never give up!”, “You are wise!” and “Keep trying!” among others.
Truman said, “I came up with most of the messages myself because I would just think about what you would tell a kid or what you would want to hear yourself.” Truman's sweet behaviour did not just have an effect on the children, however. School principal Sharon Shewbridge saw the bananas and posted a picture of the fruit on Twitter, where it started receiving worldwide attention.
“Truman's almost embarrassed about all the attention,” Shewbridge said. “She just wanted it not to be known to the public. But I said this is so simple and amazing — and it has such an effect on kids.”
“It's simple, but these words can help them be more courageous and realize that they are good enough,” Shewbridge added. “I hope that other schools see it's an easy way to get a kind message to kids.”

An honest mistake
Karie double-checked the words on her spelling test. If she got 100 percent today, she'd win her class' First-Quarter Spelling Challenge and a brand new dictionary. Plus, Ms McCormack had promised to do a handstand if anyone got a perfect score.
Three more words to go. N-i-c-e-l-y. Q-u-i-c-k-l-y. H-o-n-e-s-t-y. Wait! She'd spelled honesty, not honestly. She hurriedly erased the t-y and wrote l-y before handing in her paper.
Ms McCormack graded the test papers at the break. Meanwhile, Karie sat restlessly in her seat with her fingers crossed. Then, Ms McCormack walked to the front of the room and cleared her throat. As if she were an Olympic gymnast, Ms McCormack's feet flipped (空翻) into the air.
“Congratulations, Karie! You did it!” she announced while upside down.
The whole class burst into applause! Ms McCormack righted herself and presented Karie with her prize. Karie smiled as she read the label on the box.
To Karie Carter, for her perfect first-quarter score in spelling.
“Everything OK?” Mom asked as Karie burst through the front door after school. Karie didn't answer. As if by magic, she took out her spelling test paper and prize and showed them to her mother. Mom hugged her, asking her to put the test paper on the fridge so that Dad could see it when he got home.
Karie took another look at the test paper before putting it on the fridge. Her hands stopped in the mid air. She just couldn't believe her own eyes. Honesly
YES! H-O-N-E-S-L-Y!
Mom sensed something unusual and asked why. Karie stuffed the test paper into her backpack and explained that she was just too excited. Mom brought her some tea. Yes, a “t” was exactly what she needed.
After drinking a little, Karie plodded (沉重地走) down the hall, lost in thought. How could she tell the class she hadn't earned the prize after all That Ms McCormack did the handstand for nothing

Paragraph 1:
Later Dad came in with excitement. “Where's your spelling test, Karie?” Dad asked eagerly. Karie looked away from her father. Anyhow, she reluctantly went to her room and pulled out the test paper. Dad fixed his eyes on the paper, a pleasant smile lifting the corner of his mouth. “I'm proud of you, sweetie. We need to celebrate it tonight.” Karie pretended to be smiling all the time. Meanwhile a sense of guilt rose inside her. Feeling she didn't deserve the prize, she had a sleepless night for the first time in her life.
Paragraph 2:
The next morning, Karie went to school earlier than usual. Ms McCormack was unlocking the classroom. “You're an early bird.” Ms McCormack said. Karie's hands trembled. She handed her teacher the spelling paper and the dictionary. “I can't keep this. I misspelled ‘honestly’ and you didn't catch it.” For a moment Ms McCormack stood quietly reading the label on the dictionary. Then picking up her pen, she crossed out the word “perfect” and wrote “honest” before returning the dictionary to Karie. “Keep this. But for honesty.”WELCOME UNIT 课时跟踪检测(三) 阅读写作融会练

Clayton Ward's family owned a school bus company in Tennessee, and when he moved to Massachusetts, he followed in their footsteps and became a school bus driver. Ward attended college 10 years ago but dropped out after a few semesters(学期).
He didn't realize, at first, that the students he was transporting to and from school helped him rediscover his desire to go back to school and earn his college degree.
“I really enjoy working with students, and during the bus routes, we would chat about their classes. As a history lover, I would share lessons that I learned in school. Some of the students would tell me they wanted me to be their teacher. I think they only said that because I was a different person than their regular teachers, educating them in a different way to arouse their interest. But, however small that mention was from those kids, it gave me the motivation (动力) to complete a goal I had started years ago,” said Ward.
He enrolled (登记入学) at MassBay Community College in May 2019, working full-time driving the school bus while attending classes. “I would drive my route in the morning and afternoon, take a class in between shifts and take night classes and classes online to complete my degree requirements,” Ward said. “Many years ago, I heard a quote from my former middle and high school band teacher, which has helped me get to where I am now. My teacher said, ‘Discipline is not doing what you are supposed to be doing when everyone is watching. Discipline is doing what you are supposed to be doing when nobody is watching.’”
In just one year, Ward has completed his Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts and will transfer to Framingham State University to pursue his bachelor's degree in History. He will be recognized at MassBay's commencement ceremony (毕业典礼) for receiving the following awards: Highest Honors, the All-College Award for his 4.0 GPA, and for having the highest GPA in the Liberal Arts program.

When my daughter Sara was in the fifth grade, she came to me with a problem.“Marcy hates me!” she cried.“Because Kathy is my friend, too. She wants me to be her friend and nobody else's.You talk to Marcy. You tell her that I want to be her friend, but I can have other friends, too!”
Oh! I looked at her for a few moments, wondering how I got into this mess, when suddenly an idea came to me.
Picking up two baskets from the living room, I explained, “When everyone is born, he or she has a little basket. This little one here is yours. The big one is mine.As you grow, so does the basket. You can see your little basket is inside mine because when you were born, there were too many things you couldn't do for yourself.I did everything you couldn't do on your own.”
She nodded.
“Well, as you grew older and began to do some things on your own, I began placing a few more things in your basket. When you learned to tie your shoes, that went in your basket.”
She said softly, “I can tie my own shoes.”
“Right. As you grow older, there will be more and more things you must do on your own.” As I spoke, I gradually took her basket out of mine and handed it to her.“You will finally carry your own basket with things only you can do.”
She looked up at me and said, “I understand. There are some things that I have to do for myself because they are in my basket.”

Finally came Wednesday! I walked onto campus feeling nervous even though I had walked these same grounds for two years because my junior high school is next door. Everything looked and felt different now that I was in senior high.
I looked at my schedule. First period — German. Our German teacher was very friendly and I liked her from the beginning. What I didn't like, though, was that I was surrounded by students from other grades, with only five familiar faces.
Then I had to walk all the way across campus and up three flights of stairs to get to my second period — biology. Our teacher's name is Ms Compeau, and I think that she will teach us a lot this year because she is very to the point. She also has her unique way of saying “be quiet,” she says “alligator.” She explained that she is the king, or should I say queen, of the class because alligators are the “king of the swamps (沼泽).”
My third class was English. After surviving two periods without too much of a challenge, I began to feel good. However, the third period changed everything. Mr V., my English teacher, told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. I love reading and writing, but 40 essays AP-level books Now I was scared. He also talked about how important it was to be focused. Last year was not a very “focused” year for me. While doing homework, I was often talking on the phone, or busy with a conversation on Facebook. I planned on stepping it up this year because I wanted to stay an honor student.

It's school time again! You're probably feeling anxious and maybe a little frightened that summer vacation is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things:new teachers, new friends, and even a new school.Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while.Let's find out more about going to a new school.
Most teachers kick_off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the things you'll be doing this year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules and school rules so you'll know what's allowed and what's not. Please pay close attention.
You might already know a lot of people in your class on the first day, but it's a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don't.Make the first move and you'll be glad about what you did, and so will your new friends!
Seeing friends you haven't seen in a while can make the first day a good one.You can make the day feel special by wearing clothes that you really like.Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of sneakers (运动鞋).It can also make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you'll be needing. But make sure that you pack them the night before in case you don't have time in the morning.
