Many of us have heard of Alex Honnold, who made history in 2018 when he became the first man to climb EI Capitan without ropes or safety equipment. But his mother, Dierdre Wolownick, just became the oldest woman to conquer the famous peak: She reached the top on September 23 — the morning of her 70th birthday.
Dierdre, the writer and language teacher, decided to take up climbing as a means of connecting more with her son. In 2008, accompanied by her son Alex, she visited a climbing gym and completed 12 routes that first day with his help, but it was months before she worked up the courage to return and practice on her own.
Dierdre became committed to the sport, and began to meet friends and sharpen her skills. She scaled (攀登) parts of Half Dome Trail and Cathedral Peak at a time when many people at her age are thinking about retirement and slowing down. The writer would go on to publish a book about her climbing experiences with Alex called The Sharp End of Life: A Mother's Story.
“As a mother, I am impressed by this role exchange process. Parents and children often wind up changing roles in life as they get older,” she writes in her book.“But never, I thought, is that transformation as obvious as when they climb together.”
On September 23, Dierdre and her friends set out in the dark, at 6 am. The route is steep (陡峭的) enough to require all fours, grabbing rocks and trees and whatever else will hold the weight. Yet despite all difficulties, the team made it to the top.“It was really inspiring to watch her and then to have her on top with all of us,” said one of Dierdre's friends. “There was a special look on everyone's face. We knew where we were. We knew how amazing the moment truly was.”

Sports Help Build Self-Esteem
Studies show that early positive experiences of sports develop healthy, confident players.
Professor Margaret Talbot, president of the International Council for Sport Science and Physical Education, once wrote that sports, dance, and other challenging physical activities are powerful ways of helping young people learn to “be themselves”.She suggested that these sorts of activities — when they are appropriately presented — can teach people to question limiting possibilities they might have picked up, and come to view themselves and their potential (潜力) in a new way.
Mina Samuels — the author of How Strong Women Make Happy Lives wrote: “Over the years that followed my ‘discovery’ of running, my self-confidence grew, and feeding off the accomplishments I achieved in sports — setting new personal bests, winning a little local race, surviving the setbacks of injuries and marathons gone wrong — I discovered an ability within myself that I never knew I had. I wasn't just physically stronger than I expected, I thought of myself as a different person, as someone with more potential, broader horizons, bigger possibilities. I saw that I could push myself and take risks, not just in sports, but elsewhere, too. The competition in sports, as in life, was not with someone else, it was with myself. To ‘compete’ was to discover my own potential to do better, to hold my own self to a higher standard, to expect more of myself — and deliver.”
These comments highlight what has become one of the most important areas of research in youth sports: the role they can play in developing self-esteem (a feeling of pride in yourself).
A number of studies show that sports and other physical activities can contribute to the development of self-esteem. For example, Canadian scientists found that sixth-grade students who were more physically active had considerably higher levels of self-esteem. A study in Switzerland found that teenagers who took part in sports clubs were healthier, including being better socially adjusted, feeling less anxious, and generally being happier about their lives. Similar findings were reported in a study of Latino students, where participation in school sport was found to be greatly associated with self-esteem.
The great developmental psychologist Jean Piaget argued that the foundations of self-esteem were laid between the ages of about 6 and 11 years of age. Importantly, this is also the time when children are most likely to be introduced to sports. It is impossible to overstate the importance of positive early sporting experiences for the development of both self-esteem and on-going participation in sports and other physical activities. Teachers, coaches, and parents have a responsibility to ensure that these experiences “catch” as many children as possible.

What Is Self-tracking All about
Have you ever monitored (监测) something about yourself Perhaps you've tracked (追踪) how many kilometers you've run, how many hours you've slept or how many calories you've eaten in a day.
If so, you've taken part in a movement called the “Quantified Self Movement”. Individuals (个人) gather information about their daily activities in this popular movement, also called self-tracking. This may sound difficult, but technology is making the process easier.
Perhaps you've wanted to change a bad habit but couldn't. Self-tracking may be your answer. The idea is to take information about your everyday activities and analyze them to help form a healthier lifestyle.
Recently, tools such as smartphones, journals and apps, along with newly published wearable things, are making self-tracking extremely easy. Today, one can use a smart watch to record personal data including sleeping hours, stress levels, heart rate and mood.
So why does a person self-track Someone may be trying to lose weight or improve their sleep patterns.Another person feels tired after eating. Self-tracking could help him to know what foods make him sleepy and watch his diet.
Monitoring daily activities isn't a new concept. In past years, athletes and their coaches kept notes detailing nutrition (营养), training and sleep patterns in order to achieve an athletic goal. Similarly, doctors have also helped patients to record parts of their lifestyles and eating habits to help fight allergies, headaches and other health problems. However, it wasn't until 2007 that magazine editors Gary Wolf and Kim Kelly, who started tracking every move they made, coined the term “Quantified Self”. Wolf says that the new tools will change our sense of self with the purpose of making us more effective in the world.
Although self-tracking has many advantages, Dennis Nash, president of Data Speaks Health Solutions, says self-tracking has its drawbacks (不利之处). Once people start tracking their daily activities, it can become an addition people like to do often. Also, they might begin to worry too much about their health.
While self-tracking doesn't guarantee (保证) that one's quality of life will improve, it can highlight (突出,强调) the importance of eating well and exercising daily. After all, the Quantified Self Movement's focus is motivating people to apply enough energy to make healthier choices.

My Favorite Sport
When it comes to my favorite sport, what I'd like to say is that I like swimming best.
I was often taken to a pool to practice swimming by my mother when I was young. Whenever I saw my mother dive into the swimming pool, I couldn't help following her bravely. Gradually, I became interested in swimming. Swimming serves as a good way to relax myself. What's more, I become stronger and stronger because of the frequent swimming.
I find so much fun from swimming and it greatly enriches my life.
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Our daughter Alissa passed away after a war with a serious illness on August 25. Her life was not easy. She grew to only four feet nine inches tall and experienced some learning problems. In her late teens, she had pneumonia (肺炎) three times in six months, which required her to go into hospital. However, Alissa had a great spirit and managed problems with courage and determination.
The death of Alissa left a big hole in our lives — as if someone took away all of the happiness and joy. As the first anniversary (周年纪念日) came, we needed something to move us forward. That was a small dog we named Baci.
My wife, Susan, and youngest daughter Jenna had been looking for a dog. I was not so enthusiastic (热切的), but they continued on. On September 26 the next year, Baci arrived in our lives from a pet store. That night, I came home from work and waited for Susan and Jenna to arrive with Baci. Jenna walked through the door and handed me this small ball of hair. I put Baci on my hands, and the first thing he did was lick (舔) my hands. It was love from the first doggy kiss, with many more to follow.
Baci quickly became part of the family, and suddenly the air of the house changed. He liked to take walks around the lake at Belmont State Park. He did crazy things that made us laugh. He would put his ball near me and wait for me to throw it into the front yard. Then he would find out the ball and repeat the game.
Baci was not a perfect dog. He kept others from touching his toys. He was stubborn at times. He would go through the bathroom garbage. He was not friendly with other dogs in public.
But Baci gave us a lot of love. When we came home, he would come to the door happily. He would come up and give me kisses.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

Unluckily, as Baci celebrated his 10th birthday, he started having health problems. I found there was a time when Baci always lay on the ground lazily and had no interest in food. Later we were told that he had a serious illness. Gradually, he became weaker and weaker. It appears that our days with Baci are coming to a close. I am preparing myself for the terrible day when I will have to say goodbye to Baci.
Paragraph 2:
Baci was something we needed to move us forward in our journey through sadness. He is an unexpected gift for which I will always be thankful. This crazy small dog has made a difference to a family fighting against the death of a daughter and sister. I still remember the days when Baci put his ball near me and waited for me to throw it away, which made us laugh happily. That memory of Baci will live lovingly in my heart for a valuable part of my life.UNIT 3 单元验收评价(二)—仿真高考检测

A.To know her son better.
B.To celebrate her birthday.
C.To seek writing inspiration.
D.To set an example for the old.
5.Which of the following best describes Dierdre
A.Patient. B.Courageous.
C.Intelligent. D.Generous.
解析:选B 推理判断题。根据第二段中的“it was months ... on her own”和最后一段中的“despite all difficulties, the team made it to the top”可以看出,Dierdre 很有勇气,故B项正确。
6.What does the last paragraph tell about Dierdre's climbing journey
A.It was worth the efforts.
B.It took days to be completed.
C.It was arranged on her own.
D.It required special equipment.
7.What may be a suitable title for the text
A.Mountain climbing benefits health
B.A mother goes beyond her son's wish
C.Climb together, bond closer
D.Slow down, better your life

8.According to Professor Margaret Talbot, ________.
A.sports activities should be more challenging
B.sports can help people discover their potential
C.challenging sports do harm to people's self-esteem

9.The author writes the third paragraph to ________.
A.tell us Mina Samuels' interesting stories
B.share what Mina Samuels' book is about
C.show that doing sports helps Mina Samuels in many ways
D.explain that doing sports has its advantages and disadvantages
10.Studies in Switzerland and Latino showed teenagers who often join in sports ________.
A.build self-esteem earlier
B.have more good experiences
C.are more sensitive to judgments
D.are healthier both physically and mentally
11.According to the studies and personal experiences, the influence of sports on teenagers is ________.
A.positive B.confused
C.uncertain D.disappointed

A.it collects personal data and leads to self-improvements
B.it records how many hours you sleep a day
C.it watches and tries to change your eating habits
D.it can help to increase your movement
13.The writer mentions tools such as smartphones and apps in Paragraph 4 to show ______.
A.we depend too much on them
B.it is easier to do self-tracking
C.they do harm to people's health
D.equipment is necessary to do self-tracking
14.Self-tracking was firstly put forward by ______.
A.scientists of Data Speaks Health Solutions
B.athletes and their coaches
C.doctors and their patients
D.two magazine editors
15.You can find this article in the part of______.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
