Ⅰ.阅读理解
If Confucius(孔子)were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He'd need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.
While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It's nothing personal. Most Americans don't even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.
But this doesn't mean that Americans don't care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.
In the past two decades, the Chinese study programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities.More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in a lot of countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy (哲学).Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Western philosophy.Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power to the United States.Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.
So the old thinker's ideas are still alive and well.
Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.
As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.

Ⅰ.阅读理解
Cold weather has a great effect on how our minds and our bodies work. Maybe that is why there are so many expressions that use the word “cold”. For centuries, the body's blood has been linked (联系) closely with the emotions. People who show no human emotions or feelings, for example, are said to be cold-blooded. Cold-blooded people act in a cruel way. They may do brutal (野蛮的) things to others, and not by accident. For example, a newspaper says the police are searching for a cold-blooded killer. The killer murdered someone, not in self-defense. He seemed to kill with no emotion.
Cold can affect other parts of the body, the feet, for example. Heavy socks can warm your feet, if your feet are really cold. But there is an expression — to get cold feet — that has nothing to do with cold or your feet. The expression means being afraid to do something you decided to do. For example, you agree to be president of an organization. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned. All the work of the organization will be your duty. You are likely to get cold feet about being president when you understand the situation.
Cold can also affect your shoulder. You “give someone the cold shoulder” when you refuse to speak to him. You treat him in a distant, cold way. The expression probably comes from the physical act of turning your back towards someone, instead of speaking to him face to face. You may give a cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you or to someone who has lied about you to others.
“A cold fish” is not a fish. It is a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and shows no love or warmth. A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone.
“Out in the cold” is an expression often heard. It means not getting something that everybody else got. A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise. He was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be.

It was 8 am. Kathy, a 25-year-old nurse, had just finished a 12-hour night shifts at a hospital. She was tired, but glad to be sailing along highway to where she lived. Although the local government had posted a snow alert (预警), the calm grey sky convinced Kathy the drive would be safe. “I figured I'd be in bed in an hour,” she says.
Snow began when she was halfway home. Listening to the radio, Kathy learned the highway was closed because a tractor had slid off the road. She texted some friends and her mom, and tried not to sleep as she waited.
After a couple of hours, however, conditions worsened. Strong winds began rocking Kathy's car. She couldn't see anything outside, and snow was drifting up her doors. It was, she says, “a total whiteout and rows of cars and trucks.”
Late in the afternoon a police officer came and asked if she was in any difficulty. She said she was fine. She asked the police officer if there was any way to get past the trucks. “No, ma'am,” he answered. “You're not going anywhere.”
Once as it got dark, Kathy began to worry. She texted his brother Cris, telling him to drive snowmobiling buddy (雪地汽车) to get to the highway and find her.
As Cris rode slowly alongside the rows of cars and trucks, people would roll down their windows and ask for help. “I was the first person they'd seen in six hours.” He explained he was picking up his sister. He told them, “Nobody's coming and I can't take you.”
Near 10 pm Cris reached Kathy. He directed Kathy to pull her car onto the shoulder and asked her to get into his snowmobiling buddy.
As they headed for home, the fun started. About five kilometres into the journey, Cris made a mistake. What he thought was a shallow ditch (浅沟) turned out to be a deep trough (水槽). Instead of coming out the other side, they just kept going down. They were trapped. And feathery snow was over their heads.

They began to worry and were convinced they had to stay in their snowmobiling buddy for the night. Suddenly, a good idea occurred to Kathy. She took off one of her clothes and burned it. Seeing the fire, people ran over and managed to pull her car out with all their efforts, making Cris ashamed for his refusal to others.
Paragraph 2:

Of the three dialects, British English has the most confusing grammar and spelling rules. This is probably because the development of English has been under the control of the upper class. The modern English language came into being in the 18th century. The upper class who spoke French wanted to show their influence and make themselves different from the uneducated working people. In other words, British English reflects the English character with class.
The US dialect is generally recognised as the easiest to pared with British English, its spelling is more connected with its pronunciation. And its grammatical rules are much easier to follow. What's more, its words are simpler to pronounce. For foreigners, it's much easier to learn. That's why American English is more popular in the world.
The reason why American English is simpler than British English is connected with its special history. British English was mainly influenced by the upper class. But American upper class didn't exist when American English was born. American English was based on the dialects spoken by working people from different countries. So the formation of American English was based on a rule to help all the working people with different cultural backgrounds communicate more easily.
Australian English is different from British and American English. It is the most vulgar(粗俗的)of the three.Actually it has a tendency to show its invention, disrespect and humor. At times, this can make it almost impossible to understand and quite impolite to some educated speakers. That is partly connected with special identity of the early settlers.

English is one of the most difficult languages to master. Even if you might not yet sound like someone born and raised speaking the language, you should still congratulate yourself on how far you've come. Remember that practice makes perfect. So keep working at it and your skill level will certainly improve.
Create an English environment for yourself. __1__ The more you hear the language, the better you'll understand how and when to use common words and phrases and how the language is pronounced.
Practise speaking English every chance you get, whether at school, at work or speaking to family and friends. When you speak in your native language, ask yourself, “How would I say that in English?”
Watch yourself speak English in the mirror. __2__ And practise changing anything you don't like. If you're uncomfortable making up things to say to yourself, just read your lessons aloud.
Use confident body language while you speak English. Even if you're having trouble pronouncing words or remembering phrases, don't keep your head down. Speak in a natural, conversational tone (语气); keep your back and head straight, and your chin (下巴) up. If you're in a relaxed setting, put your hands behind your head and put your feet up. __3__
Find a friend who speaks fluent English and wants to learn your language. __4__ Increase your confidence by knowing you have something valuable to teach, as well as something to learn.
__5__ Instead of saying “I'm not good at this,” say “Every day I'm getting better.”

Having moved to a new city, I was looking for things to do in my spare time. I intended to meet new people, for I am a social person. Hearing that the Business Confucius Institute(BCI) was offering Chinese evening classes on the university campus, I was determined to sign up for Level 1 class.
This initial (最初的) decision was made on a whim. I had no grand career goals or plans to travel to China in the near future. Learning a new language was the fact that it was not something I had done before. My mother is from Spain and I was raised with two languages, but there is a huge difference between acquiring a language in childhood and learning one in adulthood. I expected to find out how I would get along with Chinese.
In each class my Chinese teacher would teach us what seemed like thousands of new words and expressions, and then get us to act them out in role plays reproducing basic Chinese introductions and conversations. After each lesson I felt as though my brain had been placed in a deep oil pot for a long time. But then, I began to realize that the more my brain ached right after class, the more information I had taken in. I found that Chinese words and expressions we had covered would rush unexpectedly into my head at any moment, such as when I was in the shower or driving to work. I have now completed the Business Confucius Level 3 class and am able to hold basic conversations with Chinese people on a variety of topics.
This experience helped me a lot.Recently I landed a new job at the University of Leeds' School of Law, providing job opportunities for Chinese students. Learning Chinese will help me in my career, further fuelling my motivation to continue my studies.

Although English is not as old as Chinese, it is spoken by many people around the world every day.English speakers are always creating new words, and we are often able to know where most words come from.
Sometimes, however, no one may really know where a word comes from.Did you ever think about why hamburgers are called hamburgers, especially when they are not made with ham About a hundred years ago, some men went to America from Europe. They came from a big city in Germany called Hamburg. They did not speak good English, but they ate good food. When some Americans saw them eating round pieces of beef, they asked the Germans what it was.The Germans did not understand the question and answered,“We come from Hamburg.” One of these Americans owned a restaurant, and had an idea.He cooked some round pieces of beef like those which the men from Hamburg ate. Then he put each between two pieces of bread and started selling them.Such bread came to be called “hamburgers”.Today “hamburgers” are sold in many countries around the world.

If you want to become a fluent English speaker you should take some advice. There are four skills in learning English. They are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills you should first master the skills of reading and listening.
Read as much as you can.But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of sentences, the meaning of unfamiliar words, etc. There is no need for you to pay much attention to grammar or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come across, but the fact that you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them, for example in other passages or books, is enough. It would be better to prepare a notebook for yourself so you can write down the important words or sentences in it.
As for listening, there are two choices besides reading. You can listen every day for about 30 minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skilful at your reading, and then you can catch up on your listening.Since you have lots of inputs in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice listening.
For listening, you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children.Their languages are easy.Or if you are good at listening, you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every day.Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes.
If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve automatically, and you can be sure that with a little effort they will become perfect.
