The English language has a lot of words which can be used in many different ways and in many different expressions.
One such example is the word “matter”. In fact,“matter” can mean just about anything. It could be one of the most useful words in the English language.
Let's get to the heart of the “matter” — a matter of principle.
If someone says that you owe (欠) him $50, but you don't, a friend might say,“Well, you could pay him the $50.It's not that much money. Then you won't have to hear him say it anymore.”But if you do not owe him the money, do not pay him the money. It's a matter of principle.
There is another way to use the word “matter”.But be careful with your choice of words.
If you ask someone,“What's the matter?”, it shows you are worried about the other person. But saying,“What's the matter with you?” has a completely different meaning. And it usually sounds rude.In fact, when you say,“What's the matter with you?”, you are suggesting that the person did something wrong or stupid.
Another expression that could sound rude is to say,“It doesn't matter to me.” Here, it depends on the context, and how you say it.
Let's say you tell someone that a friend just got a big raise at work. That person answers with,“It doesn't matter to me.” Here, it means he or she does not care. And it sounds rude.
But saying,“Oh, you pick where we eat dinner. It doesn't matter to me.” does not sound rude.In this situation,“It doesn't matter.” shows you are easy-going.
No matter how you look at it and what you say,“matter” is a very useful word. And it's only a matter of time before you will become an expert on the use of “matter”.

Any foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones required to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other instruments can report similar challenges.
Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese. Writing in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience, researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch (音高).
One of the study's authors, Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music “actually tunes our sensory system”. This means that schools that want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programmes, Dr Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems.
Mandarin (普通话) speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding (编码) of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do. This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role. A single-syllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned.
For this study, the researchers looked at 20 non-Chinese speaking volunteers, half with no musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years.
As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape of the Mandarin word “mi” in three of its meanings: squint, bewilder and rice. The researchers recorded activities in their brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a musical background showed much more brain activities in response to the Chinese sounds.
The lead author of the study, Patrick C.M. Wong, said it might work both ways. It appears that native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments.
语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。研究人员发现,受过音乐训练的人学习某些语言会更容易。
8.When learning Chinese, a foreigner will find ________.
A.he has a difficult time learning music at the same time

B.Because skills to learn the two make use of the same parts of the brain.
C.Because music training might help people with language study.
D.Because people who do well in Chinese studying do well in music.
解析:选B 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch (音高)”可知,学中文和音乐训练有关是因为两者用到的是大脑相同的部位。这些部位有助于帮助人们发现音高的变化。故选B。
10.The underlined word “intoned” in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by the word “________”.
A.created B.spelled
C.seemed D.pronounced
解析:选D 词义猜测题。根据第四段中的“This is because ... have several meanings depending on how it is intoned.”可知,在普通话和其他亚洲语言中,音高起着中心作用。对一个单音节词而言,当人们发出不同的音调时,这个词就表达出不同的意思。在第六段中以“mi”为例,这个词不同的音调就代表着不同的意思。故画线单词表达的应是人们对一个单音节词的“发音”。故选D项。
11.What would be the best title for this passage
A.Mandarin speakers are smarter than English speakers
B.The skilled ear for music may help language study
C.Pitch plays a central role in Chinese learning
D.Schools need to develop music programmes
解析:选B 标题归纳题。通读全文可知,研究表明,经过音乐训练的人,在学汉语方面会更加容易。音乐训练和汉语学习均用到了大脑相同的部位。该部位可以帮助人们更好地发现音高的变化,有助于人们学习某些语言。故选B项。

Your child is unique, but what all children have in common is natural curiosity and an ability to learn they are born with. Our brains are active all the time, and a baby's brain is the busiest of all. Research has shown that babies begin to understand language about twice as fast as they actually speak it. By showing children other languages at an early age, you are giving them the opportunity to make use of their natural ability to hear and recognize between the sounds of other languages, and their ability to make sense of what they are hearing.
Communication is something that children do to help them achieve something else, and they are unaware of the large amount of learning taking place. They take everything in through their senses, making connections between what they hear, see, smell, taste and touch. As long as we provide the right conditions, their learning and development will take place in a natural way.
In your child's early years, the emotional environment is just as important as the physical environment. Children learn when they feel safe, happy, valued and listened to. This is central to any learning experience in a child's early years, including learning an additional language. Your child has a trial-and-error approach to its development, and making mistakes is a valuable part of the learning process. When children learn an additional language at an early age, they get the benefits of experimenting with that language as a natural part of their development. Their progress isn't prevented by a fear of getting it wrong, and very young children are simply working their way towards getting it right.
The long-term benefits of learning another language go beyond being able to communicate with others. Studies suggest that children learning an additional language tend to score better on standardized tests because learning languages develops listening, observation, problem-solving and critical (批判性的) thinking skills. These are skills that are of life-long benefit, both personally and professionally. Encouraging in children a love of language at an early age prepares them well for school and for life.

How to Keep Building Your Vocabulary
No educative process is ever the end. It is always the beginning of more education and more learning. __16__ The following are the ways that can help to keep your vocabulary growing and growing.
Read more.As an adult, you will find most of the sources of your supply of new words in books and magazines. If your aim is to have a superior vocabulary, you will have to make the time to read at least one book and several magazines every week. Not just this week and next weak — but every week. __17__
Guess the meaning of a new word in the context. When you meet with an unfamiliar word, do not skip over it impatiently. __18__ Then work out its possible meaning in the context of the sentence. Whether you come to the right conclusion or not will make a difference because you are, in this process, becoming more clearly aware of the word. As a result, you will suddenly notice that this very word pops up unexpectedly again and again in all your reading. And of course after you've seen it a few times, you will know fairly well not only what it means but the many ways it can be used.
__19__ Think of the areas that may possibly be unknown to you — psychology, science, art, music or whatever. Then explore them by reading books in the fields. In every field, there are books written for average, untrained readers that will give you both a good knowledge and at the same time add dramatically to your vocabulary.
Set yourself a goal. If you do nothing about your vocabulary, you will learn, at most, twenty-five to fifty words in a year. __20__ This may sound ambitious — but you will discover vocabulary snowballs as soon as you start actively looking for new words.
A.Get prepared in advance.
B.Open your mind to new fields.
C.You must be willing to learn new words.
D.And that is the same case with vocabulary building.
E.I have never seen a single person with a rich vocabulary who is not a bookworm.

参考范文:
Hello, everyone. I'd like to say something about the good points about language learning.
As is known to all, the power of language can be equal to a gun. When you say something bad to someone else, you're setting up a poor relationship with him.
On the contrary, if you inspire others by inspiring words, it can strengthen your friendship. However, whether the words are anti-ear or not, there is no doubt that they succeed in making their way to express yourself at all times.
From my own point of view, realizing that we human beings are in need of positive support in spirit, I attach great importance to speaking inspiring words no matter when it is needed.
Thank you for your sharing.
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
School mornings were always busy. The first sentence I usually heard was “It's time to rise!”It was Mom's loudest voices, and there was no way I could pretend not to hear it or hide from it.
By then, I couldn't get to the kitchen fast enough. In fact, it was a race between my sister, my brother, and me.We usually seated ourselves at the same time, sometimes knocking each other out of our places. After breakfast, we all rushed out to the bus stop as we took our lunch bags that contained a sandwich, fruit, and dessert.
Then, one day, much to my surprise, there was no dessert in my lunch! What could have happened to it?Did Mom forget to make or buy it?Oh, well, I thought, “It's only one time, so it's no big deal.” But, for the next few days, my lunch contained no dessert! So one day, after school, as soon as I got home, I asked, “Mom! Why haven't you been putting a dessert in my school lunch?”
Mom answered,“Why Eugene, I have been including a dessert in your lunch. If you're not getting them, then who is?”
So then we thought of my activities, and what I did with my lunch each day. As soon as I arrived at shool, I always put my lunch in the classroom closet (储物间) along with all of the other lunches. And that brought us to Carl — the bad boy of the third-grade classroom. The teacher didn't like him in class and would send him to the closet, where he would spend most of each day.
Carl lived in a group foster home (集体寄养之家).He was loud and somewhat of a thief. He would take just about anything that wasn't fastened down (盖紧), so he wasn't welcome at school.Mom and I decided that with nothing else to do Carl was probably going through the lunches and eating what he liked.

Another expression that could sound rude is to say,“It doesn't matter to me.” Here, it depends on the ______,and how you say it.

A single-syllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is ______.
8.When learning Chinese, a foreigner will find ________.
A.he has a difficult time learning music at the same time
B.he has an easier time learning music at the same time
C.it is hard to master the tones required to speak and understand
D.it is easy to use the brain to help him discover changes in pitch
9.Why does Chinese learning have something to do with music training
A.Because there is the same difficulty in learning Chinese and music.
B.Because skills to learn the two make use of the same parts of the brain.
C.Because music training might help people with language study.
D.Because people who do well in Chinese studying do well in music.
10.The underlined word “intoned” in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by the word “________”.
A.created B.spelled
C.seemed D.pronounced
11.What would be the best title for this passage
A.Mandarin speakers are smarter than English speakers
B.The skilled ear for music may help language study
C.Pitch plays a central role in Chinese learning
D.Schools need to develop music programmes

12.What do we know about Children according to Paragraph 1
A.Children are busy playing.
B.Children are born to speak.
C.Children are good at speaking native language.
D.Children have a better ability to learn other languages.
13.While learning a language, children ______.
A.speak to themselves
B.need to have language classes
C.make use of their different senses
D.notice how much they have learned
14.Children learn when they ______.
A.are in bad emotion
B.do not make mistakes
C.learn from their mistakes
D.are taught by their teachers
15.In fact learning another language helps children to ________.
A.take more tests
B.have a good time
C.encourage themselves
D.develop life-long skills
