At just 40 years old, hip hop star Kasseem Dean, more popularly known as Swizz Beatz, has amassed (积累) a track record, lifestyle and nearly D|S70 million net worth that would inspire most of us to retire early. So why does Dean continue to both work extremely hard and also try projects that come with the risk of rejection
During our interview for Uncommon Drive, a video series for USA & Main that seeks to find out the motivations and magic of world class business people, Dean provided a memorable answer:“You only have so much time — once it's gone you don't get it back. Don't focus on money; focus on building something greater than yourself. If you're not making history, you're wasting your time on Earth.”
When you look at his answer, you will learn two important lessons. The first is in “making history”. Doing so requires awareness. You must fully understand what has and has not been achieved in the market you've entered. Dean makes every effort with the goal of creating something important that has not been done before and will be remembered for its impact beyond his years.
The second part of his statement is just as powerful. In this interview, he never once said he is “trying” to make history. Instead, he has told himself that no matter what difficulty there is, it's just going to happen. “I'm going to make history,” Dean said.
After talking to Dean for nearly 45 minutes, it was clear to me that he has removed all ego (自我) from a statement that might otherwise be misread as false pride. I believe it's a brilliant hack — rather than focus on all the reasons why a project can't be realized, he has convinced himself of the possibility.

5.What motivates Dean to continue to work hard in spite of success
A.His desire to be famous.
B.His adventurous spirit and determination.
C.His life goal to leave his mark on history.
D.His wish to get more wealth to help others.
根据第二段中的“If you're not making history, you're wasting your time on Earth.”
6.What is Dean's suggestion in the second part of his statement
A.Avoiding the difficulty.
B.Believing in yourself.
C.Doing something new.
D.Making yourself powerful.
根据第四段中的“Instead, he has told himself that no matter what difficulty there is”和最后一段中的“he has convinced himself of the possibility”可知,Dean强调的第二点就是“相信自己”。故选B项。

B.Why doesn't Kasseem Dean want to retire
C.How does Kasseem Dean make history

A couple of years ago, music psychologist Elizabeth Margulis decided to make some changes to the music of Luciano Berio. Berio was one of the most famous classical composers of the 20th century. After loading his most famous piece into a computer editing program, she just randomly started cutting.
The idea behind this act was simple: Margulis wanted to see if she could make people like Berio's music more by making it more repetitive.
Margulis knew that 90 percent of the music we listen to is music we've heard before. We return again and again to our favorite songs, listening over and over to the same musical riffs (重复乐段), which themselves repeat over and over inside the music, and she'd become obsessed with understanding why repetition is so compelling (引人入胜的). This is why she was razoring (剃) the music of Berio — because his music isn't at all repetitive.
We are drawn to repetition. It surrounds us, not just in modern American pop music, Margulis says, but everywhere. “Musical repetitiveness isn't really an individual feature of music that's arisen over the past few hundred years in the West,” she says. “It seems to be a cultural universal. Not only does every known human culture make music, but also, every known human culture makes music in which repetition is a defining (典型的) element.”
Why One part of the answer is what's known as the mere exposure effect.
Psychologists have found that people tend to start off wary (谨慎的) of — or even unfriendly to — new things, which makes sense from an evolutionary perspective. But then the act of mere exposure changes our feelings. We typically feel more warmly toward things we encounter again and again.
So mere exposure is one of the reasons we respond so well to repetition — both of music and in music — but Margulis clearly doesn't think it's the whole story. She says repetition also allows us to shift (转移) our attention around, from the surface aspects of the music to other aspects. So basically, part of what the repetition in music allows us to do is leave ourselves. In some small way, it allows us to shift and adjust our reality. And reality can often use some adjusting.
8.Why did Margulis change Berio's music
A.To find the role of repetition.
B.To show her talent in music.
C.To make his music more famous.
D.To test a computer editing program.
根据第二段中的“if she could make people like Berio's music more by making it more repetitive”和第三段中的“she'd become obsessed with understanding why repetition is so compelling (引人入胜的)”可知,她这样做的原因就是想了解音乐重复的作用。
9.If we hear new music again and again, we ________.
A.can't deal with its sound better
B.tend to be cautious of it very much
C.may expect something from it consciously
D.won't know when we have heard it
根据倒数第二段中的“But then the ... again and again.”
10.From the last paragraph, we can infer the repetition makes us ________.
A.experience the content of the songs
B.respond to the whole music better
C.remember the words of songs clearly
D.shift our experience of reality around us
根据最后一段中的“She says repetition ...adjust our reality.”
11.What might be the most suitable title for the passage
A.To play music again and again
B.To be exposed to music fully
C.To enjoy the beauty of music
D.To find the secret to musical effects

SILVER SPRING, MARYLAND — Students' involvement (参与) is a goal in schools everywhere. A teacher in the Washington suburbs has found a way to engage and motivate students — by bringing rhythm and fun to mathematics. The approach works well especially for students who speak English as a second language.
Making math fun
The voice heard in the video belongs to mathematics teacher Jake Scott. Most of the performers are his students. “I use rap because it is something that appeals to students, and also because music aids memory,” explains Scott.
Scott started using rap videos three years ago. So far he has produced nine, including YouTube favorites Triangle Experts and Quadratic Formulatic, which have been viewed tens of thousands of times. “It is fun and the whole process is something that students appreciate,” says Scott.
More than a teacher
Blair High School principal Renay Johnson is a big supporter. She even appears in Scott's latest video, Undefined Expressions.
“Mr Scott is very motivating and engaging for students,” notes Johnson. “He enjoys what he does. As you know, he engages students and mathematics through music. But he is also our wrestling coach. He also sponsors the National Honor Society. And he is also a director of after school sports academy. I am lucky to have him here as a teacher.”
Scott was recognized as an outstanding educator last year by the Montgomery County Council. He was also honored the year by an African American civil rights organization.
Jake Scott says he wants mathematics to be something that students look forward to learning. And he says the results will help them on a path to colleges and careers.

D.It is popular with students and helps memory.
13.Who is Scott's teaching approach especially for

D.Students who major in science and technology.

How do actors and actresses memorize hundreds of lines Memorizing lines takes practice and constant repetition. However, there are a few ways to make the memorization process run smoothly and quickly.
__16__
For most performers, there is no quicker way of memorizing lines. To learn lines, an actor must recite the play loud over and over again. Most rehearsals (排练) encourage this by running through the lines or having a “read through”. By the time the opening night arrives, most actors have spoken their lines hundreds of times.
Listen to your cast members
Sometimes inexperienced actors spend rehearsals looking at fellow performers, waiting patiently to say their next line. __17__ This will help the actors learn their lines better because the context of the dialogue is absorbing.
__18__
Because there is often not enough rehearsal time, many performers find ways to listen to the play's dialogue during everyday activities. They use a tape recorder or an MP3 player to listen to the lines from each relevant scene. Some actors prefer to record the lines of all the characters, including their own lines. __19__ Others like recording the lines of fellow cast members, and they leave a blank space so that they can insert their dialogue while listening to the recording.
Think positively and don't panic
Most actors will experience stage fright before the opening night. Actors forget lines now and then. When it happens, however, most of the time the audience never notice. If you forget a line in the middle of your performance, don't freeze. Stay in character. Keep the scene going to the best of your ability. If unfortunately you forget a line once, you will probably never forget that line ever again. __20__
A.Record your lines
B.Practice makes perfect
C.Read lines loud and repeat them
D.Remember the lines in a short time
E.Sometimes embarrassment is the toughest method of memorization.
F.Then, they not only listen carefully, but they also speak all of the lines.
G.Instead, they should be listening carefully, responding in character at all times.
16.选C 根据下文中的“For most performers, there is no quicker way of memorizing lines. To learn lines, an actor must recite the play loud over and over again.(对于大多数演员来说,没有更快速地记忆台词的方法。要学会台词,一个演员必须反复地大声背诵这个剧目。)”可知,C项“大声朗诵台词并且重复台词”符合语境。因此选C。
17.选G 根据上文中的“Sometimes inexperienced actors spend rehearsals looking at fellow performers, waiting patiently to say their next line. (有时缺乏经验的演员们用排练的时间看着其他的演员们,耐心地等待着去说他们的下一句台词。)”和空后的内容可知,此处应是缺乏经验的演员们的正确的做法。
18.选A 根据下文中的“record the lines of all the characters”和“recording the lines of fellow cast members”可知,A项“录下你的台词”适合作本段的小标题。
19.选F 根据空前内容“Some actors prefer to record the lines of all the characters, including their own lines.(一些演员更喜欢录下所有角色的台词,包括他们自己的。)”
20.选E 根据上文中的“If unfortunately you forget a line once, you will probably never forget that line ever again.”

I love to play the piano and I greatly enjoy performing my music, so when the annual winter recital (独奏会) was canceled, I was disappointed. I had looked forward to it for a long time and had already prepared two of my best songs. My mom had a wonderful idea, however, to turn this disappointing letdown into something worthwhile. “You and your sister should perform your songs at Carriage House Senior Living (养老院),” my mom suggested brightly. “I'm sure the seniors there would really appreciate the music and you could each play more than just two songs.”
I immediately thought this was a great idea. One of the things I did not like about the recitals was that I was limited to playing just a couple of songs. Playing the piano at Carriage House seemed like a win win situation because not only would I get to play more songs, but I would also have the chance to cheer up the residents at the home with some lively tunes.
My mom called Carriage House and made arrangements for my sister and me to perform. We were told we could play the piano during the Sunday diner hour in two weeks. In the coming days, I worked especially hard to polish up fifteen pieces that I thought the crowd would enjoy, including many old classics. My sister and I decided that first I would play three songs and then she would, taking turns until the end of the hour.
When the much anticipated day finally arrived, my family and I drove to Carriage House. We were greeted by an old woman who introduced herself as Phyllis. Then we came to the dining room and Phyllis announced to the room, “These two girls have come to sing and want to introduce themselves!” As she handed the microphone to me there was scattered applause.
“Hi, my name is Baylie,” I said with a smile.
“Hi, I'm Chloe,” my sister said shyly.
“We have come here to entertain you with some piano songs. We hope you enjoy our performance,” I enthusiastically announced.

Paragraph 1:
When I sat down and turned to my first song, I felt a little bit nervous. Worse still, I pressed a key on the piano but was surprised to hear no sound. How could I perform the song without the piano I was on pins and needles when Phyllis slowly made her way the front of the crowd of dinners and announced in a comforting tone, “This girl has come to sing for us but the piano seems to be a little nervous.” Almost immediately, there was scattered applause and several people stepped forward to help me plug in the piano and set the microphone. With everything ready, I took a deep breath and commenced my performance.
Paragraph 2:
The moment our last music ended, the crowd burst into applause. I realized it was far better than a piano recital because almost everyone seemed to truly appreciate my music and I am proud that I have the power to spread kindness to them. It ended up being a blessing in disguise that the recital was canceled, leading to me sharing the gift of music with those who needed it most.UNIT

4.What is the function of the first paragraph
A.To lead to the main topic.
B.To describe a star's success.
C.To express admiration for a star.
D.To explain the meaning of success.
5.What motivates Dean to continue to work hard in spite of success
A.His desire to be famous.
B.His adventurous spirit and determination.
C.His life goal to leave his mark on history.
D.His wish to get more wealth to help others.
6.What is Dean's suggestion in the second part of his statement
A.Avoiding the difficulty.
B.Believing in yourself.
C.Doing something new.
D.Making yourself powerful.
7.What's the main idea of the text
A.How does Kasseem Dean deal with the rejection
B.Why doesn't Kasseem Dean want to retire
C.How does Kasseem Dean make history
D.What makes Kasseem Dean work hard

9.If we hear new music again and again, we ________.
A.can't deal with its sound better
B.tend to be cautious of it very much
C.may expect something from it consciously
D.won't know when we have heard it
10.From the last paragraph, we can infer the repetition makes us ________.
A.experience the content of the songs
B.respond to the whole music better
C.remember the words of songs clearly
D.shift our experience of reality around us
11.What might be the most suitable title for the passage

12.Why does Scott use rap to make math fun
A.It is closely connected with math.
B.It is a kind of music with good beats.
C.It is a kind of music with good rhythm.
D.It is popular with students and helps memory.
13.Who is Scott's teaching approach especially for
A.Students who are poor in math.
B.Students who are fond of music and math.
C.Students who speak English as a second language.
D.Students who major in science and technology.
14.What can we conclude from the passage
A.Johnson doesn't approve of Scott's work.
B.Scott's work is recognized by the public.
C.Watching videos is a daily routine in math classes.
D.Scott makes students sing and dance in math class.
15.What is the main idea of the passage
A.A teacher uses music to make math fun and cool.
B.An introduction of a new teaching method to readers.
C.Mr Scott is a successful math teacher.
D.Students' involvement is a goal in teaching.

How do actors and actresses memorize hundreds of lines Memorizing lines takes practice and constant repetition. However, there are a few ways to make the memorization process run smoothly and quickly.
__________
For most performers, there is no quicker way of memorizing lines. To learn lines, an actor must recite the play loud over and over again. Most rehearsals (排练) encourage this by running through the lines or having a “read through”. By the time the opening night arrives, most actors have spoken their lines hundreds of times.
Listen to your cast members
Sometimes inexperienced actors spend rehearsals looking at fellow performers, waiting patiently to say their next line. __________ This will help the actors learn their lines better because the context of the dialogue is absorbing.
__________
Because there is often not enough rehearsal time, many performers find ways to listen to the play's dialogue during everyday activities. They use a tape recorder or an MP3 player to listen to the lines from each relevant scene. Some actors prefer to record the lines of all the characters, including their own lines. __________ Others like recording the lines of fellow cast members, and they leave a blank space so that they can insert their dialogue while listening to the recording.
A.Record your lines
B.Practice makes perfect
C.Read lines loud and repeat them
D.Remember the lines in a short time
E.Sometimes embarrassment is the toughest method of memorization.
F.Then, they not only listen carefully, but they also speak all of the lines.
G.Instead, they should be listening carefully, responding in character at all times.
