It may seem as if Mother's Day was invented by a company named Hallmark, but people have been taking time on the calendar to give a shout-out to Mom for a long time. The Greeks and Romans had mother goddess festivals — although their celebrations didn't involve the menfolk taking their underappreciated mothers out to dinner. A more recent tradition was Mothering Sunday, which developed in the British Isles during the 16th century. On the fourth Sunday in April, young men and women who were living and working apart from their families were advised to return to their mothers' houses.
Mother's Day as it is observed in the United States started in the 1850s with Ann Jarvis, a West Virginia woman who held “Mothers' Work Days” to promote health and hygiene (卫生) at home and in the workplace. During the Civil War, Jarvis organized women to improve sanitary conditions for soldiers on both sides, and after the war she became a peacemaker, furthering the cause by bringing together mothers of Union and Confederate soldiers and promoting a Mother's Day holiday.
Jarvis's work inspired another 19th-century woman, Julia Ward Howe. In 1870 Howe published her “Mother's Day Proclamation”, which envisioned (设想) the day not as appreciation of mothers by their children but as an opportunity for women to exercise their collective power for peace. Howe started holding annual Mother's Day celebrations in Boston, her hometown, but after about a decade she stopped footing the bill and the tradition faded away.
It was Jarvis's daughter Anna who succeeded in getting Mother's Day recognized as a national holiday. After her mother died, in May 1905, Anna started holding yearly ceremony on the anniversary and conducting a tireless PR campaign to have the day made a holiday. In 1908 she succeeded in enlisting the support of John Wanamaker, the Philadelphia department store magnate and advertising pioneer, and by 1912 West Virginia and a few other states had adopted Mother's Day. Two years later, President Woodrow Wilson signed a resolution declaring the second Sunday in May a national holiday.
It wasn't long, though, before whatever ideals the day was supposed to celebrate were buried under an amount of greeting cards and candy. By the 1920s Anna Jarvis was campaigning against the holiday she had been instrumental in creating. “I wanted it to be a day of emotionalism, not profit,” she said.

Christmas Traditions
Since about 400 AD, Christmas day has been celebrated on 25th December. This date was the old mid-winter festival in pre-Christian times, around the time of the longest night and the shortest day. Christmas in the 21st century has many traditions.
Shops can make about 60 percent of their year's income in the three months before Christmas. So most shops get ready for it in October. The shopping centres are beautifully decorated and stay open late at night. The first time this happened was in 1867 when Macys', a famous shop in New York, stayed open until midnight on Christmas Eve (24th December).
By mid-December, almost every house, shop and street has a Christmas tree. This tradition was started by the Germans as early as 700 AD. In the northern countries of the world, winter is cold and dark and most trees lose their leaves. The beautiful green trees decorated with lights and coloured glass balls give people hope that spring will come again.
Father Christmas is known across the world with his white hair, red coat and big bag of toys. Young children are told that he lives in the north of Finland and makes toys for them. By tradition, he brings the toys to children at midnight, on the night before Christmas.
On Christmas day a traditional meal is eaten, usually turkey and a rich, spicy cake. Some people hate Christmas. Others feel it is a magical and exciting time. They love seeing family and friends; they also love the traditions. Love it or hate it, Christmas is a time to look back over the old year and forward to the new one.

The Torch Festival (火把节) is a traditional festival which is celebrated among some ethnic groups in southwestern China, such as the Yi, Bai, Hani, Lisu, and Lahu, etc. It usually falls on the 24th or 25th of June, with three days of celebrations. The festival came from worship (崇拜) of fire by ancestors (祖先). For some ethnic groups, it's a tradition in the festival for elders to share farming experience with young people and educate them about taking care of crops.
During the festival, big torches are made to stand in all villages, with small torches placed in front of the door of each house. When night falls, the torches are lit and the villages are bright. At the same time, people walk around the fields and houses, holding small torches and placing the torches in the field corners. Inside the villages, young people are singing and dancing around the big torches that keep burning throughout the night. Other activities like horse races are also held during the festival.
In a horse race of the Yi people in Yunnan, torches are used to form hurdles for riders to get through. The Hani people in Yunnan traditionally tie fruits to torches with strings. When the strings are broken after the torches are lit, people struggle for the fruits for good luck.
For the Lisu people in Sichuan, the festival is an occasion for holding torch parades. Big torches are carried by teams of people, which is like a fire dragon. If different teams meet, it's a tradition to exchange the big torches with one another.

The Wilsons were having dinner. The food was left from their Thanksgiving dinner two days before: turkey soup and turkey meat mixed with potatoes. Eleven-year-old Angelina asked, “Are we having turkey ice cream, too?” Her father replied, “Angelina, have you forgotten that I had no job for a whole year Now I have work again. You should be very thankful.” “I'm sorry I said that about the turkey! But unless I get a new dress, I will not look good for the Christmas Festival.” Angelina murmured.
The Festival was the winter holiday celebration of a group she belonged to: the Avalon Girls' Service Club. They wrote cheerful cards for hospital patients. They cooked meals for the homeless. But the Christmas Festival was different. The girls wore party clothes and many people came to see them perform. Angelina had only a plain gray dress that she had worn to the event last year. And now it was a little too short. Angelina appealed to her parents to buy one for her, a beautiful red dress in Forbes' Store. Her mother sighed, “Well, we cannot buy it. We have to be careful. You never know when I might lose my job.”
All hope was not gone. There was a sign in the Forbes Store window that said “layaway (分期付款)” . Angelina pulled ten worn dollar bills from her coat pocket. She ran to the store and begged the salesperson, Mrs Harding, to hold “her” dress for her. “OK. But you must come back in two weeks to pay the rest.” Angelina felt like jumping into the air. She was so happy that she told Mrs Harding about the Avalon Service Club's work and its Christmas party.
Then, Angelina shook and suffered in the cold wind looking for work. Finally, Angelina got a job making new clothing for dolls. Angelina was excellent at sewing. Paragraph 1:
Suddenly, Mrs Harding said she would pay the rest of the money so Angelina could have it. “Your club always does good work. I would like you to have this dress for your Festival.” Angelina thought how much she wanted the red dress. But she remembered how sad her father had felt during that long year when he had no work. She chose her words carefully, “That is very good of you, Mrs Harding. But you will need all your money until you get another job.” Angelina expressed thanks and closed her hand around the worn dollar bills Mrs Harding returned to her. With that, she said goodbye and ran out of the store into the cold street.
Paragraph 2:
Outside, Angelina saw a man who looked like Santa Claus was asking people for money to help poor people. Angelina stood still for a moment on the snowy sidewalk. Then, quite suddenly, she gave the man dressed as Santa Claus several dollars. “Mrs Harding is not the only one who wants to help other people.” Just as suddenly she decided that maybe she would buy some material to add length to her old gray wool dress. And she started to plan how she would sew bright red ribbons along the neckline. Who knew, maybe she could look good at the Festival after all. But, in any event, she would have fun. After all, it was Christmas time.UNIT 1 单元验收评价(二)——仿真高考检测

Sure enough, the dolls' dresses turned out beautiful. She got twenty dollars. Still, she was far from having enough money for her dress. She felt helpless as the final payment date arrived.
