The Centre's home is a restored 18th century townhouse in the north of Dublin, the city of Joyce's birth and the setting for all his works. From this central place in Joyce's heartland, the Centre aims to develop an appreciation of this most remarkable and significant literary figure of the 20th century.
No.35 North Great George's Street was built in 1784 and decorated with fine plasterwork (灰泥) by Michael Stapleton. The house was restored in the 1980s and opened as the James Joyce Centre in 1996, run by members of Joyce's sister's family.
The Kenmare Room is used for lectures and has a small show of reproductions of Joyce family pictures. The world is colorful with different languages, skin colors, and different cultures. It's important to develop an appreciation for different cultures in order to become a well-rounded person. One way to develop this appreciation is to try to learn about other cultures.
There are several ways to become knowledgeable about different cultures. One way is to read books written by authors from a particular culture. This allows people to gain a real look into the culture.
For example, when a teacher wishes to expose his students to a different culture, he will often read them stories based on the culture. To learn about various tribes of Native Americans, he may read students books like The Rough Face Girl by Rafe Martin or The Windigo's Return: A North Woods Story by Douglas Wood and Greg Couch. He may invite Native American storytellers to visit the classroom so students can listen to authentic tales from that culture.
Another way to learn about different cultures is to try to learn a foreign language. Many language-learning books and audio programs are available. A person can choose a language he has always wanted to learn and locate learning programs to help him master the language.
If he feels especially ambitious (有抱负的), he can attend a foreign language class. Making contact with native speakers of the language allows him to gain first-hand knowledge of a particular culture as he struggles to learn the language.
A person can learn about different cultures if he tastes authentic food from a specific culture. Becoming familiar with a culture's authentic food is a giant step in the right direction. Food allows people to gain insight into a special way of life.
Signing up for a pen pal deserves a try. The Internet has made it possible for people to correspond with others from different countries just by logging on to the web. Corresponding with people from other countries through e-mail or snail mail is another useful way to become familiar with different cultures.

Runners in a relay race pass a stick in one direction. However, merchants passed silk, gold, fruit, and glass along the Silk Road in more than one direction. They earned their living by traveling the famous Silk Road.
The Silk Road was not a simple trading network. It passed through thousands of cities and towns. It started from eastern China, across Central Asia and the Middle East, and ended in the Mediterranean Sea.It was used from about 200 BC to about 1300 AD, when sea travel offered new routes. It was sometimes called the world's longest highway. However, the Silk Road was made up of many routes, not one smooth path. They passed through what are now 18 countries. The routes crossed mountains and deserts and had many dangers of hot sun, deep snow and even battles.Only experienced traders could return safe.
The Silk Road got its name from its most prized product.Silk could be used like money to pay taxes or buy goods. But the traders carried more than just silk.Gold, silver, and glass from Europe were much found in the Middle East and Asia.Horses traded from other areas changed farming practices in China.
Indian merchants traded salt and other valuable goods.Chinese merchants traded paper, which produced an immediate effect on the West.Apples traveled from central Asia to Rome. The Chinese had learned to graft different trees together to make new kinds of fruit. They passed this science on to others, including the Romans. The Romans used grafting to grow the apple.Trading along the Silk Road led to worldwide business 2,000 years before the World Wide Web.The people along the Silk Road did not share just goods. They also shared their beliefs. The Silk Road provided pathways for learning, diplomacy, and religion.

The way to a man's heart is through his stomach. This is what China offered me the moment my feet touched its ground. As someone who loves food, I couldn't help but worry about eating foreign food to my tongue. I love my country's foods and I have a bias when it comes to dishes. Being far away from home for the first time, finding good food was my priority.
Obviously, the beginning of every journey is rough. My experience at Chinese restaurants left_a_lot_to_be_desired. I had yet to explore Nanjing, and I would often eat at cafeterias around my university. My first date with Chinese food was not a good experience. I thought it did not suit my taste.
However, one day, my Chinese classmates took me to a Chinese restaurant near our university. It looked like a place for occasions or family gatherings of some sort. My classmates then called the waiter for our orders.
One dish after another until the table was full. It was my first time to witness such a meal, with more than 10 dishes on the table. It was not a buffet sort of thing, but certainly it was perfect for eating in groups. As I am a slow eater. I was quite hesitant to try all the dishes. Also, knowing from my past experience of Chinese food, I thought that I should only pick what I could eat. Eventually, one of my classmates sitting next to me convinced me to give each of the dishes a try. I tasted them one by one. It was like my whole concept of Chinese food changed after that. Each dish appealed to my palate, and I forgot to slow down.
We cannot deny that food is one main source of our happiness and it is indeed our thirst for survival. China won my heart when it got through my stomach.

I first played ping-pong in our basement (地下室) at home. My brother and I asked for an old wooden table from my grandfather. It was painted green. Although it was very simple, it served its purpose every day. My father never really played any other sports with me, but ping-pong was one that he played quite well and it took me plenty of time before I could beat him. My elder brother was also a very good competitor.
When I got to university, I was happy to discover a ping-pong table in the common room. I spent a great deal of time there, often until the midnight. There were about three or four friends that I often played against. We were all at the same skill level. One of them had ever played in a tournament (锦标赛). A friend from Germany said his father had ever won the German national tournament. We took part in a tournament. My ranking (名次) is the third place, but I had beaten the first and second place winners when we had played for fun. I sometimes played with other friends who didn't play ping-pong well, so I would use my left hand to give them an advantage. But before long I became so skilled with my left hand that they no longer had the advantage.
Later, I played in a ping-pong competition which was held by my university. I lost at first. But because it was double climination (双淘汰制), I went to the loser group. I beat all the players and then played against the student who had beaten me in the first round. Surprisingly, I beat him 3 times and won the competition.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Paragraph 1:
Later, there was a tournament held in the city where I studied.
Paragraph 2:
After the tournament I didn't often play the sport because of the busy study.
参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
Later, there was a tournament held in the city where I studied. It was a tournament for university students. Players came from all the northern universities. I felt very proud because I took part in it for my university. I believed that I could play pretty well. I expected to get a good ranking in the tournament. I felt very nervous, because I played against a student who had won many times. I played very hard and tried my best. Although I lost the tournament, it was a good practice.
Paragraph 2:
After the tournament I didn't often play the sport because of the busy study. But I played ping-pong with my friends when I was free. I thought it was a great deal of fun to play ping-pong with friends. It was also a good way to make our friendship closer and keep us healthier. We sometimes took part in a competition together, but we didn't care about winning or not. We all knew that a win was not everything. We just enjoyed playing together and had a wonderful time.UNIT 3 单元验收评价(二)——仿真高考检测

A.was unsatisfactory
B.was extraordinary
C.was full of surprises
D.was what I had longed for
13.Which is NOT the reason why the writer was hesitant to try all the dishes
A.He has a bias against foods.
B.He is a slow eater.
C.He attaches little importance to foods.
D.He thought Chinese food was not that good.
14.The writer's concept of Chinese food didn't change until ________.
A.he gave each dish a try
B.he saw the dishes on the table
C.he entered the Chinese restaurant
D.he picked what dish he could eat
15.What may be the best title for the passage
A.A feast for the stomach
B.In search of good food
C.My first date with Chinese food
D.Chinese food:My first impression that didn't last

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Paragraph 1:
Later, there was a tournament held in the city where I studied.
Paragraph 2:
After the tournament I didn't often play the sport because of the busy study.
