Cory Lee, aged 30, was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (脊髓性肌萎缩症) at a very young age.Because of his condition, he began using a wheelchair at age 4.His mother, Sandy Gilbreath, raised him as a single parent.Although taking care of a child with a disability was challenging, she ensured that Cory didn't miss out on the fun things in life.Sandy took him on road trips during summer breaks throughout his childhood. The exciting experiences of exploring new places inspired him to set a lifelong goal of visiting all seven continents.
Fortunately, Cory was able to do that just before the COVID-19 started. He and his mother traveled to Antarctica just before the borders closed. It was the seventh and final continent off his list.He became the first-ever wheelchair user to visit all seven continents!
According to Cory, traveling in a wheelchair requires extensive planning and research. He started his research six to twelve months before each trip, making sure that there were accessible transportation options in the location. He would also call up hotels or rental homes to confirm if they were truly as accessible as they claimed to be.
When Cory started going on adventures, there weren't many online resources discussing accessible travel. To help other travelers with disabilities explore the world as he did, he decided to share his knowledge in his blog.Aiming to promote representation of the wheelchair-using community, Cory and his mother wrote a children's book, titled Let's Explore with Cor Cor, which is about a boy who travels around the world in his powered wheelchair.

Have you ever imagined that your T-shirt can cool you down by up to 5℃ on these hot summer days Thanks to a recent discovery, the possibility is getting closer. While there are many technologies that manage to keep the body warm, this amazing invention aims to offer real comfort for those who want to feel cool and fresh on extremely hot days.
Its inventors, engineers Ma Yaoguang of Zhejiang University and Tao Guangming of Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China, took a completely new technique. They designed a special textile (纺织物) that can take in body heat and give off its energy into space. This means that, even when it looks like you are wearing a regular shirt, you are actually wearing something that works like a mirror.
Research at Stanford University in 2017 had already managed to cool the wearers by 3℃, but this experiment was limited. So researchers still need to do more experiments to see the new technique to decide how effectively the new material cools while the wearers are standing or walking, and not directly facing the sky, like in their experiments. They also need to examine how well it works when T-shirts are not in close touch with the skin.
Inventors Yaoguang and Guangming note that the new material will increase the costs by just 10 percent.“It means everybody can get a T-shirt and the cost is basically the same as their old one,” Yaoguang said.
So if you are an athlete or simply someone that has to deal with the extremely high temperatures, be patient because your days of feeling hot and bothered may be coming to an end!

B.To help beat the heat in hot weather.
C.To find out the wearers' temperature.
D.To protect clothes from becoming wet.

9.How does the special product work
A.By sending out absorbed heat.
B.By turning sunlight into energy.
C.By keeping heat out completely.
D.By using light colors to reflect sunlight.
解析:选A 细节理解题。根据第二段第二句可知,这种纺织物通过吸收热量并散发所吸收的热量来帮助人们降温。
10.What is the main idea of Paragraph 3
A.The invention needs further testing.
B.The studies in 2017 lack evidence.
C.The new textile has a good cooling effect.
D.The new textile applies to various situations.

Children who spend more time reading with their parents have a greater chance of becoming better readers than those who don't. With help from their parents, children can learn techniques to improve their reading skills.
“A lot of parents think after their child learns to read, they should stop reading to them,” Donna George said. “They are sadly mistaken.”
George offers her services to parents at the Title Ⅰ Learning Centers. She said reading aloud to children may be the most valuable thing parents can do. “It is better for children to hear things at a high level than where they are,” George said. “Parents are their child's first teacher.” Parents help their children build listening, phonics, comprehension and vocabulary skills when they read aloud to them.
Before parents can identify reading problems, they should escape the enemy — television and limit the time their children spend watching television. George suggested not allowing kids to have a TV in their bedrooms, setting a schedule of when kids can watch or keeping a list of how many programs children watch. Louise Jones said that while her 14-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son enjoy reading, the television sometimes becomes a distraction. So she tries to build the situation by suggesting books the entire family will enjoy reading together, like the Harry Potter series.
Parents who do not read themselves should not count on their children being enthusiastic about it. If parents would read to their children at least 15 minutes every day, children would not have so many problems in school. It is the parents' job to help build that desire in their children, and of course to know what kind of books to read is also important.
语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了经常与父母一起阅读的孩子更容易成为优秀的阅读者,并详细阐述了父母如何使孩子成为更好的阅读者。

13.The underlined word “distraction” in Paragraph 4 means “something that can ________”.
A.improve children's reading skills
B.help children form the right habit of reading
C.make children interested in reading
D.stop children concentrating on reading

14.What is important according to the fourth paragraph
A.Reading skills. B.Reading speed.
C.Reading materials. D.Reading environment.
解析:选D 推理判断题。第四段主要讲了为了避免电视成为孩子阅读的障碍,不建议在孩子的卧室安装电视,而且列举了Louise Jones的例子,为了避免电视使孩子分心,Louise Jones营造全家都读书的氛围。所以从本段可以知道阅读环境是很重要的。
15.What would be the best title for the passage

Here are a few examples of some things that parents can learn from children if they listen and make the most of their time together.
Technology: Whether it's programming the DVR, texting or how to adapt to the latest Facebook layout (设计) change, most parents will find their children are at least one step ahead of them. __16__Let your children show you a few things and find common ground that can lead to great discussions.
Trends: Many parents are shocked when they hear about new trends on the nightly news. From cyberbullying (网络欺凌) to teens abusing drugs, it's important for parents to know what's going on in the world their children live in. Develop an open and trusting relationship with your children. __17__
Patience: __18__ How parents deal with those mistakes will teach both the children and the parents many things. For parents, one of the important skills that can be learned is how to be patient. Work at it and it'll be worth it!
Forgiveness: When kids make mistakes — and they will — it's important that parents learn how to forgive and move on in a positive way. __19__ But your children will learn from your example and maybe become more patient with you!
Wonder: __20__ Let your children's natural curiosity inspire you to see the world differently. Children can help us pause to appreciate the wonders of our world. Go where they want to go.

8.What is the purpose of the new invention
A.To keep people warm.
10.What is the main idea of Paragraph 3
A.The invention needs further testing.
B.The studies in 2017 lack evidence.
C.The new textile has a good cooling effect.

12.According to George, reading aloud to children ______.
A.helps them correct mistakes
B.is helpful to their reading
C.is parents' first duty to their children
D.can get children out of television's attraction
13.The underlined word “distraction” in Paragraph 4 means “something that can ________”.
A.improve children's reading skills
B.help children form the right habit of reading
C.make children interested in reading
D.stop children concentrating on reading
14.What is important according to the fourth paragraph
A.Reading skills. B.Reading speed.
C.Reading materials. D.Reading environment.
15.What would be the best title for the passage
A.Children Spend More Time Reading with Parents
B.Parents Are Their Children's First Teacher
C.How Parents Make Their Children a Better Reader
D.How to Improve Children's Reading Ability
