Ⅰ.阅读理解
Many people turn to doctors or self help books, but they forget a great thing that could help them fight illness: their friends.
Researchers are only now starting to pay attention to the importance of friendship in health. A 10 year Australian study found that older people with a large circle of friends were 22 percent less likely to die during the study period than those with fewer friends. A large 2007 study showed an increase of nearly 60 percent in the danger for obesity among people whose friends gained weight. And last year, Harvard researchers reported that strong social ties (关系) could improve brain health as we age.
“In_general,_the_role_of_friendship_in_our_lives_isn't_well_realized,” said Rebecca, a professor at the University of North Carolina. “Friendship has a bigger effect on our psychological (心理的) health than family relationships.”
While many friendship studies are about the close relationships of women, some research shows that it can do good to men too. In a six year study of 736 middle aged men, having friendships reduces the risk of heart disease. Only smoking was as important a danger factor (因素) as having little social support.
The exact reason why friendship has such a big effect isn't clear. While friends can send a sick person to the hospital or pick up medicine, the advantages go well beyond physical help. Friendship clearly has a big psychological effect. “People with stronger friendships feel like there is someone they can turn to,” said Karen, a doctor. “The message of these studies is that friends make your life better.”

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don't give friendship back. That is why some friendships don't last very long. To have a friend, you must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous (宽宏大量的); be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you do not tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven't been honest, you may lose your friend's trust. Good friends always rely on one another to speak and act honestly.
Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You do not have to give your lunch money or your clothes. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them, you help your friend know better.
Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend's place so that you can understand the problem better.
No two friendships are exactly alike. But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friends, you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding.

Here's a simple question — answer it honestly, because your response could increase the amount of pleasure in your daily life and even help you live longer. How many hours did you spend reading last week
This question has arrived in thousands of American homes every year as part of the University of Michigan's Health and Retirement Study (HRS).Researchers at the Yale School of Public Health studied 12 years of HRS data about the reading habits and health of more than 3,600 men and women over the age of 50. They found people who read books for as few as 30 minutes a day were living an average of two years longer than people who didn't read anything at all. Surprisingly, book readers lived longer than their peers who read only newspapers or magazines.
You may already be familiar with recent findings that suggest children who read books with their parents several times a week score higher on intelligence tests. But recent research argues that reading may be just as important in adulthood.
Why does reading books strengthen our brain power but reading newspapers doesn't
For one, chapter books encourage “deep reading”. Unlike skimming a page of headlines, reading a book forces our brain to think seriously and make connections from one chapter to another, and to the outside world. Secondly, reading books, especially novels, can increase EQ(emotional intelligence), which can help us live longer and more healthily.
That's not to say that magazines, newspapers and online articles are without merit. Reading anything can fill our mind and expose us to new words, phrases and facts. This will carry mental benefits. New research finds that a large vocabulary may lead to a sharper mind.

6.According to the text, children reading books regularly can ________.
A.live longer B.stay healthy
C.become smarter D.make many friends
解析:选C 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“children who read books with their parents several times a week score higher on intelligence tests”可知,经常和父母一起读书的孩子在智力测验中得分更高,也就是说经常读书的孩子会更聪明。
7.Why can book readers live longer
A.They attain higher EQ.
B.They seldom think seriously.
C.They never make “deep reading”.
D.They usually stay in their own world.
解析:选A 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中的“Secondly, reading books, especially novels, can increase EQ (emotional intelligence), which can help us live longer and more healthily.”可知,读书能提高情商,这会使人更长寿、更健康。
8.What does the underlined word “merit” in the last paragraph mean
A.Disadvantage. B.Benefit.
C.Effort. D.Difficulty.

参考范文:
Hi, Joe! I have read about your situation. It is common for everyone to have arguments with friends. So take it easy, and find a way out. Here are my suggestions.
First, try to find out who did wrong and caused the arguments. If it is you, be brave enough to say sorry to your friend. And if not, you shouldn't be too hard on your friend either. Instead, try to take it easy and be kind. Second, give yourself and your friend some time to calm down, as it is not necessary to deal with the arguments immediately.
Good luck and best wishes for you!
Ⅲ.读后续写

Boys like to be considered to be brave, but what kind of things can be considered to be brave It is not a question that can be answered by words, but by the actual deed (行为).A boy with the name Henry gave us a good example.
Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school, they saw some people fighting in the street corner.Ronny said excitedly and curiously, “Some people are fighting! Let's go and have a look!” But Henry refused, “It's none of our business. We'd better go home and don't get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward (胆小鬼) and afraid to go,” said Ronny and off he ran to the spot (地点) with some other boys.Henry had to go home alone and didn't think about it anymore.
But Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn't want to play with him.
Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Ronny for his rude behaviour, because he had learned that true courage was shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved (值得), and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys' laughter and continued to stick to (坚持) his thought and go to school and study as well. However, Ronny didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore.Instead, he had his new friends who also thought Henry was a coward.Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.

Paragraph 2:
At that moment, Henry happened to pass by.He heard the screams and ran to the river as soon as possible.Seeing Ronny was almost drowned, Henry took off his clothes immediately and jumped into the water without any hesitation. He reached Ronny just as he was sinking the last time. With great effort, and with much danger to himself, he brought Ronny to the shore in time.Henry was happy to help his friend, though he was extremely tired.UNIT 3 课时跟踪检测(三) 阅读写作融会练

5.What is the author's purpose in writing the first paragraph
A.To tell readers what to read.
B.To show why people read less.
C.To carry out a survey among readers.
D.To tell readers how important reading is.
6.According to the text, children reading books regularly can ________.
A.live longer B.stay healthy
C.become smarter D.make many friends
7.Why can book readers live longer
A.They attain higher EQ.
B.They seldom think seriously.
C.They never make “deep reading”.
D.They usually stay in their own world.
8.What does the underlined word “merit” in the last paragraph mean
A.Disadvantage. B.Benefit.
C.Effort. D.Difficulty.

All through school, I had only one close friend. We spent years together, essentially joined at the hip.But then Greg moved away, and it would take more than 50 years to bring us together again.
As children, Greg and I dove into everything with passion. We raced our bikes and illustrated our own comic books. We even became attracted to the same blonde girl from around the corner, a sixth grader named Joanne who barely knew we existed.
The last time I saw Greg was sometime in 1966.I can't recall saying goodbye before he moved.
But then, a few summers ago, I saw a familiar woman.“Excuse me, would your name happen to be Joanne?”
“Uh, yes ...” She didn't recognize me until I explained who I was.We hadn't exchanged more than a few dozen words in our entire lifetime.“Have you stayed in touch with Greg?” she asked.I was surprised she even knew of our friendship.
“No, I haven't,” I admitted.“I wish I had.”
Back at the cabin I checked my messages.I glanced at one email, and then read it from start to finish. The email was from Greg.
Greg had tracked me down through social media. He was now married, had two children and had become a musician and entrepreneur. We exchanged several emails before connecting by phone.A month later, my wife and I drove to meet Greg and his family.
Standing at his front door, I felt unsure of what to say or do.So much time had passed. But after hugs and introductions, the years dissolved as we exchanged stories about our lives.I had brought along the only picture I could find containing the two of us from my sixth birthday. As he gazed at the photo, Greg handed me a small, old card: Greg's invitation to my sixth birthday party, signed “From Donnie” in faded blue crayon.
There were a few other keepsakes (纪念品) shared that evening, but none as meaningful as the invitation and the snapshot, companion pieces stored apart and saved for the reunion of two old friends.
语篇解读本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了老友重逢的故事。

There are three different kinds of friends in our life. I classify (分类) them according to how well I know them and how well they know me.
The first type of friend is just an acquaintance (熟人). This means that you only know their names. You might not even remember what they look like if you go away for a short vacation. You don't miss them when they are elsewhere. It is also this type of friend who gives you the most amount of aggravation (恼怒). Since most of the time you are placed in a position where you have to act friendly, you would not normally tell an acquaintance when he or she is doing something that makes you feel angry, such as tapping the fingers on a table or shouting loudly. I call them “pest friends”.
The second kind of friend is a “guest friend”. They are just social partners. You meet them at a certain location and at the end of the meeting you go your separate way and they go theirs. You don't talk too often with this sort of friend, and you don't share each other's secrets.
Lastly, we have “best friends”. This sort of friend is there when you need them. They know you as a person and they are there through thick and thin. Best friends are the ones that you can lean and depend on no matter what happens. If you need a listening ear, they will be the one to lend support.
Friends come in all different shapes and sizes. Every friend has an impact on our life.

A.can tell him/her about it directly
B.should stay away from him/her
C.should advise him/her to correct his/her behaviour
D.may find it hard to tell him/her not to do so
解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Since most of the time ... you would not normally tell an acquaintance when he or she is doing something that makes you feel angry”可知,在作者看来,当第一种朋友有恼人的行为时,你可能并不好意思直接跟他或她说不要这样做。
6.If someone is with you through thick and thin, it means ________.
A.he/she is your friend for sure
B.he/she agrees with whatever you say
C.you spend most of your time together
D.he/she is with you even when there are difficulties
解析:选D 推理判断题。根据第四段中的“This sort of friend is there when you need them ... that you can lean and depend on no matter what happens.”可知,最好的朋友与你同甘共苦意味着即使有困难,他或她也会和你在一起。
7.What will most probably be talked about in Paragraph 5
A.How to make friends.

When my daughter Sara was in the fifth grade, she came to me with a problem. “Marcy hates me!” she cried. “Because Kathy is my friend, too. She wants me to be her friend and nobody else's. You talk to Marcy. You tell her that I want to be her friend, but I can have other friends, too!”
Oh! I looked at her for a few moments, wondering how I got into this mess (困境), when suddenly an idea came to me.
Picking up two baskets from the living room, I explained, “When everyone is born, he or she has a little basket. This little one here is yours. The big one is mine. As you grow, so does the basket. You can see your little basket is inside mine because when you were born, there were too many things you couldn't do for yourself. I did everything you couldn't do on your own.”
She nodded.
“Well, as you grew older and began to do some things on your own, I began placing a few more things in your basket. When you learned to tie your shoes, that went in your basket.”
She said softly, “I can tie my own shoes.”
“Right. As you grow older, there will be more and more things you must do on your own.” As I spoke, I gradually took her basket out of mine and handed it to her. “You will finally carry your own basket with things only you can do.”
She looked up at me and said, “I understand. There are some things that I have to do for myself because they are in my basket.”

Once again, I was at a new school. So was a girl in my class named Paris. That was where the similarities ended.
I was tall and she was small.I was one of the oldest in the class while she was the youngest. My hair was thick, short and ugly while hers was long and beautiful.I was awkward and shy.She wasn't.I couldn't stand her, considering her my enemy. But she wanted to be friends.
One day, she invited me over and I said yes — I was too shocked to say no.Actually, no one had invited me to play before. But this girl, who wore the latest fashions, wanted to invite me.
She lived on the fourth floor in a two room place. When we got to the room she shared with her sister, she took out a big case of Barbies — which was my next surprise.I would have thought she had outgrown (因长大而不适用……) them.I had never played with them. But we sat on the floor of a walk in cupboard laughing as we made up crazy stories about the Barbies. That's when we found out that we both wanted to be writers when we were older. We both had wild imaginations.
We had a great time that afternoon. She showed me her outfits, which had mostly come from a designer clothing store down the block. The woman who owned it sometimes used her as a model for her newspaper ads and gave her clothes in exchange.

Friendship is one of the basic bonds between human beings. While the characteristics of friendship might vary from one country to another, people from all cultures not only enjoy friends but need them.
Many studies have shown that teenagers who have no friends often suffer from psychological disorders. It has been shown that teenagers, perhaps more than any other age group, need companionship and a sense of belonging. The negative consequences of loneliness have also been observed among the elderly. The death of a spouse often leaves a widow or a widower totally bereft (失去).If, however, they are surrounded by friends and relatives and if they are able to articulate (清楚表达) their feelings, they are more likely to recover from their grief.
“No man is an island.” In other words, we are all parts of society. We all need the love, admiration, respect and moral support of other people. If we are fortunate, our friends will provide us with all of these necessary aspects of life.
As most people observe, there are many levels of friendship. The degree or intensity of friendship varies depending on the personality of the individuals involved and the context of the relationships.Extroverts (性格外向者) enjoy being surrounded by many people whereas introverts (性格内向者) are perhaps content with fewer but more intense friendships.
Everyone is not equally open with all their friends. The degree of intimacy (密切) is determined by many factors.Close friends can be formed at any stage in one's life but they are usually very rare. Not very many people have more than a few really close friends.Irrespective of the level of intimacy, all friendships are based on reciprocity (互惠主义), honesty and a certain amount of love and affection.

How to Make Friends
Meeting new people and making friends can be difficult, but with a little effort and willingness to step outside of your comfort zone, you can easily make friends.
__1__. If you want to make friends, you first need to put yourself out there somehow in order to meet people. If you just sit alone, friends might come to you, but that's not likely. For example, if you're still in school, sit somewhere with other people. __2__, but try to choose one with at least 2 other people.
Pursue common interests. If you've discovered that the person you're talking to shares a common interest with you, ask them more about it and, if appropriate, whether they get together with others to pursue this interest. If so, this is a perfect opportunity to ask about joining them. __3__, they'll probably invite you.
Be reliable. When you say you'll do something, do it. __4__. If you show these qualities in your treatment of others, it will attract others who appreciate reliability and who will be reliable in return.
Keep in touch with your friends. People often lose contact with their friends because they're either too busy or just don't value their friends enough. __5__, the friendship may end up. And when you do try to contact them again, it can be hard to restore the friendship.
A.Make yourself available
B.Choose your friends wisely
C.If you clearly express your interest
D.It doesn't have to be a crowded table
E.When you lose your connection with a friend

When my daughter Sara was in the fifth grade, she came to me with a problem. “Marcy hates me!” she cried. “Because Kathy is my friend, too. She wants me to be her friend and nobody else's. You talk to Marcy. You tell her that I want to be her friend, but I can have other friends, too!”
