Ⅰ.阅读理解
A typical school day in the UK starts around 8:30 a.m.This is often even earlier than elsewhere in the world, with students sitting down to their first lesson at 7:30 a.m.in the US.The average teenager properly needs eight to nine hours' sleep each night, but in fact a lot of teenagers struggle to get this much.A lot of problems happen because our sleep patterns are not fixed, and they change as we grow.
So a later school start time could help to solve this problem, by ensuring to get their eight plus hours of sleep and react properly to their body's natural rhythms (规律).There has been a general change over the past 25 years to shorten the school day. This is not at the cost of teaching time (which has remained constant) but at the cost of natural breaks, which has led to reduced lunch time and lesson breaks.
Later start times could help teens' grades and health. This is mainly because it makes the management of children easier.Managing hundreds of children “playing” requires effective staffing. And there is always the fear that behavior worsens during breaks. So the theory goes that having them in class and strictly supervised must be better.
But this means that students barely have enough time to absorb what they were doing in maths before suddenly they are forced to study ancient history. And teaching staff also move through from one class to another, with hardly a rest or time to refocus.
Clearly rethinking the school day could benefit everyone included.Anyway, it could also lead to better achievement in teenagers and less of a struggle for parents in the mornings.

Hi, Li Zijun,
Thanks very much for your e-mail.I really enjoyed reading it.I think we have a lot in common.I wonder if our school life is similar too.
I go to a big high school in Sydney called Maylands High School. There are about 1,000 students and 80 or so teachers. My class has 25 students in it, which is normal for a Year 11 class. In the junior school there are about 30 students in a class.
In the senior high school we have lots of subjects to choose from, like maths, physics, chemistry, biology, history,German, law, geography, software design, graphic arts and media studies.(Different schools sometime have different optional subjects.) English is a must for everyone and we have to do at least three other subjects in Year 11 and 12.At the end of Year 12 we sit_for a public exam called the High School Certificate.
As well as school subjects, most of us do other activities at school such as playing a sport, singing in the choir or playing in the school band.We can also belong to clubs, such as the drama club, the chess club and the debating society.
We have a lot of homework to do in senior school to prepare for our exam, so unless I have basketball practice, I usually go straight home and start studying.I arrive home at about 4 pm, make myself a snack and work till 6 pm.Then I help the family to make dinner and we all eat together.I'm usually back in my room studying by 8 pm.I stop at about 10 o'clock and watch TV or read a book for half an hour to relax. On Saturdays, I usually go out with my family or with friends and I sleep in till late on Sunday morning. Then it's back to the books on Sunday afternoon.
How about you What's your school life like Do you have a lot of homework What do you do to relax when you're not studying I'm looking forward to finding out.
Your Australian friend,
Terrie

I can remember being in middle school and high school and always wanting to be able to wear a hat while walking through the hallways or sitting in class. So far, I have always been fond of wearing different types of hats whenever I go out. I think the ban on hats has been around for as long as there have been schools, but I feel the reasoning behind the ban is pretty correct, especially with all of the violence that we tend to hear about going on with today's youth.
One of the main reasons why kids are not allowed to wear hats in school anymore is the fact that the hats could be hiding a weapon or drugs which would definitely not be a good thing for the other kids or teachers in the building. It seems that this issue has not been going on for very long in the school system, but it is definitely starting to pick up the pace as more and more kids react with violence towards their fellow students.
I am all for the ban of wearing hats in today's schools and feel that the safer that each and every child is, the better it will be for everyone in the long run. I think that we should also eventually look into installing metal detectors (探测器) in all of the schools as well because you really can't be very safe these days. It hurts to think about children causing such violence as we have all seen on TV over the past few years, but the threat is very real and should be taken seriously.

A.There are probably dangerous things in them.
B.Teachers are not fond of wearing hats.
C.Hats are likely to have an effect on kids' studies.
D.Kids are always buying extremely expensive hats.

It's very exciting for most of us students to be at a a new school, but it can be scary for some of us.We might feel worried that we don't know anyone here and feel lonely, if we can fit in the school life or whether the teachers are kind.
However, as time goes by, especially after getting involved more in the school life here, we feel comfortable and make friends here.
In my opinion, we should try our best to be ourselves and fit in the new school at the same time as soon as possible.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Bobby was getting cold sitting out in his back yard in the snow. Bobby didn't wear shoes; he didn't like them and anyway he was a poor boy. And, try as he might, he could not come up with an idea for his mother's Christmas gift. Ever since his father had passed away three years ago, the family of five had struggled. Although the family was short of money and material things, they had love and family unity (团结).
Bobby had three sisters, who did the housework for their mother. All three of his sisters had already made beautiful gifts for their mother. Wiping tears from his eyes, Bobby kicked the snow and started to walk down to the street where the shops and stores opened. It was starting to get dark and Bobby turned to walk home when suddenly he discovered a shiny dime (十分硬币) on the street.
As he held his newfound treasure, a feeling of warmth spread throughout his body and he walked into the first store he saw. His excitement quickly turned cold when salesperson after salesperson told him that he could not buy anything with only a dime. Finally he saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him, Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother. The shop owner looked at Bobby and his dime. Then he put his hand on Bobby's shoulder and said to him, “You just wait here and I'll see what I can do for you.” Then the shop owner left. All alone in the shop, Bobby began to feel alone and afraid. After a little while, the shop owner came out and moved to the counter (柜台). There were twelve red roses, with leaves of green and tiny white flowers all tied together with a big silver bow.

Paragraph 1:
Bobby's heart sank as the owner picked them up and placed them into a long white box. The shop owner said, “I just happened to have some roses on sale for ten cents a dozen. Would you like them?” Of course Bobby was very glad, and he answered loudly, “Yes, I like them.” When the man placed the long box into his hands, he knew he had a gift for his mother. Walking out of the door, Bobby heard the shop owner say, “Merry Christmas!”
Paragraph 2:
Seeing this, the shop owner's wife asked what happened. With tears in his eyes, the owner replied, “When I looked at him, I saw myself. Many years ago, I was also a poor boy with nothing to buy my mother a gift. A tall and kind man, whom I never knew, told me that he wanted to give me ten dollars. When I saw that little boy tonight, I remembered that man right away and I gave my best twelve red roses to him.”UNIT 1 课时跟踪检测(三) 阅读写作融会练

You may not know a lot of people when you start high school. Maybe your friends from middle school are going to a different high school. Even if you know other freshmen (新生), you still feel nervous that you don't know any upper-classmen. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces
Most high schools hold a freshman orientation (训练) before school actually starts. These are helpful not only because you learn your way around the building and get to meet some of your teachers, but you also get to meet fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces.
When you talk to people at orientation, you'll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They're all new to the school and don't know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with your classmates can help you develop friendships.
The work in high school is something freshmen are probably worried about. The work in high school builds on what you learned in middle school, giving you a more advanced knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it's a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.
High school also has more after-school activities than middle school did, such as clubs, music and theater groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.
Middle school taught you the basics of academics, time management, and social skills while providing you with a little extra support and guidance. High school gives you the chance to learn how to be more independent and responsible.

When comparing US and Chinese schools, despite many differences, one finds a number of unexpected similarities.
Students in both countries, in some ways, have much in common. This includes their experiences with popular culture like technology and social media, mutual care for the environment, and the fact that all were terribly influenced by COVID-19.
Students in both countries belong to what might be described as a “TikTok culture”, although this Chinese app is likely more popular in the US than in China itself. The Chinese term kuaicanshi yule, which means fast-food type entertainment, is the better expression, one that conveys “snackable content” for often meme-oriented, fast moving fashion that compete for short attention spans.Whatever the app or device, students have been much influenced by technology, positively and negatively. In fact, Chinese students do face more controls from their schools about their use of social media, although many are good at finding ways to avoid them.
Furthermore, many students in both countries are attracted to similar styles, in both fashion and food, in music and film, with Chinese and American students often being similarly up-to-date on the latest hits, including television series.
Finally, what both have most in common is the strong wish to live a good life, be successful and secure. The US and China approach these wishes in different ways educationally, but both could learn from each other. This is especially true given the fact that we all live in an increasingly globalized world, and must learn to work together to solve not only global problems like climate change and disease outbreaks, but unfortunate frictions between the US and China.Indeed, with the last point in mind, a significant weakness in the educational systems of both countries is that neither really understands the other. This is not a new problem, but solving it needs serious attention.

When recalling my high school — Gonzaga College High School, I am excited. It was founded in 1821, which was in the center part of Washington, D.C., within the shouting distance of the Capitol Building.
Seeing my older brother experienced Gonzaga a few years before me, I had an idea of how special this school was before my entering to school.Through him, I could see the pride and friendship among Gonzaga students.
My true love for Gonzaga, however, began in my freshman year. I remember during my freshman guidance (新生入学指导), the team spirit organization sat our class down on the playground and taught us all the game cheers. I remember feeling a sense of energy and pride among these students that I had never experienced from a high school before. I mean, it was just a high school — how much school pride could these kids really have But it was not just a high school, and it only took a few football games for me to realize that I went to the most prideful school in the Washington, D.C.
I spent the rest of my first year meeting some of the coolest and most interesting people I have ever known. Some of the funniest, smartest and kindest guys I have ever met went to this school. No matter how athletic (擅长运动的) you were or how much money your parents had, you were just another Gonzaga kid. You were friends with everyone. If you went to Gonzaga, teacher or student, you were in on the joke.
When my freshman life came to an end, I began to understand what it meant to be part of Gonzaga students. Serving the poor right there on Campus at the McKenna center, I got a view on poor people that I will value for the rest of my life.Through football I learned how to develop better self-control and built some of the greatest friendships. In the classroom, I had many laughs with friends and teachers alike.I also learned how to manage my time and gained a lot of information, but most importantly, I learned how to put the world and others before myself.

In America, when the eighth graders leave the middle school, they are often worried about moving to the high school. It is a hard time for them, but it can be an exciting one as well. To make it easier, students need to get familiar with their school.
Even though they've done this already in the middle school, it's still important to find where their classrooms are. Most schools take students to the high school for a visit at the end of their eighth grade year. And, most schools also have a freshman (新生) speech for parents and students before the first year begins. Sometimes the main office will give away a map of the school. This can help students and parents to find different places in the school.
One way to know your high school more and make new friends is to join a club or play a sport.Schools often offer chances to join different clubs and sports. Fall activities begin in August before the first day of school. If you are not interested in sports, there are clubs for any interest, such as drama, dance, chess, photography, community service, etc. These clubs allow students from different grades. By joining an activity, students can find new friendships, not to mention improving their chances in future college applications (申请). The school office will have a list of activities offered at the school and information on how to join them.
What's more, to have a great start to a high school year, students can write down some of their worries, and ask for help from teachers and school workers.
