During our childhood, we had cultural shows at school where singing, dancing, dramas and speeches were performed by the school students.Among many such programs that took place in the school, one drama actually made me laugh a lot.
It was a drama called Cinderella that actually turned out to be very comical. The person who directed that drama seemed to mainly train the students to memorize the dialogues which were well performed by them.
But what did the performers wear? While Cinderella was a cute little girl, she did not wear anything beautiful at the ball. She wore house slippers (拖鞋), and one of her slippers couldn't come off her foot when she was running away after midnight from the ball. She tried many times to take it off and finally it dropped and she ran away from the stage.
That missing slipper was found by a prince, who was actually a girl, dressed up as a boy but not looking like a boy.She held it up.Feeling a deep sense of shame, she acted her part showing it to the audience.More mistakes in the drama were that Cinderella's stepsisters were poorly dressed too at the ball and neither her stepsisters nor their mom looked like bad guys.
In the end, a fairy tale drama turned out to be a funny play and everyone had hearty laughs.Since it could give so much fun to the audience, it was not altogether a failure. And the audience laughed loudly as the drama ended, giving performers encouragement.
Cultural programs like this are needed for school students.Students don't need any special skills and the programs don't have to be fully perfect. They need to be organized in schools so that students can take part, share laughs and free their minds.

When I worked on the manufacturing shop (车间) floor, we rarely saw plant managers, except for one. He often walked through the plant. He checked out product quality. He stopped for a brief word — usually no more than a “hello”. He wasn't outgoing. He didn't display any of the qualities typically associated with a “leader”. Yet we liked him.
In a study of University of Pittsburgh in 1992, researchers had four women attend a number of different classes. Their attendance varied: one woman might attend every class; a different woman might attend only a few. What didn't vary was their behaviour. None of the women spoke in class or spoke to other students.
At the end of the term, students were asked which woman they liked best. Who “won”? Women who attended the highest number of classes. According to the researchers, “Mere exposure had weak effects on familiarity, but strong effects on attraction and similarity.” Or in non-researcher-words: If I see you frequently, I naturally like you more. That's the power of showing up.
Knowing someone will show up in the future also matters. In a 1967 University of Minnesota's study, researchers gave study participants profiles of two people and told them that one would be a partner in future discussion groups. When asked, the participants said they liked their future partner more. Even though the profiles were almost identical.
Want your team or your customers to like you more Show up. Drop in. Drop by. Send a brief note. Make a quick phone call. You don't have to say or do much. Then be consistent in your behaviour. In time, people will expect you to drop in or drop by, whether in person or virtually. Anticipating future contact will make them like you more.

A well-organized backpack helps to make sure that your child has everything needed for school. Problems start when it becomes overloaded. Having a heavy backpack can lead to bad posture, back pain and worse.
The problem is so common that the American Occupational Therapy Association created National School Backpack Awareness Day. It's held every September to share ideas and solve backpack problems to keep kids safe.
You can protect your kids by making sure that their backpacks are properly fitted and loaded. Here's some advice.
When shopping for a backpack, make sure that its width and length match each child's body. It shouldn't hang more than 4 inches below the waist. The bottom of the backpack should be close to the curve of the child's lower back — if it shakes back and forth, spine (脊柱) problems can develop.
Other features to focus on include wide and adjustable shoulder belts. A waist, hip and chest belt will reduce the load. A backpack with many compartments (隔层) allows for its contents to be well spaced. For traffic safety, the backpack should have reflective parts that will help car drivers see your child in low-light conditions.
Before loading the backpack, have your child put it on and adjust the belts for a fit. Put the heaviest things at the back of the backpack. Arrange the contents so things won't slide around as your child moves.
When filled, a backpack shouldn't weigh more than 5% to 10% of your child's weight, so 8 pounds are at most for a child who weighs 80 pounds. Don't guess — test it on your own.If the backpack is too heavy, take out a book or another thing that your child can carry in his or her hands or store in a locker.
Finally, make sure your child wears the backpack on his or her back and not depend on just one shoulder.

D.To deal with kids' safety of backpacks.

13.The reflective parts of backpacks are used to ________.
A.keep kids' spine safe
B.get kids' books well-spaced
C.protect kids in the darkness
D.let cars stop by the roadside
解析:选C 细节理解题。根据第五段最后一句可知,书包上的反光部分是为了让司机能在视线不好的情况下看到孩子,从而避免交通事故的发生。
14.If a kid weighs 100 pounds, the weight of his backpack is at most ________.
A.5 pounds B.8 pounds
C.10 pounds D.7 pounds
解析:选C 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中的“When filled, a backpack shouldn't weigh more than 5% to 10% of your child's weight”可知,书包的重量最多不能超过孩子体重的10%,所以一个重100磅的孩子的书包最多不能超过10磅。

If you feel depressed, it's best to do something about it — the depression doesn't just disappear on its own. In addition to getting help from a doctor, here are four things you can do to feel better.
Exercise.
Take a 15- to 30-minute walk every day — or dance, jog or bike if you prefer. __16__ But make yourself do it anyway. Ask a friend to exercise with you if you need to be motivated (激发……的积极性). Once you get in the exercise habit, it won't take long to notice a difference in your mood.
Identify troubles, but don't think a lot about them.
Try to identity any situation that has contributed to your depression. When you know what makes you feel blue and why, talk about it with a caring friend. __17__ If there's no one to tell, pouring your heart out to a journal works just as well. Once you air out these thoughts and feelings, turn your attention to something positive. Take action to deal with problems.
Express yourself.
__18__ By exercising your imagination (painting, drawing, writing, dancing, etc.), you not only get those creative juices flowing, but also release some positive emotions. Take time to play with a friend or a pet, or do something fun for yourself. Find something to laugh about — a funny movie, perhaps. __19__
Look on the bright side.
Depression affects a person's thoughts, making everything seem unhappy and hopeless. If depression has you noticing only the negative, make an effort to notice the good things in life. Try to notice one thing, then try to think of one more. Consider your strengths, gifts, or blessings. __20__ Depression takes time to heal (治愈).
A.Laughter helps lighten your mood.
B.Most of all, don't forget to be patient with yourself.
C.Yoga can also help people with depression feel better.

参考范文:
Dear Manager,
I'm an exchange student from China. Yesterday I went to your cinema to see a film. The film was very good, but I did not enjoy it because there were some problems in the cinema.
First, the film was delayed as there were so many advertisements at the beginning. It was rather annoying. Secondly, the sound of the film was so loud that I could hardly hear it. Third, the EXIT signs could not be seen clearly, which presented potential safety hazards. And if something terrible should happen, it would be difficult for people to get out quickly.
Please take good consideration of my advice and make some improvements.
Yours faithfully,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The whole class burst out laughing as Mohi rushed into the classroom. He was a strange sight. His half-buttoned white shirt revealed a red striped loose-fitting pajama (睡衣) top underneath, and instead of white school shoes, he had on a pair of bright green sandals (凉鞋) that were two sizes too big. The physics teacher's hand froze in the middle of writing a formula on the blackboard.
Mohi said in a quiet voice, “Sorry, teacher,” and ran with quick short steps to his seat. Mr Tan glared at the rest of the students. The laughter quickly died down. Mohi's classmates always looked forward to Mondays. Nine times out of ten, they would be entertained by Mohi's late arrival and his odd appearance which usually included inappropriate clothing. Paragraph 1:
The music played on. Hamed peered in through a window. His eyes widened in surprise. In the middle of the living room, Mohi was playing the violin. His eyes were closed in concentration as he drew the bow over the strings expertly. He played flawlessly so much so that it sounded like a recording. Then an idea hit Hamed. It was the tradition of the school to have a concert for the teachers. Every class had to contribute an item. It was a good chance for Mohi to show his talent and be accepted by his classmates. Thinking of that, Hamed left quietly.
Paragraph 2:
Before Teachers' Day concert, Hamed convinced the class to let Mohi perform. Short of ideas, the class agreed. On the day of the concert, both the teachers and students were surprised to see the school's clumsiest student walking on stage with a violin. When he started to play, the audience fell silent. Jaws dropped. As the last note ended, there was a moment of silence. Then the audience erupted into thunderous applause. Mohi became a sensation and had many fans in his final year of school. Mohi and Hamed became the best of friends eventually.UNIT 1 单元验收评价(一)—单元语基温故

8.What does the first paragraph serve as
A.An introduction. B.A background.
C.A comment. D.An explanation.

10.What did the University of Minnesota's study find
A.Familiarity contributes to likability.
B.Identical behaviour enhances likability.
C.Future partnership increases likability.
D.Virtual contact benefits likability.
11.What is the text mainly about
A.The power of likability.
B.Research on likability.
C.The definition of likability.
D.The application of likability.

12.What's the purpose of National School Backpack Awareness Day
A.To focus on kids' health.
B.To keep kids off heavy load.
C.To invent new backpacks for kids.
D.To deal with kids' safety of backpacks.
13.The reflective parts of backpacks are used to ________.
A.keep kids' spine safe
B.get kids' books well-spaced
C.protect kids in the darkness
D.let cars stop by the roadside
14.If a kid weighs 100 pounds, the weight of his backpack is at most ________.
A.5 pounds B.8 pounds
C.10 pounds D.7 pounds
15.What's the main idea of the passage
A.How to choose suitable backpacks for kids.
B.Schools put too much load on kids.
C.Kids' back pain needs dealing with.
D.Never use one shoulder to wear backpacks.

D.First of all, you should know why you feel so depressed.
E.People who are depressed may not feel much like being active.
F.With depression, a person's creativity and sense of fun may seem blocked.
G.Talking is a way to release the feelings and to receive some understanding.

That day, it was the loose-fitting pajama top and green sandals.
Mohi lived just a street away from the school. He walked to school daily. Students passing by in buses would yell his name together just to see him jump and stop in his tracks.
