My love for libraries blossomed when I joined the public library. From the age of 8, I was allowed to walk from my home to the downtown library, housed above the police station.Once the librarian gave me my first membership card, I could enjoy a range of books, which started with Little House in the Big Woods.I was addicted instantly, and this love of libraries and reading would change my life, allowing me to one day create a safe space for high-school kids, too.
By the time I was in high school, I could read the authors that we were studying in class, including Charles Dickens, Mark Twain and Emily Bront .During the summer months, I got caught up in Gone with the Wind and Anna Karenina.
When I studied English literature at university, I thought it was time to build my own library. For the next 40 years, I continued to collect books.Until one day, I realized that all my books had become a part of the house, like wallpaper.
Toward the end of my teaching career, I became a teacher-librarian at my old high school, where I had first learned English literature. This position resumed (恢复) my love and appreciation for libraries.I never forgot how wonderful it was to be surrounded by books.I had a generous budget for my classes, so I searched for novels that would interest my teenage audience and hopefully spark (激发) a love of books.Fantasy, science-fiction, graphic novels — I bought almost any type of book that my students wanted to read.I bought sofas and comfortable chairs, turning the library into an inclusive (包容的) public space, safe for everyone.
In doing so, I realized that the library isn't just a place to do research. They are, in fact, places that offer an opportunity to engage with the past, present and future. All that is required is a tiny bit of curiosity.Libraries are places that should be full of life. They help us adjust to the world, and their doors must be kept open to everyone — for free!

Self-driving vehicles will rely on cameras, sensors and artificial intelligence (AI) to recognise and respond to road and traffic conditions, but sensing is the most effective for objects and movement in the neighbourhood of the vehicle. Not everything important in a car's environment will be caught by the vehicle's camera.Another vehicle approaching at high speed on a collision (碰撞) track might not be visible until it's too late. This is why vehicle-to-vehicle communication is undergoing rapid development. Our research shows that cars will need to be able to chat and cooperate on the road, although the technical challenges are considerable.
Applications for vehicle-to-vehicle communication range from vehicles driving together in a row, to safety messages about nearby emergency vehicles.Vehicles could alert each other to avoid collisions or share notices about passers-by and bicycles. From as far as several hundred metres away, vehicles could exchange messages with one another or receive information from roadside units about nearby incidents or dangerous road conditions through 4G/5G network.
A high level of AI seems required for such vehicles, not only to self-drive from A to B, but also to react intelligently to messages received.Vehicles will need to plan, reason, strategise and adapt in the light of information received in real time and to carry out cooperative behaviours. For example, a group of autonomous vehicles might avoid a route together because of potential risks, or a vehicle could decide to drop someone off earlier due to messages received, a foreseen crowding ahead.
Further applications for vehicle-to-vehicle communication are still being researched, including how to perform cooperative behaviours.

We know that reading is good for children and for adults as well. Now a new study suggests that just being around books has its benefits — even if you don't read them a lot.A team of researchers in Australia finds that growing up in a home with a sizable library improves literacy, number sense and even technological knowledge in later life.
The researchers were interested in what is called the “Radiation Effect”.“Radiation Effect” is a situation where children grow up around books, even though they don't read them as much as their parents would like them to.But somehow books benefit them.
Joanna Sikora, a sociologist at the Australian National University, and her colleagues studied data collected between 2011 and 2015.The survey tested more than 160,000 adults from 31 different societies, and it included a question about how many books testers had in their homes during adolescence (青春期).
“We found that people who grew up around books had better literacy, numeracy and digital problem-solving skills than people who had fewer books growing up but had similar education levels, similar jobs and even similar adult habits.” In fact, teens who only made it through high school but were raised in a bookish environment were successful as well in adulthood as college graduates who grew up in a house lacking books.
“So if we grow up in a house, in a home where parents enjoy books, where books are given as birthday presents and cherished and valued, this is something that becomes a part of our identity and gives us this lifelong influence to improve our reading and writing ability,” said Sikora.
So keep those shelves filled with books.Your kids will not only be grateful, they'll be more likely to be able to spell “grateful” correctly as well.

At daybreak, his son was watching the bird carefully. There was a light in his eyes for the first time in many weeks. “Beautiful!” said Igor. “I've never seen it before in the forest. What's its name?” “That's a good question.I'll find out and tell you.” The next morning, when the father entered Igor's room, he found the boy sitting up in bed, trying to touch the bird. The last time Igor sat up in bed was many weeks before.“What's it called?” the boy asked.“Oh, dear, I'm still not sure.”
Late on that night, Igor's father went into his son's room quietly and made the thread a little shorter. Then the bird was hung a little higher above Igor's head. Three days later, he found Igor kneeling on the bed, trying to touch the bird. His hand was very near it.“Have you decided on the name?” “Not yet, my son,” his father replied.

4.What can we learn about the author during her school time

8.What is the first paragraph mainly about
A.The reasons for the accidents by self-driving vehicles.
B.The research about applications for self-driving vehicles.
C.The importance of artificial intelligence of self-driving vehicles.
D.The reasons for developing communication between self-driving vehicles.
9.What does the underlined word “alert” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Alarm. B.Condemn.
C.Ignore. D.Govern.
10.What can we learn about roadside units
A.They classify the vehicles on the road.
B.They can improve bad road conditions.
C.They take over the passing vehicles.
D.They serve as efficient information stations.
11.What is the best title for the text
A.When do vehicles communicate
B.The reasons why a high level of AI is important
C.Vehicle-to-vehicle communication is coming
D.What do applications for vehicle-to-vehicle communication need

12.Which is the benefit for children being around books
A.They will work with numbers well.
B.They will have a big library at home.
C.They will fall in love with literature.
D.They will form the habit of reading a lot.
13.The “Radiation Effect” might work for________.
A.a child who doesn't read books
B.a child who receives higher education
C.a child who visits bookstores a lot
D.a child who grows up without books around
14.What can we know from Paragraph 4
A.College graduates raised without books are surely not successful.
B.Teens, after graduating from high schools, can find better jobs.
C.People raised in a bookish environment can solve real-life problems easily.
D.Children being around books can be successful in adulthood.
