(2023·南通市调研测试)A rise in interest in crafting (手工艺), coupled with a greater awareness of the environment under lockdown, has led to an increase in interest in furoshiki — the Japanese art of fabric wrapping recently.
Furoshiki is traditional Japanese cloth used to transport food, clothes or gifts. It is increasingly being accepted by shoppers as an alternative to paper. The cloth is easy to use: gifts are placed in the centre of the fabric, which is then tucked (卷起) around the object and fastened with a knot (结).
Because fabric is so much more malleable (可塑的) than wrapping paper, it can be used to make even the most awkward shaped gifts look professionally wrapped. The COVID-19 pandemic (大流行病) has brought the environment into a new focus for people, causing people to make more environmentally conscious decisions around what they buy.
Part of the appeal of fabric wrapping is that it is a present itself. The receiver not only can enjoy a beautifully-wrapped gift but can then reuse the cloth to give a gift of their own.
Some customers use their cloth within family or friendship circles, so that it eventually makes its way back to them. There's certain magic and tradition in passing it from person to person.
Then there's the rising interest in craft.Fabric wrapping is often pared to standard wrapping paper, fabric wrapping offers more chances to experiment with different folding techniques and the way it lends itself to botanical decoration. There is a huge appetite for people wanting to learn new craft skills and perhaps create their own gifts for friends and family.
The practice of using furoshiki became widespread during Japan's Edo period (1603 - 1868), when people bundled (捆起来) their clothes in fabric while visiting public baths. The custom was generally the preserve of older people in Japan, but younger generations are taking it on board as a result of the pandemic. They have started to reconsider their ways of life.

“I don't want to go.” Gina moved her feet slightly and hung her shoulders.
Mom continued packing a bag.“We're going to Uncle Rich's in Montana for summer vacation. He's your dad's brother, and we go every year.”
Gina stormed out of her mom's room.“Nobody ever thinks of me.”
“That's enough. We're going,” replied Mom angrily.
Their August vacation came sooner than Gina wanted. Before she knew it, she and the family were at Uncle Rich's ranch (牧场).Uncle Rich grabbed her dad and hugged him.
“Good to see you,” said Uncle Rich.
Gina's brother and sister were twins and two years younger, so they didn't realize what an inconvenience and bore being on a ranch was. They raced to see animals.Gina grabbed her bag.“I'm going to my room,” she told her parents.
“Wait a minute, Gina,” said Uncle Rich. “I've got something to show you.” “You come too,” he said to Gina's parents.
At the pen (围栏), Gina saw the horse. It was of medium size.It had a fine, soft black coat and one white foot. There was a wide white patch (斑纹) that ran down the center of its face.Gina fell in love with it at first sight.“Wow! What a horse!”
“He's a mustang,” said Uncle Rich. “Mustangs are free horses who live in the wild.We found him stuck in the mud down by the river.I didn't know how he got there.Mу friend and I roped him and managed to get him out. This mustang is a beauty.”
Gina kicked the dirt.“Can I help care for him?”
Uncle Rick laughed.“You bet.The more hands we have, the better.Just don't get too attached.Once we're sure he's Okay, we'll let him loose.Mustangs went from over a million at the beginning of the 20th century to less than 17,000 in 1970.They were hunted for meat.”

(2023·潍坊模拟)Being taken off the endangered species list doesn't guarantee a carefree future for whales.Recent research estimates that the population of Pacific gray whales off North America's West Coast has dwindled by almost a quarter since 2016.Starting in 2019, alarming numbers of dead gray whales were spotted on beaches and floating offshore throughout their habitat, from Mexico to Alaska. The National Marine Fisheries Service defined it as an “Unusual Mortality Event (UME)”.UMEs are declared when a “significant die-off” occurs and when information is collected to clarify why it occurs.
The Arctic has had historically low levels of sea ice in recent years, upending the delicate ecosystem that sustains gray whales.Like other migrants, they don't feed on their winter breeding grounds (繁殖地) or along their migration, and must gain weight during the summer to sustain themselves through the rest of the year.Observers using air photography noted the whales looked skinnier and arrived in Mexico in poor condition, which suggested they were not finding enough food during the summer.
This die-off is alarmingly similar to the events of 20 years ago, when another UME resulted in a significant drop in the gray whale population.Although the cause was ultimately undetermined, it was thought that the population reached “carrying capacity” — it grew too large for the environment to support it.Although that idea has been suggested for this die-off as well, it's more likely blamed on the changing conditions of the Arctic.
Gray whales, hunted almost to extinction by the mid-20th century, were one of the first to be protected from hunting. The eastern North Pacific population rebounded without pressure from whaling and was taken off the endangered species list; the western North Pacific population is still listed as endangered. This die-off is a reminder that “delisting” doesn't indicate a population's secure future.New threats arise, climate change upends habitats, and continued monitoring is needed in case a crash comes.
1.What does the underlined word “dwindled” in Paragraph 1 mean
A.Increased. B.Bounced.
C.Multiplied. D.Dropped.
根据下文中的“Starting in 2019 ...Mexico to Alaska.”
2.What will gray whales usually do in winter
A.Consume few calories. B.Travel south to breed.
C.March back to Alaska. D.Seek food in the Arctic.
根据第二段中的“Like other migrants ...through the rest of the year.”
3.What might be the main cause of the current UME
A.Serious illnesses.
B.Sea pollution.
C.Environmental changes.
D.Limited carrying capacity.
根据第三段中的“Although that idea ...it's more likely blamed on the changing conditions of the Arctic.”
4.What's the author's attitude to the “delisting”?
A.Favourable. B.Concerned.
C.Intolerant. D.Regretful.
根据最后一段中的“This die-off is ...population's secure future.”
