School activities for students during COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic is causing worldwide concern for elementary and secondary school students' mental condition. The following are some possible activities that can be carried out to help them and also create a safe and healthy school environment.
John's and Mary's thoughts
Students are presented with a picture which says that John and Mary have different thoughts after they have heard of the coronavirus. Then students are invited to guess and write the characters' thoughts on the picture. This activity uses a “projective” method, as students are not asked what their feelings are, but instead, they project their feelings onto the characters.
When I'm worried
After talking about what the characters may think, students can now turn their attention to themselves. They are asked to list their common worries, but most importantly, they are directed to think about some response measures and the helpful relationships they can rely on.This is a vital exercise, for it shifts students' focus from their worries to the coping strategies.
Seeking a balance
Students are asked to provide three key recommendations to prevent infection.Teachers can pick out the positive behavior and correct any incorrect suggestions. It's also important to strike a balance between the recommended healthy behavior and the concept that microorganisms are a natural part of the environment and that many of them play a key role in sustaining human life.
Videos to know and understand viruses
It is advisable to plan science lessons on microorganisms.Students can know more about the pandemic by studying microbial (微生物的) life, and thus they can understand what viruses are and how they spread. But be careful not to bring anxiety and avoid talking about scary messages.

Everyone in my drama class saw the paper in my hands shaking when I stood up to try out for a lead role in the yearly school Thanksgiving play.I was there because the teacher wanted everyone to try out for a part.
Being shy and not confident, I began nervously reading the part for the main character, Star. She had no parents.Feeling so sorry for her, I finished reading.
Later when reading the name list, the teacher looked at me and announced, “Patty, you play e and get your script (剧本).”I was shocked.Jim, an excellent boy, was playing the other lead.To learn my lines, I practised every day and finally memorized them.I became more confident and happier.
Then we started practising acting.Jim played the character, a Scrooge (吝啬鬼), who is unwilling to put a candle in his window so that the light will show passers-by the slippery ice on the path below. On the Thanksgiving day, Star comes along, falls on the ice and gets injured.
Finally feeling bad, the Scrooge helps her up.To thank him, Star kisses his hand.
One day, before our drama class started, I saw a terrible drawing of me on the blackboard with words: Falling Star.I was laughed at by someone.
The teacher asked,“Who did this?” Nobody knew.We started rehearsing (排练), but my heart wasn't in it.The teacher told me not to care about the silly trick; it wouldn't happen again. But I was sad and anxious, wanting to quit. Finally I moved on and continually worked hard for the play.
Soon it was the day before the show.It was time for the dress rehearsal.I was excited.Everything went smoothly at the dress rehearsal until the scene where I slipped on the ice and the Scrooge helped me up.
When I kissed his hand, a terrible noise and laughter sounded from behind the set.I quickly left the stage and hurried into an empty room. With tears, I said, “I can't do it.Please get someone else!”

(2023·深圳六校联考) In 1939, seven-year-old Miriam Schreiber should have started first grade.Instead, she spent that year — and the following five — trying to survive. She was living in Poland when World War Ⅱ broke out.“My entire life was ruined within minutes,” she says.“I was looking forward to starting school.” She never made it.And not having a degree has always been a thorn in her side.
Decades later, though, the 89-year-old Holocaust survivor finally got something she had always longed for.Kapiloff Brander, director of community programs at Jewish Family Services, reached out to the New England Jewish Academy, a Jewish high school, to ask whether the school could help Miriam fulfill her wish.Richard Nabel, the principal of the school, brought a few senior students to Miriam's home to hear her story before they came up with the idea of presenting her an honorary diploma at the school's graduation ceremony.
Miriam suffered a lot in a slave labor camp in Siberia before she got liberated in 1946.She and her remaining family members went to a refugee camp in Germany, where she got married and had her first child at the age of 16.Having spent years in refugee camps in different countries, she finally immigrated to America in 1960.Getting a formal education was never an option for her but she learned seven languages over the years.“I educated myself,” she says.“I read books day and night.I still do.”
On August 16th, during a socially distanced ceremony in the school gym, Miriam was presented with a high school diploma from the New England Jewish Academy.“There_weren't_too_many_dry_eyes among the 30 of us there,” says Nabel.Miriam's family was especially moved.“I'm not sure she even realizes the importance of that moment to me,” says Bernie, her eldest son.“I am so proud of her.”
