The Stories Behind 3 of the Photos from Our Pictures of the Year
Each year, National Geographic will publish a special issue to showcase some of the impressive images taken around the globe to celebrate the high-quality photography. This year, 49 were selected as the best photos of the year out of millions of images, and the photo editors give a glimpse behind the scenes of 3 images included in 2022 Pictures of the Year annual special issue.
Qaanaaq, Greenland//Kiliii Yüyan
Photographer Kiliii Yuyan is no stranger to documenting the daily lives of native peoples and the issues they face around the world. He commits himself to capturing(拍摄,捕获) surprising and unique images for each story while his colleague Mallory has quit in their tracks. In his story, two cousins push strollers (婴儿车) across a snowy plain in Greenland on their way to annual dogsled races. The story itself challenges readers to think about how to treat their ecosystem without destroying it and gives more insight into the daily lives of Inughuit women.
Canary Islands, Spain//Carsten Peter
It’s hard to capture the speed, texture, and sense of danger of lava flowing from a volcanic eruption, but that’s what photographer Carsten Peter achieved with this image. He documented the 85-day eruption for National Geographic, then returned to focus on the damage and on the scientific fieldwork that had been done once the slow-moving lava had cooled.
Minneriya. Sri Lanka//Brent Stirton
Photographer Brent Stirton provided a window into these animals’ lives, which she hopes will increase awareness and stir up sympathy through the photo.
The image was tough to capture not only because Stirton needed to get close to the wild animals for the frame but also because it was a challenging time to work in Sri Lanka. The government was collapsing in economic decline. “I think there’s an opportunity to show people a side of animals they may have not seen before,” she says.

Jason Ahn’s favorite parts of Marvel’s(漫威) Iron Man movies are scenes showing inventions being developed. Many of these scenes are similar to the experiences he went through himself before winning national recognition for an innovative classroom whiteboard design.
For Ahn, 17, a rising senior at Ames High School in Iowa in the US, there was a good month’s worth of nights staying up until 4 am — before going to school the next day — during which he first gained the idea for an auto rolling and erasing whiteboard, or ARE Board. He then submitted it to the Raytheon Technologies Invention Convention US Nationals.
All that work paid off for Ahn in 2022 when he was among inventors from across the country to win awards at the competition.
In his physics class — and throughout most of his time in school — he noticed his teachers struggle with having to write and erase(擦) the same notes for each of their classes; that was if they could even reach the top of their traditional whiteboards. However, electronic whiteboards are too expensive.
He made a working prototype (原型) of a whiteboard on a motorized(机动的) conveyor belt system that can be scrolled (滚动) up and down. It is more time and space efficient than a traditional whiteboard. He wanted to make something similar to an electronic whiteboard but far cheaper and easy to use.
“I’ve seen my friends kind of joking, ‘Isn’t this kind of a step backward We’ve evolved all the way to electronic whiteboards’.” Ahn said.
“In some cases, it’s good to keep the traditional aspects and characteristics of some fundamental tools,” because markers and erasers are more tangible (有形的) and accessible to people, he added.
One of the awards he won at the competition provided him with a patent lawyer to help him get a patent application with the fee covered. He’d be willing to sell a patent to a company.
Ahn thinks of things in daily life that might make the world a better place. “I’m making a notebook of all the ideas that I’m thinking of,” he said.
24. What about Marvel’s Iron Man movies interests Ahn the most
A. Iron Man’s hi-tech suit. B. The hi-tech fighting scenes.
C. The various hi-tech inventions used. D. The scenes of hi-tech products being made.
25 What inspired Ahn to invent ARE Board
A. His teachers’ struggles to erase whiteboards. B. An electronic whiteboard he came across.
C. A motorized conveyor belt system he found. D. His cooperation with other inventors.
26. What advantages does Ahn’s ARE Board have over other electronic whiteboards
A. It is smaller and lighter. B. It is more futuristic.
C. It is cheaper and more user-friendly. D. It is expensive.
27. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. How to Upgrade Your Classroom
B. An Inspirational Inventor Creates Motorized Whiteboard
C. Teenagers Can Make a Big Difference
D. ARE Board — Whiteboard’s Bright Future

People perform graceful moves, all while standing on a bamboo strip in the river. You may think it’s a scene from an art movie, but actually it is a form of intangible cultural heritage: bamboo drifting(独竹漂).
Bamboo drifting dated back to over 2,000 years ago in the Chishui River area of Guizhou. During the Qin Dynasty, the Bozhou district of Zunyi city was known for its high-quality nanmu(楠木). It was in great demand by the royal court more than 2,000 kilometers to the north. With no transportation along the Chishui River, people had to stand on one log(原木)to drift down the river. Later, local people began to compete along the way and the game of wood drifting was born. In the Qing Dynasty, wood drifting became bamboo drifting because of bamboo’s lower price.
Now, communities in Guizhou hold bamboo drifting competitions every year during Dragon Boat Festival. Due to the great strength and balance it takes for one to get the hang of this act, bamboo drifting was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list.
Yang Liu, 24, is an inheritor(继承人) of bamboo drifting. Yang said the most challenging part of bamboo drifting was keeping one’s balance. “I fell in the water several times when I was practising,” she said.
But the love for the ancient skill keeps Yang going. In the past 17 years, she has drifted all year round, in winter cold and summer heat.
Yang also produces new ideas when spreading the culture of bamboo drifting. For example, she connects dance with bamboo drifting to make it more graceful and wears hanfu when performing, creating a beautiful feel. In 2020, Yang registered on social media platforms and posted her videos. “I want to spread it to other countries so that more people around the world will like Chinese culture,” she told China Daily.
28. Why did bamboo drifting replace wood drifting
A. The bamboo was cheaper. B. The bamboo was more beautiful.
C. The bamboo was more convenient. D. The bamboo was much easier to control.
29. What does the underlined phrase “get the hang of” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Prepare. B. Change. C. Master. D. Improve.
30. What is the most difficult for bamboo drifting in Yang Liu’s opinion
A. Designing moves. B. Transporting goods.
C. Choosing bamboos. D. Keeping balance.
31. What can we infer about Yang Liu
A. She inherits bamboo drifting creatively. B. She learned bamboo drifting very easily.
C. She has become the leader of bamboo drifting. D. She began learning bamboo drifting at 17.

In a country where over 80% of residents live in public housing, a government commitment to sustainable(可持续的) urban design could have huge influence. And when it’s a tropical country like Singapore where convenience and air conditioning are a way of life, the impact could be greater still.
Promising 42,000 new homes across five residential districts, the eco-town of Tengah will be the 24th new settlement built by Singapore’s government since World War II. It is, however, the first with centralized cooling, automated trash collection and a car-free town center, with which environment lovers hope to offer a roadmap for reducing carbon emissions(排放) in the Southeast Asian city-state.
The development is named as “Forest Town” by officials, due to its abundant greenery and public gardens. Once home to brickmaking factories, and later used for military training, the 2.7-square-mile site has been reclaimed by a forest in recent years. A 328-foot-wide ecological “corridor” will be maintained through its center, providing safe passage to wildlife and connecting a water catchment area on one side to a nature reserve on the other.
The project has proven a new plan for urban planners supporting green design principles and “smart” technology, according to Chong Fook Loong, group director for research and planning at Singapore’s Housing and Development Board, the agency overseeing the country’s public housing. “Tengah is a new start,” he said in a video interview, explaining that roads and parking are being pushed beneath the town center. “We’re going for the ideal concept of separated traffic, with everything underground and then the ground level totally freed up for pedestrians — for people. So, it’s a very safe environment for all.”
“We want a town that allows walking and cycling in a very user-friendly manner,” he added, saying that cycling has “taken off” in Singapore in the “last three to five years especially”. The master plan will see the installation of electric vehicle charging stations.
32. What is special about the 24th new settlement
A. It can house 42,000 people. B. It will be well equipped.
C. It will be built by the government. D. It will be environmentally friendly.
33. Which of the following might be the design of the forest town
A. B.
C. D.
34. What can we learn from Chong Fook Loong’s words
A. A parking lot will put in the town center.
B. Passers-by and traffic will be in different levels.
C. Bikes will be able to fly in the near future.
D. All masters will install charging stations.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Ways to reduce carbon emissions B. A green road for Singapore
C. An eco “smart” city planning D. A smart electric vehicle technology

Four Ways to Improve Your Mental Health
Mental health is your overall psychological well-being. And while taking care of your mental health can mean seeking professional support and treatment, it also means adopting some new methods to improve your emotional health. 36 It can boost your mood and add to your overall enjoyment of life.
Tell yourself something positive. How you think about yourself can have a powerful effect on how you feel. When we think about our life negatively, we can end up viewing experiences that way. 37 For example, instead of saying “I’m such a loser”, try “I have done my best”.
Focus on one thing at the moment. Being mindful of the present moment allows us to let go of negative emotions from past experiences that weigh us down. Start by bringing awareness to routine activities, such as taking a shower, eating lunch, or walking home. Paying attention to the sounds, smells, or tastes of these experiences helps you focus. 38
Exercise. Exercise is a powerful antidote (良方) to stress or anxiety. Look for small ways to add activities to your day, like taking the stairs instead of the lift. To get the most benefit, aim for at least 30 minutes a day outdoors. 39 Plus, time in nature proves to be a stress reducer.
40 Knowing you are valued by others is important for helping you think more positively. Plus, being more trusting can increase your emotional well-being because as you get better at finding the positive aspects of other people, you become better at recognizing your own.
A. Open up to someone.
B. Do something for someone else.
C. Exposure to sunlight helps your body produce vitamin D.
D. Making changes will pay off in all aspects of your life.
E. Instead, practice using words that promote feelings of self-worth.
F. When your mind wanders, just bring it back to what you are doing.
G. Don’t wait until you’re in a crisis to make your mental health a priority.
