【原文】It’s good to see people live longer lives. But how we can help people who live longer live better has been a big challenge. Now, a number of businesses are offering services specifically designed for the elderly. One of them is TrueCall. TrueCall is a UK telephone communication service that can block unwanted telephone calls. Businessman Robert Smith has set the system in his mother’s home, since a group of people had stolen her life savings through phone calls a few months earlier. Another one called Red & Yellow Care is a health care service. According to the director Mike Hart, their staff is trained to be able to explain their service in a simple and clear way, and unafraid of repeating the information. All the training is to provide safer and friendlier service for the elderly. Then there is Safeway, a supermarket chain. One of the staff, Martin Bateman says that he and his co-workers now ask older customers more frequently if they need help at the checkouts. These customers may not know what to do with the self-checkout machines. All in all, the elderly are gaining increasing attention from the society. They’ll be living longer and better.

In the first half of the 20th century, weekend escapes in the United States often meant hopping a train to a nearby town, city, or country inn. Here are several new or restored routes that let you ditch your car for a weekend trip.
Route 1 Miami to West Palm Beach, Florida
Florida’s Brightline, the only privately funded inter-city train system in the U.S., restarted nearly hourly services from Miami to West Palm Beach (with a stop in Fort Lauderdale) in late 2021. The electric-and diesel-powered trains can go as fast as 79 miles per hour, meaning the journey from Miami Central station to West Palm takes just 75 minutes. Continuing service north to Orlando launches next year.
Route 2 San Francisco to Truckee, California
The full route of Amtrak’s California Zephyr—revived(恢复) in May after a pandemic (流行病) suspension—takes 51 hours to travel from the Bay Area to Chicago (or vice versa). But if you take the leg just from San Francisco to Truckee, California, a five-hour trip lands you in one of the most historic, scenic towns in the Lake Tahoe area.
Route 3 New York City to Burlington, Vermont
Revived in July 2022 the Ethan Alen Express takes just under eight hours to travel from New York City to Burlington, Vermont. It passes New York State’s Adirondack Mountains and Vermont’s Green Mountains on route to Burlington, the state capital and one of America’s hippest(时髦的) small cities.
Route 4 Washington, D. C., to Roanoke, Virginia
It’s about a five-hour train trip from Washington, D. C.’s Union Station to Roanoke, Virginia. In July, high demand led Amtrak to add a second daily train to and from the historic Blue Ridge Mountains city. This expanded Route 46, a shared service of Amtrak and the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA), resulted in a 28.9 percent increase in ridership for July over the previous month.
21. Which of the four routes takes the shortest time
A. Route 1. B. Route 2. C. Route 3. D. Route4.
22. What is special about Route 4 compared with the other routes
A. It takes the longest time. B. You can have two options in a day.
C. You can experience beautiful scenes. D. There are fewer passengers there.
23. What does Route 2 and Route 4 have in common
A. Passengers are growing quickly in both routes.
B. Both routes are crowded with tourists.
C. Both routes are revived just after the pandemic.
D. Passengers can enjoy historic scenes in both routes.
【答案】21. A 22. B 23. D

When a young physician appeared in a village to set up practice, she ran into a wall of distrust. Fourteen years on, the locals treat her as one of their own, Yang Feiyue reports.
Two pairs of old-fashioned black shoes with rugged cotton soles (鞋底) stand out among a pile of items, including awards certificates that exemplify Zhong Jing’s work in improving rural health over the past 14 years.
The shoes are by no means finely finished and point to the tough manual labor of a 90-year-old villager who touched Zhong’s soul and made her decide to put down roots in Longhe village, Longchang town, Qianxi-nan Bouyei and Miao autonomous prefecture in Guizhou province.
“I’ve never been able to get over how she must have struggled across several kilometers of rough mountain roads just to send me these shoes,” Zhong says.
The anecdote is one of many that tell of the bond between Zhong and the village’s 3,000 or so residents. Rain or shine, Zhong opens the door of her clinic in the village no later than 7: 30 am each day. The clinic is the only place where the villagers can see a doctor and have their ailments (疾病尤指慢性病) tended without trekking (艰苦跋涉) further afield.
Zhong, 39, knows every one of her patients and their conditions, so her diagnoses are done efficiently, with prescriptions that almost always seem to do the trick. When villages are on their work breaks, Zhong makes calls to some who have chronic (长期的) diseases, such as high blood pressure, and diabetes.
When Zhong settled down in Longhe in 2008, villagers’ worries of having nowhere to turn to in a medical emergency evaporated.
24. What’s the local villagers’ reaction when Zhong first appeared in the village
A. They relied on her treatment very much.
B. They did not have belief in her very much.
C. They just completely ignored her effort.
D. They treated her as one of their own.
25 Why does the author mention two pairs of old-fashioned shoes
A. To illustrate that Zhong lived a poor life.
B. To illustrate that Zhong walked a long way.
C. To illustrate Zhong’s simple lifestyle.
D. To illustrate the local’s appreciation for her.
26. Why are Zhong’s diagnoses almost efficient
A. Because she has advanced diagnose skills.
B. Because she has confidence in her medial knowledge.
C. Because she thoroughly knows her patients’ conditions.
D. Because the local patients have no other clinic to go.
27. What does the underlined word in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Disappeared. B. Declined. C. Established. D. Confirmed.
【答案】24. B 25. D 26. C 27. A
【解析】

【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段内容“The shoes are by no means finely finished and point to the tough manual labor of a 90-year-old villager who touched Zhong’s soul and made her decide to put down roots in Longhe village, Longchang town, Qianxi-nan Bouyei and Miao autonomous prefecture in Guizhou province.”(这些鞋的做工并不精致,说明了一位90岁的村民的艰苦体力劳动,这个村民触动了钟的灵魂,并决定在贵州省黔西南布依族苗族自治州龙场镇龙河村扎根。)和第四段内容““I’ve never been able to get over how she must have struggled across several kilometers of rough mountain roads just to send me these shoes,” Zhong says.”(钟说:“我从来没能忘记,她为了给我送鞋,必须艰难地穿过几公里崎岖的山路。”)
根据倒数第二段关键句“Zhong, 39, knows every one of her patients and their conditions, so her diagnoses are done efficiently, with prescriptions that almost always seem to do the trick.”(39岁的钟知道她的每一个病人和他们的病情,所以她的诊断是有效的,处方似乎总是有效的。)
故选A项。

The Regulation on Internet Popup Information Push Services, drafted by the Cyberspace Administration of China with two other departments, comes into effect on Friday. According to the new regulation, advertisements reaching users through app pushing services need to be regulated and should not violate users’ legal rights.
For long, pushed advertisements have been a headache for users of smartphones, tablets, computers or any electronic device with a screen. People watching a video on their smartphones might suddenly be bombar-ded with an advertisement persuading them to buy a particular body cream. While browsing news, an advertise-ment might pop up asking the user to rent a car.
On Sept 23, a woman in Chongqing nearly met with an accident when an advertisement popped up on the navigation screen of her electric car while driving. When she complained, the service representative of the car manufacturing company told her they had no clue how to disable such advertisements at the time of driving.
The Advertisement Law requires advertisers to make sure their advertisements do not interfere with the user’s convenience, and to enable users to shut down such advertisements with a single click. However, many advertisements make use of bugs to get around the rules. And in the Chongqing example, even if the driver could shut down the advertisement with one click, it would still pose a challenge to driving safety.
The new regulation makes it clear that local cyberspace administrations, telecommunication management departments and market regulation bureaus have the power and responsibility to enforce the law against illegal advertisements.
That will save victims the trouble of finding out who can help them strike down illegal advertisements. The responsible agencies must enforce the law and ensure those violating the law are punished.
By early September, there were more than 950 million domestic smartphone users. How to protect them from such advertisers is the responsibility of various levels of law enforcers.
28. How do smartphone users feel about pushed advertisements
A. Disappointed. B. Annoyed. C. Contradictory D. Reasonable.
29. What can we infer from the third paragraph
A. The car company is to blame for the illegal disturbance.
B. There was something wrong with the navigation system.
C. Who is to blame for the pushed advertisements is unclear.
D. The service representative of the car company pushed those ads.
30. What is the advantage of the new regulation
A. The new regulation has made the responsibility clear.
B. The new regulation will clear those pushed ads completely.
C. The new regulation will shut down those pushed ads directly.
D. The new regulation will save victims the trouble of punishment.
31. What might be the best title
A. Accident Almost Happened to Woman.
B. Regulation against Illegal App Ads Gets a Push.
C. Let’s Prevent Annoying Pushed Advertisements.
D. Illegal Ads App Successfully Banned Pushed Ads.
【答案】28. B 29. C 30. A 31. B

It’s your nightmare — sitting down on the bus or train only to discover that your phone battery has hit the red. How will you check those important emails or post that funny Tweet you just thought of
A simple solution might be to charge your phone overnight, so it’s ready to go when you are, but as it turns out, this might not be the best idea. Experts have warned that sleeping by a charging phone could in face be bad for us. According to David Gale, of Gale & Snowden, an eco-architecture firm, our nervous system operates at very low voltages (电压).
“Our brains use electricity to send messages to our muscles. For some people, the man-made alternating current that powers our phones can interfere with these processes,” he said. For this reason, some people may find it difficult to sleep near a charging phone or other electronics, reports MailOnline.
It’s also important not place a charging phone on your bed or under your pillows when you sleep, as this can cause a major fire risk. This is because the batter heats up while the phone is charging and sometimes it can get so hot that it catches fire.
According to Dominic Littlewood, a consumer affairs expert, you should instead try placing your phone in a plate when it charges. “That way, even if your phone gets hot, at least the plate won’t catch fire. It’s going to protect you a little bit,” he said.
However, there aren’t only risks to you that need to be considered. Charging your phone overnight can also cause damage to your phone. Experts at PC Advisor don’t recommend charging your battery to 100 percent. “It won’t fatally damage the battery if you do a full recharge. But constantly doing a full recharge will shorten the battery’s lifespan.”
32. What does the nightmare in the first paragraph refer to
A. Finding your phone nearly dying when travelling.
B. Your phone will dangerously hit the red line.
C. Your important emails can’t be checked in time.
D. You have to post an emergent post in Tweeter.
33. How does sleeping by a charging phone affect our brain
A. It will make us feel very depressed and anxious.
B. It may disturb our brain’s sending messages to muscles.
C. It will alternate current that power our brains greatly,
D. It will help us stay refreshed and alarmed in the night.
34. What is the advantage of placing your phone in a plate when charging
A. It will help the owner of the phone fall asleep easily.
B. It will help protect the phones when you are charging it.
C. It will protect you from getting hurt in the might.
D. It will prevent fire from breaking out when charging.
35. What do you know from the last paragraph
A. Charging your phone overnight doesn’t make sense in the long term.
B. Charging your phone will destroy your phone battery in a short time.
C. Constantly charging your phone overnight will shorten the battery’s lifespan.
D. Constantly doing a full recharge will fatally damage your phone’s battery.

Maggie and Alex live in a tall building in a neighborhood in the center of the city. There are no trees near their building, but they are happy in their home and it is close to their jobs.
In the part of the city where they live, there is not much fresh food to buy. The stores only have processed foods in packages. Maggie and Alex and all the other people in the building have to eat food that they buy in boxes and plastic containers.
This makes so much garbage that no one knows where to put it. While they wait for Fridays, when the city collects the garbage, all the neighbors put their trash into bags and sometimes leave it in the hallway or on the big, sunny roof. The whole building looks terrible. No one can spend time playing on the roof because it is full of trash.
One day, Maggie and Alex decide to make a change. They go up to the roof and separate all the recycla-ble garbage, like cardboard, plastic bottles, glass, and aluminum cans. Then they take all of the garbage down to the street for the garbage collectors.
But they do not carry down the plastic bottles! They cut off the tops and use them as pots to plant tomatoes and carrots. They plant herbs, too.

They enjoy the sun and help take care of the plants in the garden. They all cooperate, and by working together, they soon have a big, beautiful vegetable garden!
Paragraph 2:
Now the roof looks beautiful like a garden. They spend time in their community garden, enjoy the sun, and create much less garbage. In fact, they even save money because they do not have to buy so much packaged food. The garden is a real success, and the building in the center of the city is a much nicer place to live because of it.

25. Why does the author mention two pairs of old-fashioned shoes
A To illustrate that Zhong lived a poor life.
D. Confirmed.
C
B There was something wrong with the navigation system.
D
It’s also important not place a charging phone on your bed or under your pillows when you sleep as this can cause a major fire risk.
However there aren’t only risks to you that need to be considered.
