On the hottest day ever recorded in the UK to date last week, one old couple set out to take a relative to hospital. On their return from hospital, the husband didn’t feel well. He managed to pull the car over to a stop on the hard shoulder before he passed out, leaving his wife fearing for his life as he had a heart condition.
The woman, 86 checked her phone to call for help, only to her disappointment to find the battery had died. Hopeless for assistance, she got out of the car and began waving wildly at passers-by for help. For a while it seemed like no one was going to come to their rescue and then, almost out of nowhere, Shaun Smith approached them.
The 31-year-old from Leighton Buzzard had spotted the woman trying to flag someone down and decided to see what was wrong. He pulled over behind their car. Knowing what had happened to the old man, Shaun moved him into his car so he could use the air conditioning to cool him down. He then called for an ambulance (救护车), but emergency services told him it would take up to four hours to get to them.
Knowing this could be dangerous for the man, he offered to drive the old couple home and the ambulance would meet them there. Weekends area time to relax and a chance to leave your work he hind and have some me time instead. But working from home has tended to blur (模糊) the lines between people’s personal space and workspace and many people are feeling stressed by the middle of the week. That’s why accepting the Swedish tradition of lill rdag or “little Saturday” might be the answer to getting through the week.
This midweek celebration isn’t a vacation day; it’s more like a pause or break after work on Wednesdays to do something like enjoying a meal with your family or just watching an interesting TV show. “You let yourself enjoy something,” said Hanna Hedenius living in Stockholm. “You can see people celebrating on social media. On Instagram, you’ll see a picture of a glass of wine and some cheese, or ice cream, on Wednesday because people have a reason just to do it.”
There’s a national radio show that plays popular music on Wednesdays and there’s a podcast with topics that connect to the celebration of “little Saturday”. While not every Swede practices lill rdag, most do see the pause as a way of getting through the workweek.
Self-care is important for people’s body and mind. Paula Gill Lopez, a professor of Fairfield University in Connecticut, told Everyday Health that the need for self-care is conspicuous. “We have an epidemic of anxiety and depression,” she said. “Everybody feels it.”
Self-care and wellness activities can range from eating healthy foods, to exercising, to taking time to relax. Many people don’t make time to care for themselves and that’s where lill rdag comes in.
“Something like lill rdag can be quite wise in helping people relax,” said Constanze Leineweber, associate professor at the Stress Research Institute of Stockholm University. “You can become encouraged with smaller goals within the week which you can reach and get a reward for.”
So if you’re feeling stressed, have a happy lill rdag!

B. They want more time to work from home.
C. They are easily affected by Swedish culture.
D. They want chances to share their workspace.

A new report from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Zoological Society of London found Earth’s biodiversity is decreasing through years of data on thousands of wildlife populations across the world.
According to the data, animal populations across the world decreased by an average of 69% between 1970 and 2018.
Experts say the rapid loss of biodiversity is a serious and worrying sign of what’s to come for the natural world. “The message is clear and the lights are flashing red.” said WWF International Director General Marco Lambertini.
Many scientists believe that the main cause of biodiversity loss island-use changes driven by human activities such as the development of basic facilities, energy production and deforestation.
But the report suggests that climate change, which has had a wide impact on plant and animal species globally, could become the leading cause of biodiversity loss if rising temperatures aren’t limited to 1.5℃.
Lambertini said biodiversity loss and climate change are already responsible for a series of problems for humans, including death and homelessness from extreme weather, a lack of food and water and an increase in the spread of specific diseases.
But the terrible news comes with signs of hope: Experts say there are possible solutions to the loss of biodiversity. Solutions range from protecting forests to establishing a cross-border trade system in Africa, the report said.
WWF chief scientist Rebecca Shaw said that humans have the opportunity to change how they do things to benefit nature. “Little things that we can do every day can change the direction of these population declines,” said Shaw.
12. What does the new report focus on according to the first paragraph
A. Climate change. B. Forest protection.
C. Earth’s biodiversity. D. Wildlife habitat.
13. What maybe the main cause of biodiversity loss currently
A. The spread of specific diseases. B. Climate change on Earth.
C. A lack of food and water. D. Human impacts on land.
14. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs
A. It’s unnecessary for humans to continue benefiting nature.
B. There is something humans can do to stop biodiversity loss.
C. It’s impossible for humans to stop the decline of biodiversity.
D. There is no need for humans to worry about biodiversity loss.

It was an early cold winter morning. Michele was sleeping soundly when the phone rang in the living room. She rolled over and glanced at the clock on the wall it was already nine o’clock. Every weekend morning, her mother had to work part-time in the cafe. Although Michele was still sleepy, she knew she had to get up. After all, she didn’t expect her brother Mike, who was sleeping like a log, to hear the phone. She quietly went over to the living room. When she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warmhearted greetings, “Good morning, my dear!” Knowing the voice from her father, Michele was immediately surrounded by a sense of joy and the sleepiness swept away.
Michele’s father was a seaman, who rarely came back. Working on the sea was really hard. Born in a not-rich family, Michele and Mike felt the stress of life but they were happy to enjoy the way they were living. At school, they were the best students throughout the academic career and actively took part in school activities. They became the pride of the school and the envy of the students.
“Good morning, Dad, what’s up ” Michele said in an easy tone. “I have been very nice recently, my baby. Today is your mother’s birthday, and I have ordered her a cake online and it should come to the house in one and half an hour. Do remember to take the cake.”
Hearing her father’s words, Michele felt a little ashamed. How she could forget Mum’s birthday! She took a glance at the dirty clothes piled on the sofa and the city floor that hadn’t been mopped (拖地) for a few days — There was two hours before her mother came back. She calculated they had enough time to prepare a surprise for Mum.
Thinking of this, she felt full of excitement. “Well, Dad, now I'm going to wake Mike up. We will give Mum a surprise!”
Michele hung up the phone with Dad, and hurriedly went to Mike’s room to share him her Big Cleaning plan. After listening to Joan, Mike readily accepted her idea.
The big cleaning plan began. Michele collected the clothes from sofa and began to do the laundry. Meanwhile, Mike was busy mopping the floor back and forth with all his strength, really aware of what hard work his Mum had at home!

So if you’re feeling stressed have a happy lill rdag!
8. Why may people use lill rdag as a way to get through a week
