It is fun to watch ducks swim. Baby ducks swim behind their mother. They move in a straight line. The babies ride on their mom's waves （水波）. It saves them energy. Energy is the ability to do work. It can take many forms.
But why does swimming like this help the baby ducks save energy For a long time, scientists did not know why. So, a team of scientists got together. They work in Scotland and China. They wanted to find the answer. In October 2021, the team announced the results.
Thanks to mom, baby ducks can save energy while swimming, if they're in the sweet position. Zhiming Yuan worked on this research. Yuan is a naval architect（造船工程师）. That means he designs ships. He works at the University of Strathclyde. It is in Scotland. Yuan's team wanted to study a duck's waves. So, they made computer simulations （模仿）of them. A computer simulation models something in the real world. The team studied the simulations. They found that some baby ducks have an easier time swimming. They just need to be in the right position.
It is harder for a baby duck to swim by themselves. When it does, it makes waves behind it. This forms a wake behind the baby duck. A wake is a way of waves that something leaves behind. The waves behind the baby duck run out of some energy. This is called wave drag. It goes against the baby ducks' forward direction. It pulls them backward.
But something happens when baby ducks swim in their mom's wake. The wave drag is reversed （相反的）. The baby ducks feel a push. This makes it easier for them to swim. But they have to be in the right position behind mom. When baby ducks line up behind their mom, they share with each other. Each baby duck in the line passes its waves backward. That way, each baby duck gets a free ride.

First, we are supposed to be careful when making friends online and should not talk to strangers. Second, remember never to go swimming alone in the river or lake. Besides, in order to eat healthily and safely, we'd better eat less junk food and not eat food that goes bad, for they will do harm to our health. At last, when travelling outside, take care of our personal things and call the police for help in time if we are in danger.
