By age 18, many teens are felig a combination of excitement and fear about the future. They tend to be very focused on their friends, social lives, and future. There are a lot of decisions to be made about life after graduation, including potential careers, college plans, or military service paths. Many 18- year- olds spend a lot of time into thinking about what type of life they want once they’re on their own, but they also may just be enjoying the present.
The day your child turns 18, they become a legal adult in most states. This means that they can vote, sign contracts, and join the military. By law, you are no longer required to support them and they are considered fully responsible for their own actions. And while you likely want to continue to help support your child to some level, you are now limited in what you can do. For example, you cannot call up their college professor to see how they are doing in their Calculus class—they have to do that themselves.
Parenting your 18- year- old can be a tricky balance of guiding them towards autonomy(自主) while also keeping them safe and supported. “Teenagers can be all gas and no brakes(刹车), and that’s scary, which is why it’s so important to keep an open, honest dialogue with them,” says Aliza Pressman, PhD, a professor of peditrics and psychologist at Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital in New York City.
Teens who have plenty of life skills often feel ready to move out of the home and begin the next chapter. But others may feel less than ready for life as an adult. Those who are less mature (成熟的) or experience self- doubt may step back a bit as they think about entering the next stage of their lives.
4. What does paragraph 1 mainly talk about
A. Characteristics of 18-year -olds. B. Confusion of 18- year- olds.
C. Consideration of18-year- olds. D. Decisions of 18- year- olds.
5. Why are you limited in your doings with your 18- year- -old
A. They ask their professor to stop you. B. They have to manage themselves.
C. They no longer need your support. D. They become a legal adult now.
6. What does Aliza Pressman say about Parenting your 18- year - old
A. It’s scary to let them drive with full gas but no brakes.
B. It’s hard to balance their autonomy and your guidance.
C. It’s important to have a frank conversation with them.
D It’s necessary to let them go without any of your support.
7. What can we learn about Teens equipped with enough life skills
A. They hesitate to begin the new chapter. B. They feel both excitement and fear.
C. They are just enjoying the present life. D. They get ready to meet the adult life.
【答案】4 A 5. B 6. C 7. D

【4题详解】
段落大意题。根据第一段前两句话“By age 18, many teens are felig a combination of excitement and fear about the future. They tend to be very focused on their friends, social lives, and future...Many 18- year- olds spend a lot of time into thinking about what type of life they want once they’re on their own, but they also may just be enjoying the present.(在18岁的时候,许多青少年对未来既兴奋又恐惧。他们往往非常关注自己的朋友、社交生活和未来……许多18岁的年轻人花很多时间考虑他们独立后想要什么样的生活,但他们也可能只是在享受现在。)”可知,第一段主要讲述了18岁青少年的特点。故选A。

When she was a child, Yue- Sai Kan was told by her father that she should always aim to be the first to walk on the moon because no one remembers the second. What her father said has been a driving inspiration over the years for her to become an Emmy—winning television producer, bestselling author and successful entrepreneur.
Her new book Bea Pioneer, which is the tenth she has penned and her first Chinese- language autobiography (自传), came out after three years in the making. It was also inspired in part by her father’s words.
“Actually many people have asked me to write an autobiography. I have been asked so many times already but I always felt that it was not the right time for me to sit down and give thanks for my life and also I did not think my life was so exciting anyway,” says Kan.
However, her publisher thought otherwise, telling her that since she lived through interesting times in China, and was both witness and participant (见证者与参与者), she should write the book as a historical record.
“All the things I have done—my successes and my failures—can be a good example to young people in particular. I think that’ s the main reason why I wrote the book,” says Kan, adding that the COVID-19 lockdown gave her the unexpected opportunity to do some thinking about her life.
In the book, Kan included a lot of pictures taken from her early life. By scanning a QR code (扫二维码), readers are also able to see video clips from the period. “I am a television person, so I thought these videos were a great way to connect with my readers,” she says.
When writing an autobiography, the biggest challenges are not only how to present one’s life, but also remembering it in the first place. To help with reorganising her story, Kan asked the many friends and workmates she made over the years to write down their memories of her from earlier times. So besides featuring Kan’s own words, the new books are also filled with those of her friends, which gave Kan a new understanding of herself.
8. What can we infer from the first two paragraphs
A. Kan once walked on the moon. B. Kan’s father’s words deeply influenced her.
C. Kan’s father was a great author. D. Kan’s autobiography was written in English.
9. What mainly drove Kan to write her autobiography
A. To give thanks for her life. B. To be in honor of her father.
C. To share China stories well. D. To set the youth an example.
10. What challenged Kan most while writing her autobiography
A. How to gain a new understanding. B. How to collect memories from others.
C. How to connect with her readers. D. How to remember and present her life.
11. Which of the following can best describe Kan
A. Generous and optimistic. B. Helpful and patient.
C. Modest and inspirational. D. Kind and humorous.

A new study shows that a positive atitude about ageing can help recover mild memory loss. People with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are 30 per cent more likely to make symptoms (症状) disappear if they think positively about ageing, according to a study carried out by the Yale School of Public Health. The study was conducted over twelve years and involved 1,716 participants aged 65 and above.
MCI is usually considered a one-way process, but according to Professor Becca Levy, lead author of the study, that’s not the case at all, ”Most people assume there is no recovery from MCI, but in fact half of those who have it do recover.”
Mild cognitive impairment is a condition which causes memory loss and difficulty in thinking clearly. Symptoms might include forgetting events, or often losing things. Other more physical symptoms such as a loss of smell or spatial perception have also been connected with MCI.
It is mostly found in people over 60,and often leads to Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. The study was conducted over a twelve - year period between 2008 - 2020, with seven data collection waves performed every two years.
Results showed that those who came to the study with MCI were 30 per cent more likely to make a full recovery if they were upbeat about ageing. They were also likely to recover two years faster than those with more negative age beliefs (such as “The older I get, the more useless I feel”). Those who came to the study without MCI were also far less likely to develop it if they felt more age - positive, no matter of what their physical health or age is.
Factors (因素) such as age, race and gender have previously been examined for connections with recovery, but this is the first study to look at cultural factors — in this case, beliefs about ageing.
While the study definitely provided positive results, it’s still not known exactly why. “A limitation is that we did not examine the mechanism of positive age beliefs in cognitive (认知) recovery”, says Levy.
Given how well this research has gone, hopefully future studies will show the “why”, as well as looking at other cultural factors.
12. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The introduction of MCI. B. The causes of MCI.
C. The treatment of MCI. D. The recovery of MCI.
13. What does the underlined word “upbeat” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Careful. B. Serious.
C. Worried. D. Positive.
14. What is the most special about this new study
A. The thought of cultural aspects. B. The length of study time.
C. The way of collecting data. D. The age of participants.
15. What is probably its future study direction
A. The reason why physical symptoms of MCI will appear.
B. The way that positive age beliefs affect recovery of MCL.
C. The reason why positive age beliefs produce good results.
D. The factors that contribute to cognitive recovery of MCL.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. A 15. C
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述一项新的研究表明,对衰老的积极态度可以帮助恢复轻度记忆丧失。
【12题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“Mild cognitive impairment is a condition which causes memory loss and difficulty in thinking clearly. Symptoms might include forgetting events, or often losing things. Other more physical symptoms such as a loss of smell or spatial perception have also been connected with MCI.(轻度认知障碍是一种导致记忆力丧失和难以清晰思考的情况。症状可能包括遗忘事件,或经常丢失东西。其他更多的身体症状,如嗅觉或空间感知丧失,也与MCI有关)”可知,本段主要介绍了什么是轻度认知障碍(MCI)以及它的症状。故选A。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段第二句话“They were also likely to recover two years faster than those with more negative age beliefs (such as “The older I get, the more useless I feel”). (他们的康复速度也可能比那些年龄观念更消极的人快两年(比如“我年纪越大,就越觉得自己没用”))”可知,年龄观念更消极的人康复速度慢,也就是说,对衰老持乐观态度的人完全康复的可能性会高出30%。所以划线单词的意思为“积极的,乐观的”。故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第三段“Factors (因素) such as age, race and gender have previously been examined for connections with recovery, but this is the first study to look at cultural factors — in this case, beliefs about ageing.(以前曾研究过年龄、种族和性别等因素与康复的关系,但这是第一项研究文化因素的研究,在这种情况下,是对衰老的信念)”可知,这项研究的特别之处在于它考虑了文化因素。故选A。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段第一句话“While the study definitely provided positive results, it’s still not known exactly why. (尽管这项研究确实提供了积极的结果,但仍不清楚确切的原因)”和最后一段“Given how well this research has gone, hopefully future studies will show the “why”, as well as looking at other cultural factors.(考虑到这项研究的进展情况,希望未来的研究能显示“为什么”,以及其他文化因素)”可推知,这项研究的未来方向是积极的年龄信念产生良好结果的原因。故选C。

Daddy had passed away the previous year, so Leonard, my grown brother was always quick to help anytime Mama called. This time my brother was asked to tear down an old shed. My sister Angie and I, with no shoes on, dogged his every step, trying to help, though reminded and warned of rusty nails (生锈的钉子) by mama.
Suddenly, Angie started screaming and Mama came running. Sure enough, she had stepped on a rusty nail. Mama examined my sister’s foot while Leonard looked at mine. On my way to see about Angie, I’d stepped on a nail, too. The grownups agreed we needed tetanus (破伤风疫苗) shots.
I hated shots, so I whispered to mama. “I don’t want to get a shot”. My mama directed my sister’s attention to other place, and then cupped a hand around my ear. “Arlene, you and Angie have to get tetanus shots. I need you to be brave so she won’t be too scared. If you take the shot without crying or screaming, maybe she won’t do that as well when her turn comes.
Loving and respecting my mother and wanting to relieve her worry, I made up my mind to get that awful shot without crying a single tear.
At the hospital, a nurse walked in with a syringe (注射器). Angie’s big blue eyes studied the nurse’s every move. The needle hurt so much that I wanted to scream. Mama looked down at my sister and then back at me. I knew she was reminding me to be brave. I didn’t cry or scream. .
Then it was my sister’s turn. Mama lowered my sister onto the table. “See there, Angie. Your big sister wasn’t afraid to get a shot. Arlene, tell Angie it didn’t hurt at all.”

【答案】参考范文
Mama waited for me to tell Angie that getting the shot wouldn’t hurt. I wanted to do what she told me. But if I told Angie it wouldn’t hurt, I thought, she wouldn’t ever believe me again. So, I cupped my hands around my mouth and yelled, “DON’T LET THEM DO IT TO YOU, ANGIE!”. Hearing this, my sister screamed, jumped off the table, and took off down along hall. Surprised, then angry, my mum hurriedly ran after her. Eventually, Leonard, Mama, and two nurses all got involved and worn out when a doctor gave her the shot.
On the way home, Angie buried her face in Mama’s chest, crying. I tried to hold my tears back. I didn’t want to cry because of my hurting armor my hurting foot. I wanted to cry because I’d made things harder on Mama. Suddenly, a tiny finger gently touched my shoulder. I looked up and saw Angie’s sweet face. A tears lid down her cheek as she reached out her hand. I took it in mine, holding like this all the way. Seeing this, my mama and Leonard both smiled.

D. It’s necessary to let them go without any of your support.
7 What can we learn about Teens equipped with enough life skills
A. They hesitate to begin the new chapter. B. They feel both excitement and fear.
C. They are just enjoying the present life. D. They get ready to meet the adult life.
C
