22 New Recruits Wanted
一、请根据两个提示句进行故事续写,150词左右。
“New Recruits Wanted.” The sign caught my eye and revived my dream of becoming a firefighter. But I constantly reminded myself that I was near sixty, not the picture-book image of a firefighter. Forty years in construction had exhausted my body, but the decades spent as a Level 3 First Aid Attendant had built a certain “rescue mentality” that gave me the confidence to visit the fire hall and fill out an application.
A few years earlier, I had assisted at a roadside motor-vehicle accident. I saved the driver who was in cardiac arrest (心搏停止) by starting her heart with CPR. This powerful experience changed my appreciation for first responders (现场急救员) and I believe that those of us can need to step forward.
My dream of becoming a firefighter began when I watched the television show Rescue 8, filmed with the cooperation of the Los Angeles Fire Department. Each week, the two specialists on the Rescue 8 truck performed all manner of daring rescues and medical calls, as well as attended fires with the regular crews. At an early age, I knew what I wanted to do, and the theme song from that show stuck in my head for years.
Unfortunately, life doesn’t always follow the dreams of young boys. A career in construction, a family to raise, and many other factors got in the way of volunteering with the local fire department. Now, in anticipation of retirement, my wife and I had just relocated to a village. I had time to give and I knew I could contribute. I filled out the application and introduced myself to the Chief.
To my delight, I was accepted for training. Tough as it was,I joined in it. There were five of us in that recruit class. Three dropped out, one by one. Two of us made it through the training and became firefighters. I’m not sure if my maturity gave me the power required to hang in there when younger guys were dropping out.But I almost quit.I remember that day when we were practicing rescue in a darkened structure, crawling around with sixty pounds of gear on our backs and searching for victims in the dark, my poor old knees screaming and my back aching, I wasn’t sure I had the right stuff to complete my training. I was ready to give up and let the younger guys do it.
When I got home from practice, some friends were over and one of them changed my decision. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ It’s been almost ten years since I walked into the fire hall in anxiety. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________

New Recruits Wanted
“New Recruits Wanted.” The sign caught my eye and revived my dream of becoming a firefighter. But, just as quickly, I reminded myself that I was getting close to sixty and was probably not the picture-book image of a firefighter. Forty yearsin constructionhad taken its toll on my body, but the decades spent as a Level 3 First Aid Attendant had built a certain “rescue mentality” in me that gave me the confidence to visit the fire hall and fill out an application.
A few years earlier, on my way to work, I had assisted at a roadside motor-vehicle accident. It was a head-on collision with one vehicle submerged in a water-filled ditch. I helped a police officer rescue the driver, but she was in cardiac arrest. I was able to start her heart with CPR and save her life. This powerful experience forever changed my appreciation for first responders and the role they play. And though I understand that not everyone can do this kind of work, I believe that those of us who can need to step forward.
My dream of becoming a firefighter began when I watched the television show Rescue 8, filmed with the cooperation of the Los Angeles Fire Department. At an early age, I knew what I wanted to do, and the theme song from that show stuck in my head for years.
Unfortunately, life doesn’t always follow the dreams of young boys. A career in construction, a family to raise, and many other factors got in the way of volunteering with the local fire department when I was younger. Now, in anticipation of retirement, my wife and I had just relocated to a beautiful village on a lake about four hours north of Seattle, Washington. I was new in town; I had time to give; I knew I could contribute; I filled out the application and introduced myself to the Chief.
To my delight, I was accepted for training. Yes, I was the oldest recruit. Yes, it was tough. There were five of us in that recruit class. Two of us made it through the training and became firefighters. Three dropped out, one by one, over the weeks of training required.
I almost quit. I remember that day. We were practicing rescue in a darkened structure. We were crawling around with sixty pounds of gear on our backs, searching for victims in the dark. Afterwards, my poor old knees were screaming, my back was aching. I was ready to give up and let the younger guys do it.
When I got home from practice, some friends were over. I cleaned up and was going to let everyone know that I couldn’t do it anymore. A friend gifted me a book, a beautifully illustrated book of firefighters in action. It was signed by the author with a personalized message of inspiration, encouraging me to follow my dream. As I leafed through the pages with tears in my eyes, I marvelled at the courage and dedication of these brave individuals. It gave me the inspiration and strength to carry on. I knew then that my age didn’t matter. What mattered was my attitude and perseverance.
Over the next few weeks, the training continued to be intense, but I never lost focus again. Finally, I was certified as a firefighter. When the tones went off and we responded with lights and siren, there was a song playing in my head. The theme song from Rescue 8 was playing in my head when we responded to calls. It never went away, giving me courage.
I am currently a trainer with the department. I certify drivers to drive fire apparatus and operate fire pumps. The theme song from Rescue 8 plays in my head every time I drive with lights and siren. I found a place where I fit in with the department despite my age. At a time when most of my friends are retiring, I have found a new career that I love.
My proudest moment came in 2014, when my peers voted me Firefighter of the Year. It was not a gift to the old guy. It was in recognition for the hard work I had put into building our department.
It’s been almost ten years since I walked into the fire hall in trepidation, worried and wondering if I was being foolish. Here I am, rapidly approaching seventy, and I now know that you are never too old to redefine your life; never too old to take on new challenges; never too old to follow your dreams. I am proud to drive the rescue truck to the scene. Yes, with the Rescue 8 theme song playing in my head. And I am very proud to teach the next generation of firefighters the skills they will need to keep our village safe and save lives. Their decision to become a first responder will be one of the most challenging but rewarding decisions they will ever make.
