It is said that traditional Chinese brush painting has developed over a period of more than six thousand years.Its growth has showed the changes of time.
During the 1st century,Chinese brush paintings mainly showed religious themes with the introduction of Buddhism1 to China and the building of temples.However,the subject2 later expanded beyond3 religious themes.For example, paintings of historical characters and stories of everyday life became extremely popular.
By the 4th century,this particular type of painting had already established4 itself as an independent form of expression.It then gradually developed into two separate styles including a genre5 commonly found in Chinese brush painting.A great many artists in the 9th century painted in this genre and their subjects included a rich variety of flowers,fruits,birds,insects,and fish.Since the turn of the 20th century,painters have often mixed several colours on one brush or mixed their colours with black inks,which is similar to the Western painting skill.As a result,they have obtained more natural and richly varied colours.
Chinese painting is also closely related to the art of fine handwriting called calligraphy6.Chinese painters use black ink to produce different tones and a brush to make many kinds of lines.Even when they added colours,the ink drawing remained the basic of the design.In judging paintings,the Chinese paid more attention to the brushstrokes7 than to the subject matter.Chinese painting,also known as the traditional national painting,one of the traditional fine paintings with a long history,has its unique8 and independent system in the world’s fine arts field.
