Trash and garbage are other words for waste. In San Francisco, they are also words for art. A local recycling (回收) company, called Recology, created a program to give artists the opportunity to reuse unwanted objects. Artists are paid to work for four months on changing things like old tires and toys.
Ma Li, one of the artists at the center, is working on a project that includes plastic bottles and cloth. She is turning them into sculptures (雕塑). She says she learned recycling from her parents while growing up in China in the 1980s.

The question about the history of cacao(可可) has long interested researchers who wonder how and why it became so important to ancient Mesoamerican civilizations such as the Maya and Aztecs. Archaeological(考古学的) evidence once pointed to the first use of cacao in Mesoamerica about 3,900 years ago. Traditionally, archaeologists have assumed that Mesoamericans were the first not just to use cacao, but to grow it. Recently, researchers at the University of British Columbia have got a new finding that humans started to grow cacao trees and consume cacao in South America around 5,300 years ago.
In the hunt for the origins of human planted cacao , the researchers went to an ancient village in the highlands of southeastern Ecuador. Only a small area of the village was decayed after such a long period, which struck researchers as surprising. Consequently, they were able to find much evidence of the use of cacao at the Santa Ana-La Florida archaeological site.
The researchers found extremely small pieces from the cacao tree in the remains of containers and other objects, as well as genetic material from the tree. They also identified a substance found in the cacao tree but not in its wild relatives. This suggests that humans grew the tree for food purposes, especially drinks. Michael Blake, an archaeology professor who helped lead the study, said, “The remains with cacao on them say how people used the substance at the time. They clearly drank it.”
There is no established history of ancient populations in South or Central America using cacao to make chocolate the way people do now, the researchers reported. The populations in the upper Amazon area today still use cacao to make special drinks. Evidence suggests cacao planting moved into Central America and Mexico about 4,000 years ago. ”As for cacao’s going north to Central America and more areas, it was a long journey related to trade and many others,” said Blake.
8. What did the new discovery find about cacao
A. It came into use much earlier than thought before.
B. It was planted in Central America at the beginning.
C. Ancient populations used it as toady’s people do.
D. Mesoamerican civilizations were affected by it greatly.
9. What does the underlined word ”decayed“ in paragraph 2 mean
A. preserved B. explored C. valued D. destroyed
10. How did the researchers find out cacao’s original use
A. By examining the storage method of cacao at the site.
B. By collecting genetic material from cacao trees.
C. By analyzing objects on which cacao was found.
D. By comparing cacao trees with their wild relatives.
11. What might be talked about in the following paragraph
A. The change of cacao’s use. B. The spread of cacao.
C. The way of making chocolate. D. The trade in cacao.
D
Around 7,000 B.C. (during the Neolithic period), some hunters and gatherers began to rely chiefly on agriculture for their life. Indeed, agriculture itself evolved over the course of time and Neolithic peoples had long known how to grow crops. The real transformation of human life occurred when huge numbers of people began to rely primarily and permanently on the grain they grew and the animals they domesticated.
Agriculture made possible a more stable and secure life. With it Neolithic peoples developed, starting an energetic, creative time. They were responsible for many fundamental inventions and innovations that the modern world takes for granted. First is systematic agriculture – the reliance of Neolithic peoples on agriculture as their primary, not merely additional, source of food.
Thus they developed the primary economic activity of the entire ancient world and the basis of all modern life. With the settled routine of Neolithic farmers came the evolution of towns and eventually cities. Neolithic farmers usually raised more food than they could consume, and their surpluses permitted larger, healthier populations. Population growth in turn created an even greater reliance on settled farming, as only systematic agriculture could sustain the increased numbers of people. Since surpluses of food could also be traded for other goods, the Neolithic time witnessed the beginnings of large-scale exchange of goods. With the increasing complexity of Neolithic societies, writing emerged with the need to keep records and later by the urge to record experiences, learning, and beliefs.
The change to settled life also had a deep impact on the family. The shared needs and pressures that encourage extended-family ties are less urgent in settled than in nomadic (游牧的) societies. Ties to the extended family weakened. In towns and cities, the nuclear family was more dependent on its immediate neighbors than on distant relatives.
12. The passage talks mainly about ____________.
A why many human societies depend on agriculture
B. what changes agriculture brought to human life
C. how Neolithic peoples discovered agriculture
D. why the first agricultural societies failed
13. With agriculture, Neolithic people no longer needed to ____________.
A. move from one place to another
B. exchange goods with others
C. domesticate wild animals
D. worry about their safety
14. “Their surpluses” (in paragraph 3) refer to ____________.
A. the amount of food they had to consume
B. the more food they produced than needed
C. the extent to which they relied on agriculture
D. the increase in population agriculture brought about
15. According to the passage, how did the shift to agricultural societies impact people’s family
A. Family members began to work together to raise food
B. Immediate neighbors often became family members
C. The extended family became less important
D. The nuclear family became self-sufficient

It was Tamika’s turn to tell her class where she went this summer. She stood up proudly.
“This summer I went to Bradley,” Tamika announced. “They have a big market there. My mom bought a painting. and I got second-hand inline skates. We had a great time there.”
“That’s not a trip,” Jeremy whispered loudly to his partner. “It’s only half an hour from here. My dad and I often go to Bradley to buy tools for his repair shop.”
“Jeremy, no interrupting,” said Miss Snowden, their teacher. “And Bradley has a fine market. I'm glad that Tamika can tell us about it. Go ahead, Tamika.” Miss Snowden smiled warmly at her, encouraging her to continue.
But Tamika didn’t feel proud of her family’s trip to Bradley any more and she just felt embarrassed. Tamika dropped her head and said in a low voice that she was finished, and then hurried back to her desk. She hoped that the other kids didn’t notice her face turning red.
Tamika listened as Peter talked about his cruise to Jamaica. She heard about Mary’s trip across the Atlantic to Ireland. She heard about John’s horseback ride through the Grand Canyon. It seemed as if everyone but her had taken a big trip over the summer. “I never get to go anywhere.” Tamika thought to herself. A sense of sadness clouded her the whole day.
After school, things got worse. One of the wheels on Tamika’s skates came loose. Now she couldn’t even skate. Sitting on the sidewalk, Tamika tried to fix her wheel but did not know how. Then Miss Snowden happened to pass by. She walked up with a smile on her face, asking. “You look unhappy, Tamika. Why are you sitting here ” Tamika lowered her head, tears building up inside her eyes. “Want to talk about it ” Miss Snowden asked kindly. Tamika nodded, trying to avoid Miss Snowden’s eyes. Bending down, Miss Snowden said in a whisper: “You know, Tamika, we don’t always have to travel far to learn anything.” Tamika looked up and seemed to understand what Miss Snowden meant.

A It came into use much earlier than thought before.

【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段话“The researchers found extremely small pieces from the cacao tree in the remains of containers and other objects, as well as genetic material from the tree. They clearly drank it.”(研究人员在容器和其他物品的残骸以及可可树的遗传物质中发现了非常小的可可树碎片。

A. why many human societies depend on agriculture
B. what changes agriculture brought to human life
C. how Neolithic peoples discovered agriculture
D. why the first agricultural societies failed
13. With agriculture, Neolithic people no longer needed to ____________.
A. move from one place to another
B. exchange goods with others
C. domesticate wild animals
D. worry about their safety
14. “Their surpluses” (in paragraph 3) refer to ____________.
A. the amount of food they had to consume
B. the more food they produced than needed
C. the extent to which they relied on agriculture
D. the increase in population agriculture brought about
15. According to the passage, how did the shift to agricultural societies impact people’s family
A. Family members began to work together to raise food
B. Immediate neighbors often became family members
C. The extended family became less important
D. The nuclear family became self-sufficient
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. B 15. C

Students’ Union
【答案】Dear fellow students,
Recently it’s common to see some uncivilized practices on campus such as littering and wasting resources. I, on behalf of the Student Union, would like to call on everyone to contribute to an eco-friendly campus.
Firstly, we should make recycling as easy as possible. A simple way to do this is bearing garbage classification in mind, throwing different kinds of waste into different dustbins.
Secondly, conserve water, electricity and paper. For example, turn off the tap and the lights when not in use, and reuse used paper on the back, thus reducing waste of resources.
Let’s make the campus a greener place! Only through joint efforts can we achieve this goal.

【答案】范文
At this moment, Jeremy was walking by and saw them. Noticing Tamika’s teary eyes, Jeremy swallowed what he’d intended to say. A sense of guilt seized him and he stood there, frozen. Miss Snowden smiled and encouraged him, “An apology never comes late.” Jeremy raised his eyebrows and said in a low voice, “I shouldn’t have said that. Sorry.” Tamika looked down at her skates, wiped her tears and murmured, “Actually, that’s OK. It’s my skates”, spinning the loose wheel.
“I can fix it,” Jeremy said with confidence. Grabbing her skates, Jeremy tightened the screws in no time. He looked up brightly and handed the skates to Tamika. Tamika tried her skates and surprisingly they were working well. A slight smile lifted, “Thanks”. Jeremy felt a wave of relief flooding into his heart. “I help my dad fix things all the time. You know, I didn’t go anywhere either this summer.” he said. Then they three looked at each other and burst into laughter. Truly, they did not have to travel far to learn anything new.
