These are the worst shoes I have ever worn! The leather came off after only one week, and everybody thought they were ugly. The bottom of the shoes made everything slippery. My employer fired me because he hated them! From then on, I will only wear Brand X shoes!
Kevin★★★★★
My favorite shoes! I’ve been to many conferences where my business fellows have told me how much they like my shoes. Just wearing them makes me feel more calm and content in the office. I recommend them to all of my co-workers, and I own a pair of each color.
Baron★★★
These shoes do exactly what shoes are supposed to do. There isn’t anything too special about them. In the morning I put them on and go about my day. They look delightful enough, and they are quite durable. I will probably buy another pair.

These shoes are my most cherished possession. I met my bride while buying a pair of these shoes. On November 14, 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt was on a hunting trip in Mississippi while trying to settle a line(边界) problem between Mississippi and Louisiana. Being an expert outdoorsman, he liked to hunt large animals.
However, his hunt was going poorly that days, and he couldn’t seem to find anything worthy of firing his gun. His followers, trying to help him, caught a Louisiana black baby bear for the President to shoot, but he refused. The thought of shooting a bear that was tied to a tree did not seem sporting, so he spared the life of the baby bear and set it free.
A famous political cartoonist for the Washington Star, Mr. Clifford Berryman, drew a cartoon titled, Drawing the Line in Mississippi, which used the story of the President refusing to shoot the bear.
The cartoon in the Washington Star showed Teddy Roosevelt, gun in hand, with his back turned on a pretty baby bear. Morris Michtom, owner of a Brooklyn toy store, got the idea from the cartoon and make a toy bear. Planning to use it only as a display, he placed the bear in his toy store window, and next to it placed a copy of the cartoon from the newspaper. To Michtom's surprise, he was surrounded by customers eager to buy it. He asked for and received President Roosevelt's permission to use his name for the bears that he and his wife made, and the Teddy Bear was born! Michtom soon made Teddy bears by the thousands. The money from selling Teddy bears made him, in 1903, form the Ideal Toy Company.

A study confirmed that the cracks found on Mars’s surface last year by the Curiosity Rover are evidence of ancient lakes that likely dried up about 3.5 billion years ago. The new study provides further evidence of what the climate on the Red Planet may have been like in its ancient past.
The study, published online in Geology, proved that cracks on Mars’s surface previously photographed by Curiosity are dry mud cracks which could have only been formed when wet ground was exposed to the air. This conclusion was based on an analysis of a single area of rock known as “Old Soaker.”
Researchers used the Curiosity rover and information from its many tools including the Mars Hand Lens Imager ChemCam Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectrometer (LIBS) and the Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS) to study both the physical appearance and the chemistry of the rock, which is described as no bigger than a coffee table.
The analysis showed that cracks on the rocks were formed by exposure to air, rather than heat or the flow of water. In addition, the shape of the cracks suggests it experienced a single drying event on the planet, rather than getting wet and drying over repeatedly. The position of the cracks, closer to the center of the ancient lake rather than alongside it, also suggests that the lake levels changed often, rising and falling over time.
“The mud cracks are exciting because they help us to understand this ancient lake system,” lead study author Nathaniel Stein, a geologist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, said, referring to the ancient lake system on the planet.
Scientists have known of the existence of ancient water on Mars for years. A 2015 NASA study that measured water in Mars’s atmosphere suggested that ancient oceans may once have had more water than our own Arctic Ocean. However, because the planet has less gravity and a thinner atmosphere than Earth, this water evaporated(蒸发) into space over the course of several billion years.
8. What is the Curiosity Rover
A. An organization. B. A scientist.
C. A planet. D. A machine.
9. What do we know about the discovery on Mars
A. The cracks are near the center of an ancient lake.
B. Mars was getting wet and drying more than once.
C. The lake level on Mars seldom changes over time.
D. The cracks on the rocks were formed by water flow.
10. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Ancient water still exists on Mars now.
B. The gravity on Mars is stronger than that on Earth.
C. The atmosphere on Earth is thicker than that on Mars.
D. The ancient Arctic Ocean had more water than it has now.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. Water on Mars. B. A trip to Mars.
C. A study on Mars. D. Cracks on Mars.

Listening to birds sing or watching them fly is more than just entertaining. Being around birds offers benefits for emotional well-being, a new study finds.
Researchers used a phone app to collect information on how this specific nature exposure could be good for mental wellness.
“Most previous studies have looked at the benefits of nature as a whole,” says lead author Ryan Hammoud, a research assistant at King’s College London. “We chose to focus on birdlife to try and understand which specific characteristics of nature benefit mental health. None of the previous studies had investigated this in real-time and real-world contexts.
For their experiments, researchers used the Urban Mind app to follow 1,292 people who completed nearly 27,000 assessments. Participants were from the United Kingdom, the European Union, and the United States. Three times each day, the app asked users whether they could hear or see birds. They were asked to answer follow-up questions on their mental state at the time, so researchers could see if there was a connection and how long it lasted.
Mental well-being was measured with questions about whether they were feeling confident, relaxed, happy, for example, or more negative feelings such as whether they felt anxious, stressed, or lonely.
The study collected data on people who have mental health conditions and those without. They discovered that bird activity is linked to improvements in emotional health in those who don’t have mental health concerns, as well as those who have been diagnosed with depression. They discovered that the effects were still observed in the following assessment which was up to eight hours later.
This exciting research shows just how much the sight and the sound of birdsong lift the spirits. It captures evidence that our senses are stimulated by birdsong, which is a precious part of nature that should be experienced.
12. In what way is the research different from previous ones
A. It discovered the entertaining part of birds.
B. It looks at humans as a valuable part of nature.
C. It looks at the benefits of a specific aspect of nature.
D. It discovered the contributing factors to emotional health.
13. Why did Urban Mind app ask the participants questions
A. To cheer up the participants.
B. To provide real-time guidance.
C. To record the locations of birds.
D. To collect data for the research.
14. What can be learned about the effect birds have on the participants
A. It lasts for hours.
B. It’s still uncertain.
C. It depends on health conditions.
D. It’s linked to where the birds are seen.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Nature Exposure Is Good for Mental Wellness
B. Seeing or Hearing Birds Is Good for Well-being
C. Scientists Are Researching into Specific Characteristics of Nature
D. A Phone App Is Helping Collect Data in Real-world Experiments

Tom was working in a big company. He had been on the road visiting people for more than a month without going home. He couldn’t wait to get back to see his wife and children. It was coming up on Mother’s Day, and he usually tried to make it “back home”, but this year he was just too busy and too tired. The day when he was driving in a small town, he saw a flower shop. He said to himself, “I know what I will do. I’ll send my mother some roses.”
He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a young man talking to the girl in it. “How many roses can I get for five dollars, Ms. ” the boy asked. The girl was trying to explain that roses were expensive. Maybe the young man would be happy with something else.
“No. I have to have roses,” he said. “My mom was badly sick last year and I didn’t get to spend much time with her. I want to get her something special. It has to be red roses, because those are her favorite.” He was stubborn.
The girl in the shop looked up at Tom and was just shaking her head. Something inside Tom was touched by the boy’s voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly. Tom had been blessed with his business, and he looked at the girl and silently said that he would pay for the boy’s roses.
The girl looked at the young man and said, “OK, I will give you a dozen red roses for your dollars.” The young man almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran out of the store. It was worth more than fifty dollars just to see that kind of excitement.
Tom ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have them delivered (递送) to his mother. After that, with relief (松了一口气) he drove down the road. Not long after his driving, he saw the boy walking to a graveyard (墓地).

Tom stopped his car and followed the young man.

Researchers used the Curiosity rover and information from its many tools including the Mars Hand Lens Imager, ChemCam Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectrometer (LIBS) and the Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS) to study both the physical appearance and the chemistry of the rock, which is described as no bigger than a coffee table.
C The lake level on Mars seldom changes over time.
D 9. A 10. C 11. D

此处为固定短语the number of “……的数量”。故填the。
故填when。
故填To protect。

I’m with a merry heart to introduce one of the most outstanding Chinese traditional cultures, which is the Traditional Chinese Medicine.
First of all, with a long history, Traditional Chinese Medicine, shortened as TCM, has experienced thousands of years of practice and development. Therefor, it is full of the wisdom of our Chinese ancestors. In addition, TCM is also a science, whose advantages are being more and more widely recognized by people. From my point of view, different from Western medicine, TCM aims at helping people strengthen their immunity and their body to heal itself, especially before the disease develops too long.
Traditional Chinese Medicine is well worth knowing by the whole world.

Paragraph 1:
Tom stopped his car and followed the young man.

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Tom stopped his car and followed the young man. The young man went up to a small monument and knelt down. He carefully put the flowers before it and began to sob, “Dear Mom, I love you. But how I regret that I didn’t tell it to you when you were with me. I knew you loved roses, but why didn’t I send the flowers to you when I could still see you and talk with you Now, you have gone to another world. How I regret that I didn’t tell you I love you so much!”
Paragraph 2:
Tom went into the car in tears. His mother’s home wasn’t far from here, but he hadn’t seen her for so long a time. He didn’t have a talk with her or say how much he loved her for so long a time. He turned the car and drove towards the flower shop quickly. When he arrived, he asked the girl to give back the flowers because he wanted to send them personally to his mom.
