Dear Bobby,
Sorry I haven't written for so long, but I've been busy trying to get used to my new school. It's not easy changing schools, believe me!
Where do I start I'll tell you about my school first. It's a five-minute walk from my new house, so there is no need to worry about being late for school. As you know, I don't like getting up early in the morning. There's large space in the school and it has a fully-equipped gym (设备齐全的体育馆), a huge library, a large dining hall and three outdoor fields for football, basketball and tennis. Cool, don't you think so
Now, about my new teachers. Most of them are good. Well, my maths teacher is really strict. He's tall, thin and has a thick beard (胡须). He gives us lots of work to do both in class and for homework. One good thing about him, though, is that he tells good jokes.
All in all, I can't complain (抱怨). I've made two new friends who live in my neighbourhood and we've joined the football team together. However, I do miss you and all our other friends.
Well, I'd better work hard here. Say hello to everyone and write soon.
Take care!

One evening, an old man was sitting on a bench (长凳) on the top of a hill. He was looking down at the town where he lived, down in the valley (溪谷) below him.
Just then, a traveller who carried a stick with a bag walked up to him.
“Excuse me, sir,” the traveller said. “I am going to the town down in the valley. Do you know it ”
“Yes,” said the old man.
“Well,” said the traveller. “Can you tell me — what are the people like in that town ”
The old man thought for a bit. Then he said, “Tell me — what were the people like in the towns you visited ”
“Oh,” said the traveller. “Many of them were horrible (可恶的) people. I didn't like them and they didn't like me either.”
And the old man said, “I'm sorry to tell you that the people in the town in the valley are horrible too. You won't like them.”

In 1999, the writer Paul Auster was asked if he would write stories for America's National Public Radio. But Auster decided to ask listeners to send in their stories instead. He wanted true stories that seemed like fiction (虚构的事). They could be about anything at all, and they just had to be true and short. The ones chosen would be read aloud on the radio.
To Auster's surprise, more than 4, 000 listeners sent in stories. It would be impossible to read them all on the radio, so Auster took about 200 of them and put them in the book True Tales of American Life.
I like some of the stories in the collection, others not so much. Because the stories were written by common people, they're not always well-written like those of good writers. And the categorisation (分类) like Families, Objects, Strangers, or Animals means that if you read one story after another, it can be a bit repetitive (重复乏味的). But because it has separate stories, you can just read one here and there whenever you feel like it. You don't have to read it from start to finish, and that is probably the best thing about it.
What's great about these stories is their veracity — they're all true, no matter how unbelievable. Some of the stories left me almost in tears (眼泪). They were so moving.
So, all in all, it's worth (值得) getting and reading. Find some time to read the book. And if you're interested in real-life stories like these, a book called The Moth is also great for you — more on this next time.
( )11. What kind of stories was Auster looking for
A. Popular funny stories.
B. True and short stories.
C. The listeners' favourite stories.
D. True stories about famous people.
( )12. After Auster got the stories, he _______.
A. sold them to make money
B. wrote an article about them
C. put some of them in a book
D. read all of them on the radio
( )13. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. You can read the book in any place.
B. The stories were written by common people.
C. The stories are categorised into different parts.
D. You don't have to read the book from start to finish.
( )14. What does the underlined word “veracity” in Paragraph 4 mean in Chinese
A. 有效性 B. 合理性 C. 完整性 D. 真实性
( )15. What is the writer's opinion on True Tales of American Life
A. It's worth reading.
B. The stories are so well-written.
C. It is more interesting than The Moth.

King Yu Combating the Flood is an ancient Chinese mythology. It is set in the time of Yao. It tells exciting stories about Da Yu. The Chinese land is troubled by floods.
