What’s the fun of being an architect (建筑师) For many, it’s perhaps about building new buildings. But for French architects Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal, it’s about rebuilding. Their rule is “never demolish (拆毁), never remove or replace, always add, transform (改造), and reuse!”
After practicing this belief for nearly 40 years, they won the 2021 Pritzker Architecture Prize. For architects, this is like the Nobel Prize. To them, demolishing a building is “an act of violence (暴力)”. “It is a waste of many things – a waste of energy, a waste of material, and a waste of history,” Lacaton said. “Transformation is the opportunity of doing more and better with what is already existing (存在).”
When they work on an old building, they try to keep the structure that is already there. They use strong, sustainable (可持续的) and cheap materials such as concrete (混凝土), steel and glass to make the building a more enjoyable place to live or work in.
They have finished more than 30 projects across Europe and West Africa. Their work is kind to both people and the environment. In one case, they took an old apartment building in France and added covered outdoor terraces (露台). This not only made the apartments bigger, but allowed people to grow winter gardens and enjoy more natural light and air, reducing their need for electricity.Projects like this are also cheaper to build, saving money and natural resources.
“Good architecture … must be something familiar, useful and beautiful, with the ability to quietly support the life that will take place within it,” Lacaton said.
