Every day when Glen Oliver orders his morning coffee at the drive-through window of a local cafe, he insists on paying for the order of the person behind him. He also asks the restaurant workers to tell the customer to have a great day, in case they’re not already having one.
Oliver has never made a big deal out of his own generous actions until a letter was published by a news website in November. He found out that he had not just bought someone his breakfast —he had saved a life.
According to the website, someone had written a letter stating that on July 18th, he was planning on committing suicide. The writer said that while he was at the drive-through window, he was planning on going home, writing a note and ending his life. When he went to pay for his coffee and muffin, however, the cashier told him that the man in the SUV in front of him had picked up the tab and told him to have a great day.
“I wondered why someone would buy coffee for a stranger for no reason,” said the writer. “Why me Why today If I were a religious man, I would take this as a sign. This random act of kindness was directed at me on this day for a purpose.”
When the writer arrived home, he couldn’t hold back his tears and started to think about the simple good deed that had affected him so deeply. “I decided at that moment to change my plans for the day and do something nice for someone. I ended up helping a neighbor take groceries out of her car and into the house.”
The writer says that in the months following that fateful event, he does at least one kind thing for others every day. “To the nice man in the SUV, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Please know your kind gesture has truly saved a life,” he said. “On July 18, 2017, I had the greatest day.”

What do you do at the end of the day when you’re finished with work How you spend your free time can have a big impact on your mental health. Hobbies can help you relax and ease pent-up(郁结的) stress caused by all that time in the office or in front of the computer. But, interestingly, how you spend your free time can also impact your work performance.
Researchers at the University of Sheffield's Institute of Work Psychology in the UK found that developing hobbies can develop your confidence about how well you perform your job. But your hobby has to be significantly different from what you do from 9-to-5 work.
To study the connection between work and leisure activities, researchers employed 129 people who worked and were active in hobbies like rock climbing, musical theater and singing. They had them complete surveys to see how serious and committed they were to their hobbies and how demanding their jobs were. Then, each month for seven months, participants were asked how many hours they spent on their hobbies and how they rated their ability to perform at work.
Researchers found that if people have hobbies similar to what they do at work and that they do in an intense way, their on-the-job confidence can suffer. It's likely because their work and leisure time have the same mental and physical demands, so they’re always feeling drained.
In contrast, people who have hobbies different from their work are happier and healthier. This is also true of those who choose a similar hobby but only participate in a light-hearted way. Those playful recreations act as a barrier between their professional and personal lives, giving them rest time to “recharge their batteries”, the researchers say.
“When we feel like we have the confidence to handle challenges in our jobs. We’re more likely to be able to build a sustainable job and remain healthy, productive, happy and employable over our lifetimes. It's important to consider how our leisure activities might play a role in that process,” lead researcher Ciara Kelly said in a statement.
28. Why can your hobby improve your mental health
A. It helps you to recover from your stress.
B. It surely improve your physical strength.
C. It enables you to behave more actively.
D. It increases your willingness to work hard.
29. Which of the following is advised according to paragraph 2
A. A basketball coach goes running. B. A writer keeps a diary every day.
C. An e-game developer surfs the Internet. D. A doctor sometimes climbs rocks.

A. Worried. B. Tired. C. Unconfident. D. Disappointed.
31. How can people benefit from hobbies similar to their work
A. Take them seriously. B. Set strict schedules for them.
C. Participate in them just for fun. D. Develop them into their business.

Photographic self-portraits have existed for as long as cameras have been in human hands. But what about selfies in space On Twitter last year, NASA astronaut Edwin Buzz Aldrin, who famously became the second man to walk on the moon in July 1969, laid claim to a spaceflight first; taking the first selfie in space during the Gemini Xll mission in 1966.
“For me, it needs to be digital to be a selfie.” argues Jennifer Levasseur, a director at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. According to Levasseur, the concept of a selfie is directly linked to internet culture. “The thing that makes a selfie a selfie is sharing it.” she says.
Still, astronauts have been carrying cameras aboard space vehicles since the 1960s. In 1966, Aldrin used a Hasselblad camera designed specifically for space, with an extra-large trigger(触发器) to accommodate the astronaut's thick gloves. Hasselblad also painted the first camera in space a matte (磨 砂)black to reduce reflections in the orbiter window. But cameras used in space need to survive extreme conditions, like temperature swings from - 149° to 248°F, so Hasselblad painted later models silver.
Astronauts visiting the moon then had to take out the film magazines and leave their camera bodies behind when they returned to Earth, because early space missions were limited by a weight limit on the return trip. Then a big change in space camera technology came after the space shuttle Columbia broke apart on its return to Earth in 2003. Levasseur notes. “Fear that they’d never be able to bring film back from space and lose all that hard work” accelerated the push for digital, she says.
Today, astronauts also have access to internet and social platforms in space and can post true space selfies made using digital cameras. Similarly, space robots are participating in selfie culture, capturing(拍摄)remote pictures of themselves in space or on other planets and sending them back to Earth.
32.Why do selfies in space need to be digital according to Jennifer Levasseur
A. Astronauts are fond of studying technology.
B. Astronauts are eager to improve themselves.
C. Astronauts desire to communicate on social platforms.
D. Astronauts want to take some related information back.
33.Why can the Hasselblad camera adjust to the temperature changes in space
A. It is painted silver. B. Its matte black gathers light.
C. Its trigger is large enough. D. It can reduce reflection itself.
34.What contributed to the faster development of camera technology in space
A. The heavy space tasks. B. A spaceflight crash.
C. A damaged space shuttle. D. The improved film.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Origin of Selfies in Space B. The Popularity of Selfies in Space
C. The Significance of Selfies in Space D. The Brief History of Selfies in Space

A tornado(龙卷风) hit a small town nearby, leaving many families completely destroyed. Afterward all the local newspapers carried many human interest stories featuring some of the families who suffered the most difficult period to appeal to people’s attention and assistance.
One Sunday, a particular picture especially touched me. A young woman stood in front of a simple mobile home, with a depressed expression on her face. A young boy, seven or eight years old, stood at her side, eyes downcast. Hiding behind her skirt was a tiny girl who stared into the camera, wide eyes with confusion and fear. The article that went with the picture gave the clothing size of each family member. With growing interest, I noticed that sizes of the family closely matched ours. This would be a good opportunity to teach my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and three-year-old Meghan to help those less fortunate than themselves.
"We have so much. And these poor people now have nothing," I said. "We’ll share what we have with them." I brought three large boxes down from the room upstairs and placed them on the living room floor. Meghan watched seriously, as the boys and I filled one of the boxes with canned goods and food. While I sorted through our clothes, I encouraged the boys to go through their toys and donate some of their less favorite things. The boys were pleased to join. Brad rose and went to his room fast. He came back bringing his action figures that he played with not so frequently. Brett also jumped up and ran to fetch some of his Matchbox cars and airplane models. Meghan watched quietly as the boys piled up abandoned toys.
The boys placed the objects they had chosen to donate into one of the boxes while I filled the third box with clothes. Meghan walked up with Lucy, her worn, faded, best-loved rag doll hugged tightly to her chest. "I’ll help you find something for the little girl, too," I said to little Meghan.
Paragraph 1:
"Mommy, I will give Lucy to them," Meghan turned to me. __________________________________
_____
Paragraph 2:
Recognizing what little Meghan’s gesture meant, I removed my old jacket from the box of clothes. _

第二节 读后续写
Paragraph 1:
"Mommy, I will give Lucy to them," Meghan turned to me. "Oh, honey," I said. "You don’t have to give Lucy. You love her so much." Meghan nodded seriously, eyes glistening with tears. "Lucy makes me happy, Mommy. Maybe she’ll make that little girl happy, too." She paused in front of the box that held the toys, pressed her round little face into Lucy’s flat face, gave her a final kiss, then laid her gently on top of the other toys. The boys watched, open-mouthed, as their baby sister placed her favorite doll in the box.
Paragraph 2:
Recognizing what little Meghan’s gesture meant, I removed my old jacket from the box of clothes. I replaced it with the new green jacket that I bought last week. I believed the young woman in the picture would like it as much as I did. The boys were inspired by our behavior and offered their beloved things to the family. We all wished the family could pass the difficult period as soon as possible and that they would love the things we gave them with all our heart.

Meghan walked up with Lucy, her worn, faded, best-loved rag doll hugged tightly to her chest"可知,Lucy是Meghan最爱的布娃娃,因此可推测下文会描述我们听到她这样说时的惊讶以及Meghan对布娃娃的依依不舍。
