Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy, while her wealthy English parents were travelling in Europe. As a child, she travelled to many places with her family and learned how to speak several languages.
When Nightingale was 17, she told her family that she was going to help sick people. Her parents did not approve, but Nightingale was determined.
She travelled to hospitals all over Europe. She saw that doctors were working too hard. She saw that patients died because they did not get enough care. Nightingale felt that women could be doing more to help doctors take care of sick people.
Nightingale knew that in order for nurses to do more, they needed special training in how to take care of sick people. Nightingale went to a hospital in Germany to study nursing. Then she returned to London and became the head of a group of women called Gentlewomen During Illness. These women cared for sick people in their homes.
In 1854, England was fighting a war with Russia. No reporters wrote about the terrible conditions in the hospitals that cared for the wounded. People demanded that something be done about it. A leader of the government asked Nightingale to take some nurses into the war hospitals. So, in November 1854, Nightingale finally got to work in a hospital. She took along 38 nurses whom she had trained herself.
At first, the doctors on the battlefields did not want Nightingale and her nurses in their hospitals. They did not believe that women could help. But in fact, the nurses did make a difference. They worked around the clock, tending the sick. Thanks to their hard work, many wounded soldiers survived.
After the war, Nightingale and her nurses were treated like heroes. Finally, in 1860, she started the Nightingale School for Nurses. In time, thanks to Florence Nightingale, nursing became an important part of medicine.

A. They didn’t care about it. B. They supported it.

A. It was not practical. B. It turned out to be a success.
C. It was rejected by the government. D. It was welcomed by many doctors.
7. What role did Nightingale play according to the passage
A. A reporter of the war. B. A pioneer in women’s illness.
C. The founder of modern nursing. D. An educator in women’s education.

A short while ago, I lost access to my We Chat account.I am not sure why it wouldn’t let me log in; perhaps it was my ancient, out-of-date phone. But I wasn’t upset because it offered me an opportunity to take a break from social media-something more and more people are doing.
In the United States, Twitter and Facebook has seen a 44 percent decline among its younger users. Stars such as Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeren have taken a break from social media because they were tired of so many Internet trolls leaving negative comments. Ordinary people (like me) are turning away from it because of the feeling that they were spending more time online and enjoying less.
It is not unusual for people to spend two or three hours a day posting or reading posts, to the point where it becomes an addiction. And it is an addiction. There is a chemical in your brain known as dopamine (多巴胺) which is sometimes called the “reward molecule”and its release gives you a feeling of pleasure. For instance, when you post a photo on We Chat and get a hundred likes, you feel happy. That’s dopamine at work.
In my case, being off We Chat is actually an added bonus. No doubt I missed my dopamine. And I got e-mails from friends wondering if I was fine or if I was just being anti-social. But I soon began to feel quite peaceful and started to worry less about what other people were doing and concentrate more on my personal life. And I’m getting better sleep at night.
I’m not advocating that all of you quit social media, but spending less time on these platforms does bring you advantages.
8. How did the author feel after he lost access to We Chat account
A. Calm. B. Worried.
C Disappointed. D. Surprised.
9. Why does the author list famous stars in paragraph 2
A. To illustrate the importance of social media.
B. To compare them with ordinary people.
C. To give examples of quitting online platforms.
D. To show the popularity of social media.
10. What does the underlined word probably mean
A. Desire. B. Benefit.
C. Mission. D. Joy.
11. What might the author continue talking about
A. How to form good online habits.
B. How to use social media properly.
C. How to be smart online learners.
D. How to cut down the time spent online.

It’s no secret that Auckland(the largest city in New Zealand)is a diverse city full of different cultures and new research has shown exactly how it and the rest of the country are changing.
More than 200 ethnic groups are recorded as living here and Auckland has a wider variety of cultural groups than London or Sydney, with 40 percent of its population made up of different ethnicities.
The changing makeup of the country’s population is showed in the latest NZ Geographic magazine, which focuses on ethnic diversity, age, wealth and attitudes, drawn from the latest census(人口普查)figures.
Massey University humanities and social sciences research director Professor Paul Spoonley said Auckland’s multiculturalism today is way beyond what experts believed likely a few years ago.
Asian communities,in particular,in New Zealand have almost doubled since 2001,when 6.6 percent of the Kiwi people(New Zealanders)were Asian. The proportion(比例)in Auckland was 14.6 percent. By 2006,18.9 percent of the citizens in the city were Asian and today 23 percent identify themselves as Asian.
Nationally, the census showed 11.8 percent of the population was Asian—and that figure was increasing.“The figures are higher than I would have thought a few years back.”Mr.Spoonley said.“And the healthcare system is attracting Asian workers.”
The article also showed that Kiwis had overall become more accepting of migrant communities and particularly of Asian peoples. That had been a hugely noticeable change,Mr.Spoonley said.
An Asian community leader Kai Luey in Auckland said there were a number of things that attracted Asians to New Zealand and particularly to Auckland. “The environment is clean, there’s fresh air and there’s safety of food. There’s a good education system here in New Zealand...”
New Zealand was also considered to be a much safer place than many other countries, such as America Canada and Australia.
12. How is Auckland different from London or Sydney
A. It changes rapidly. B. It values ethnic cultures.
C. It has a larger population. D. It is a more diverse city.
13. What does Paul Spoonley think of Auckland’s today’s multiculturalism
A. It takes experts by surprise. B. It lets experts down.
C. It is the same as he thought. D. It is due to Auckland’s education system.
14. What can we learn about from the latest NZ Geographic census figures
A. Asian makes up about 12% of New Zealand’ population.
B. A hugely noticeable change is that migrants are decreasing.
C. Asian communities in New Zealand have doubled since 2006.
D. Today, less than 20% of the citizens in Auckland are Asian.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Auckland— New Zealand’ Largest City
B Auckland-New Zealand’ Safest Place
C. Auckland— New Zealand’ Melting Pot
D. Auckland— New Zealand’ Most Crowded Place

Money Couldn’t Buy Everything
Fifteen years ago, I was born in a big family. I had been taught that money couldn’t buy everything ever since I was a little kid. My parents are the most hard-working people I have ever seen. As much as my parents tried to teach me these values, some could only be learned through personal experiences.
As a child, I would sit in the church trying to concentrate on the words of the priest (牧师),but my attention was soon attracted by the shining gold and the diamonds worn by the Saturday churchgoers. As my eyes began to wander, I noticed men dressed in their tailored suits and shirts with women in their designer dresses.
My family, on the other hand, was the opposite of rich. Our clothes had been washed so many times that the colors had become dull and lifeless. Although this showed the money struggles of our large family, our faces were always washed and hair neatly combed. When sitting on the old big red and white truck after the service, I pictured the lives led by those driving their brand-new cars, wishing I would be one of them.
I never stopped those daydreams, even when I was in middle school. Since it was a private school, most of the children came from wealthy families. Although I could hide my lack of wealth at school by wearing our school uniforms, my situation was embarrassingly obvious on weekends with my classmates wearing designer jeans and I had no choice but to wear my sisters’ old jeans. I never fitted in with my classmates. To my relief, there was only one girl named Julie who opened her heart to me. I was attached to her. Soon, her birthday was approaching. Julie invited me to attend her birthday party.
Paragraph 1:
However, I grew upset as I couldn’t afford a gift.

Paragraph 2:
When she opened the gift box, my heart was too nervous to beat.

A. Calm. B. Worried.
C. Disappointed. D. Surprised.
9. Why does the author list famous stars in paragraph 2
A. To illustrate the importance of social media.
B. To compare them with ordinary people.
C. To give examples of quitting online platforms.
D. To show the popularity of social media.
10. What does the underlined word probably mean
A. Desire. B. Benefit.
C. Mission. D. Joy.
11. What might the author continue talking about
A. How to form good online habits.
B. How to use social media properly.
C. How to be smart online learners.
D. How to cut down the time spent online.
A 9. C 10. B 11. D

根据第二段“In the United States,Twitter and Facebook has seen a 44 percent decline among its younger users. Stars such as Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeren have taken a break from social media because they were tired of so many Internet trolls leaving negative comments. (在美国,Twitter和Facebook的年轻用户数量下降了44%。泰勒·斯威夫特和艾德·希林等明星已经暂时远离社交媒体,因为他们厌倦了太多网络喷子留下的负面评论。)”可知,第二段陈述了美国很多用户退出Twitter和Facebook,作者列出了远离社交媒体的著名的明星。目的是举一些退出网络平台的例子。故选C项。

词句猜测题。根据划线词所在句“I’m not advocating that all of you quit social media, but spending less time on these platforms does bring you advantages.(并不是主张大家都放弃社交媒体,但减少在这些平台上的时间确实会给你带来advantages。)”

New Zealand was also considered to be a much safer place than many other countries, such as America, Canada and Australia.
B. Auckland-New Zealand’ Safest Place
C. Auckland— New Zealand’ Melting Pot
D. Auckland— New Zealand’ Most Crowded Place

分析句子可知,空处在句中为后置定语,修饰名词work,结合空后“by the graceful hand movements of the bird-related dance of the ethnic Bai people”可知,此处指“这部作品是受到了白族与鸟有关的舞蹈中优美的手部动作的启发”,所以非谓语动词inspire与名词work为动宾关系,用过去分词表示被动。
短语:talent for sth.“有……的天赋”,故填for。
【38题详解】
考查时态。句意:后来,她离开家乡,在中国和海外的大剧院和艺术节上演出,并获得了多个奖项。空处在句中为谓语,结合前文“she left her hometown and”可知,perform与谓语left构成并列关系,所以时态用一般过去时,故填performed。
结合空前“a number of”,所以此处用名词复数awards,故填awards。
分析句子可知,“ (wear) a long pink dress with a hand-embroidered tiger in the front”在句中为状语,句子主语Yang,为非谓语动词wear的逻辑主语,与其为主谓关系,所以此处用现在分词wearing表主动,处于句首,所以首字母大写。

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
However, I grew upset as I couldn’t afford a gift. It would be such an embarrassing scene to be present without a gift. I even thought about quitting, but I was not able to bring it forth. I struggled for days but couldn’t figure out any solution. One day, while helping with my hardworking parents with the housework, it suddenly occurred to me that maybe I could make a gift by myself. I immediately started my DIY project, which ended up with a toy doll. The big day finally came. I arrived at her house and handed her the box.
When she opened the gift box, my heart was too nervous to beat. I looked closely at her face, wondering if she would just laugh at me. What happened next was totally beyond my imagination. Upon seeing the doll, Julie let out a cry of excitement and she held it close to her face, saying repeatedly that it was the sweetest gift she had ever received. Her words freed me. I couldn’t help smiling together with her. At that precious moment, I realized money couldn’t buy everything. It was our friendship that really mattered.
