Tony Newton and his wife Marie have spent about 40 years turning their modest (简朴的) yard in the Black Country into what is now named the “four seasons’ garden”.
Grandmother-of-four Marie, 72, started looking after the garden in 1982 while working as a transport planner and a nurse while Tony, 70, joined her after he retired (退休) from medicine.
Marie said, “Tony and I usually spend two hours a day in the garden but obviously since lockdown and the fact that we are over 70 means we have even more time to spare. We are sometimes in the garden all day and only come in when it gets dark.”
“One addition this year was that we put up three bird feeding stations, which we haven’t normally had, and that has given us a huge amount of pleasure,” she added. “We’ve got so many different types of birds coming out.”
“We really miss the grandchildren because they used to love playing here,” she said, though they keep in contact through the Internet. “We’ve got fairy (精灵) houses and the streams they played in. We used to look after them a few nights a week but that’s all stopped.”
“I always look forward to spring and this year has been especially rewarding. I have never seen the garden look so beautiful,” Marie added. “We haven’t been able to count every flower and tree but there are over 3,000 plants in the garden. It has been very satisfying to use so many skills, and to have done everything ourselves.”
The couple have won several awards, including being named the winner of Britain’s Best Garden. The garden has become so popular that it even features in unofficial tourist trails (路线) of the Black Country.
Tony said, “There has been a lot of trial and error (反复试验) to get the garden the way it is now — and over the last few weeks we’ve really been able to explore even more ideas. We’re already planning what to grow for the next season.”

Pupils are receiving laughter therapy (疗法) to fight against post-COVID gloom (疫后忧郁). The 15,000-a-year Brighton Girls school hopes that the hour-long classes will ease anxiety and other effects of lockdown son children.
A report from the Royal College of Psychiatrists has said that almost 200, 000 young people have been referred to mental (精神的) health services in the past three months, almost double the level before the pandemic(大流行病). The government is to give 517 million to strengthen mental health support to help pupils.
Emma Jennings, a laughter therapist, who runs the classes, said: “Children have been separated and no amount of online contact makes up for that.” Her lessons begin with children talking about feeling any nerves or anxiety before they are instructed to laugh “in the style of a James Bond villain (剧中反面人物)”.
Jennings then leads the girls through deep breathing exercises before “playful and silly games” where they are told to point at themselves and laugh while making eye contact. “Eye contact is really important as it has some effect on the brain so you smile because others are smiling and you laugh because others are,” Jennings said. “That is why tiny babies are able to smile at you when you smile at them.” She added: “We end the class by laughing for no reason while sitting in a circle. You just-listen to the sounds of other people’s laughter, which brings more laughter.”
Rosie McColl, the head teacher of Brighton Girls, said: “We thought it would be great to introduce a fun class, which young girls can walk away from having physically felt a drop in stress levels. Children laugh on average 400 times a day while adults manage just 15, which explains why adults are a lot more stressed generally.”
“I’d like to make sure our pupils are laughing as much as possible. We are also introducing the classes for our teachers and parents too.”
8. What problem did the report find
A. More youth can’t afford their education.
B. More youth laugh for no reason in class.
C. More youth have felt down since the pandemic.
D. More youth haven’t received a health check this year.
9. What does Jennings ask students to do at the start of class
A. Have an online contact. B. Talk about their worries.
C. Tell an interesting story. D. See a James Bond movie.
10. Why does Jennings mention tiny babies
A. To show the effects of eye contact.
B. To call on pupils to learn from them.
C. To explain the role of smiling in their growth.
D. To stress the importance of smiling to the brain.
11. What can we learn from McColl’s words
A. She arranges fun classes each week.
B. She thinks adults really need laughter.
C. She encourages girls to take the class.
D. She suggests more schools try the class.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. B
【解析】

【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“We thought it would be great to introduce a fun class, which young girls can walk away from having physically felt a drop in stress levels. Children laugh on average 400 times a day while adults manage just 15, which explains why adults are a lot more stressed generally(我们认为引入一个有趣的课程会很好,年轻女孩可以从身体上感觉到压力水平下降的状态中解脱出来。孩子们平均每天笑400次,而成年人只能笑15次,这就解释了为什么成年人通常压力更大)”可知,成年人压力更大是因为笑声较少,可推理出,McColl认为成年人真的需要笑,故选B项。

A business logo(商标) is necessary for every product. It’s often the first thing a customer sees. Sometimes it even impacts the product’s future.
“The idea is when you rub the lotion(润肤品)bar in your hands, your body heat will warm it up, so you can apply it as lotion instead of using a plastic(塑料的) container you’ll have to throwaway in the end,” said Alexis Kelley, now a freshman at Red Mountain High School in Mesa, Arizona.
While working on her own idea for a more earth-friendly lotion, the 14-year-old was looking for her own logo. “I titled my project the Logic in Logos, because I kind of thought that covered everything and it’s kind of catchy,” said Alexis.
The project was first presented at the state fair, and then at a national competition with scholarship money on the line.
Alexis imagined some companies, designing their “would-be” logos. She considered many factors including round vs angular, warm colors vs cool, and descriptive vs non-descriptive. “I had one brand(品牌) that was Waves Water Bottles and if it was warm colors, people were turned off by it because warm colors like red and yellow aren’t connected with water,” said Alexis regarding one of her many findings.
Each logo was looked over by 50 people and rated along the way. Participants described why they liked or disliked them and gave them a number ranking.
The project and its findings caught the eye of judges(评审员), too. She won first place at the state fair and has now been declared a top 300 Broadcom MASTERS young scientist in a national competition, one that could end with a $25,000 scholarship.
Alexis’ parents, needless to say, were blown away by their daughter mind at such a nearly age. “Alexis was the kind of girl that when she was in the third grade, she was on the playground teaching math to the other kids, that’s who she is,” said Allen Kelley Jr., Alexis’ dad.
The competition will choose 30 finalists later this month. While she may not be chosen, her decision to change the world while continuing to inspire along the way will never change.
12. What is the advantage of the lotion bar
A. It would reduce the cost. B. It would be very easy to use.
C. It would keep one’s body warm. D. It would be good for the environment.
13. What did Alexis pay special attention to when designing the logo for “Waves Water Bottles”
A. The shape of the logo. B. The colors of the logo.
C. Whether the logo attracts teens. D. Whether the logo is descriptive.
14. What is the purpose of paragraph 8
A. To suggest Allen is proud of Alexis.
B. To show Alexis is good at designing·
C. To tell us of Allen’s efforts to teach Alexis.
D. To show Alexis loved studying as a child.
15. What was the result of the national competition
A. Alexis won first prize. B. Alexis won a scholarship.
C. Alexis was one of the 30 finalists. D. Alexis was one of the top 300 scientists.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了亚利桑那州梅萨市红山高中的大一新生Alexis Kelley为自己的点子寻找商标的故事。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“The idea is when you rub the lotion(润肤品)bar in your hands, your body heat will warm it up, so you can apply it as lotion instead of using a plastic(塑料的) container you’ll have to throwaway in the end(这个想法是,当你用手摩擦乳液棒时,你的体温会使它变热,所以你可以把它当成一种润肤品,而不是用一个最终不得不扔掉的塑料容器)”可知,使用这种乳液棒就不需要塑料容器了,可推理出这个想法对环境有益,故选D项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“I had one brand(品牌) that was Waves Water Bottles and if it was warm colors, people were turned off by it because warm colors like red and yellow aren’t connected with water,” said Alexis regarding one of her many findings.( Alexis在谈到她的众多发现之一时说:“我有一个品牌叫Waves Water Bottles,如果它是暖色的,人们会对它感到反感,因为像红色和黄色这样的暖色与水无关”)”可知,Alexis在设计品牌Waves Water Bottles的时候,特别关注的是颜色,故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第八段“Alexis was the kind of girl that when she was in the third grade, she was on the playground teaching math to the other kids (亚历克西斯是那种三年级时在操场上教其他孩子数学的女孩)”可推理出本段主要目的是展示亚历克西斯的父母对她感到自豪,故选A项。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第三段“She won first place at the state fair and has now been declared a top 300 Broadcom MASTERS young scientist in a national competition(她在州博览会上获得了第一名,现在在一场全国性比赛中被宣布为博通MASTERS青年科学家前300名)”可知,比赛结果是亚历克西斯是前300名年轻科学家之一,故选D项。

A Beautiful Brooch
In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw a beautiful brooch ( 胸 针 ) in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the price five dollars was too high for Reuben Earle. Five dollars would buy almost a week’s food for his family.
Reuben couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Dora. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home and the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children, but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.
Nevertheless, he opened the shop’s door and went inside. Standing proudly and straight in his flour-sack ( 面粉袋改做)shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding,“But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time ”
“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “People around here don’t usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should keep for a while.”
Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would get surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering (捶打) from a side street, Reuben suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece. That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin.
注意:1. 续写词数应150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1:
Every day after school, Reuben started his plan.

Paragraph 2:
Finally, the time came!
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Every day after school, Reuben started his plan. Cold and hungry, Reuben wandered the streets, searching for the nail bags carefully. To save more money, he even decided to deliver papers in the early morning. Exhausted and tired as he felt, he still stuck to the plan. It was the brooch in the shop window that reminded him that what he did was worthwhile. After a long time of hard work, he made it eventually.
Finally, the time came! He took out the soda tin, poured the coins out and began to count. Five dollars! His hard work paid off! Holding the soda tin firmly, Reuben rushed for the shop to buy the brooch. The moment he got the beautiful brooch, he burst through the front door, and placed it in Dora’s hand. Never had Dora received such a gift. Speechless and happy, she held her son tightly in her arms, with tears welling up in her eyes.

D
