At just 19 years old, Aki a Peters teaches at a college. He specializes in a language that is thousands of years old, the Dakota language, spoken by the Dakota people.
“The Dakota language is ‘the most important aspect’ of Dakota culture.Without it, our Dakota culture would no longer exist,” Peters claimed.“I was lucky to grow up around many first-language Dakota speakers. But now the elderly continually passed away and at the end of their lives, they just wanted to know their families would continue to have the language. One of the problems our people have is finding ways to get at-length and consistent exposure to the language.”
Aside from giving instruction at the college level, Peters uses social media to share videos that integrate humor, culture, and basic-level conversation to help teach Dakota. In his free time, he visits Dakota elders. He also started an online group of the youth to converse and share the knowledge of the language in a safe and supportive space.
Aki a Peters wants to tell the youth that if they want to learn their own language, sit with their elders and learn from them.Endless vocabulary sheets could discourage them from learning.Standards created by non-speakers could also do that.“Within the next decade, I assume, I, my colleagues, and other Dakota-learning relatives will have children and start a new generation of Dakota.I also hope my brothers and sisters will take the path we laid out for them and continue to learn and speak Dakota. On my reservation there are numerous young people working on the comeback of the language.I'm hopeful because I'm definitely not alone,” Aki a Peters told Teen Vogue.

Betty Schrampfer Azar is a world-famous expert on teaching English grammar. Here are some of her opinions.
Why do students need to learn grammar? When teachers are deciding which grammar points to teach, they should first ask two questions.First, will understanding the point help students be understood and will it help them understand better?Next, will learning the grammar point help students be acceptable as English speakers
People usually think that grammar is all about memorizing rules. In fact, grammar is not just learning rules. It is a way to help students along the way to communication.Teachers should know that students do not all learn in the same way. Each may have a different learning style when it comes to learning grammar. Some may see a pattern and understand the rule.Others need explanations and more practice.“But to teach grammar as subject matter and test it as though you were testing the memorization of dates in history is sure to bore everybody and not to reach the goals that you are trying to reach — successful communication experiences,” she says.
Why do some teachers hate teaching grammar? Many teachers are not comfortable teaching grammar because they do not know how to answer their students' questions.“Most native speakers of English don't learn it in school,” she says.“If you don't know any grammar of your own language and then you are asked to teach it, it's possible that your students may know more grammar than you and you can't answer their questions.”
Can teaching grammar really be fun?Teachers should learn to make the teaching of grammar fun.She says,“My students enjoy learning grammar as much as I enjoy teaching it.I think grammar is fascinating. It holds language together. It is really beautiful when you get to know it.Grammar is quite a remarkable (非凡的) thing.”

A human heart is so much more than an organ. No one says he left his pancreas (胰腺) in San Francisco, for example, or that two kidneys (肾脏) beat as one.Yet most of us believe that two hearts can beat as one, and that the heart reveals our real emotions. Now there's some evidence that such _folk_wisdom is true.
When people listen to the same story — each alone in their own home — their heart rates rise and fall together, according to a new study published last month in Cell Reports.Professor Lucas Perra, a senior author of the study, said, “It's the story that drives the heart.”
This finding corresponds with a mountain of research showing that our brains synchronize (同步) when we interact in the same location or participate in the same activity. The new study goes one step further; it tests whether our heart rates become synchronized while we are taking in the same narrative — even though we're not in the same room nor even listening at the same time as other listeners.
Marcel Proust wrote at the turn of the 20th century, “The heart does not lie.” Data tells us much the same: The heart's connection with the brain is so tight that when we hear the same story, our heart rates synchronize.Subjects in the same group produced synchronized heart rate patterns that rose and fell at roughly the same times during the narrative.
“The results are heartwarming,” said Prof.Perra.“Heart rate correlation (关联) between subjects does not require them to actually be interactive or even be in the same place. It' s not the interaction between people but the story itself that does the trick.”
The point, he said, is that when we listen to the same radio program or watch the same TV show, our hearts beat together, showing that “we're not alone”.

Sometimes a book comes along that isn't just “interesting” or “well done” — it's a book where it seems like the author looked into your brain and wrote a book specifically for you.A book like that for me was released last week. It's called 100 Things We've Lost to the Internet, written by editor Pamela Paul.
Paul lists 100 things we used to do that the Internet has either changed or taken over completely: writing letters, printing newspapers, the joys of being bored, and not having all the knowledge in the world in your pocket.
As I often accumulate random knowledge, certain entries on the list — Being the Only One, Figuring Out Who That Actor Is — hit_me_where_I_live;_remembering detailed facts is no longer nearly as impressive when everyone has the capability to find the answer in seconds.
On and on the list goes, with every minor shift adding to the pile. What this book does so well is illustrate the growth of that pile; while any individual item might be no big deal, the collected set is significant. It's a list of ways in which the world now is different from the world then.
Obviously, Paul isn't saying that everything back then was better.Time marches on, after all, and it's tough to argue against the many benefits that the Internet has brought into our lives. But that isn't really the point. It's not about whether it used to be better. It's that it used to be different.
100 Things We've Lost to the Internet is a fun read for those of us who share some of Paul's memories and experience. We remember what it was like and we like to remember. The landscape has shifted, and no doubt it will shift again as technology's advancement continues apace. This book serves as a reminder of the simple truth that when gains are made, sometimes something is lost.
1.What is the purpose of the text
A.To review and recommend a good read.
B.To comment on the effect of the Internet.
C.To argue for the viewpoint of a new book.
D.To urge the readers to value what they have.
2.Which might be entries on Paul's list
A.Maps and Eye Contact.
B.E-pay and Compact Disks.
C.Postcards and Homeschooling.
D.Photos and Washing Machines.
3.What do the underlined words “hit me where I live” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Prove what I'm good at.
B.Introduce how I grew up.
C.Describe the place I live in.
D.Speak out what is on my mind.
解析:选D 词义猜测题。根据第一段中的“it's a book ... for you”和第三段中的“As I often accumulate ...hit me where I live”可知,作者认为一本好书的作者似乎就在洞察你的内心,由于作者经常积累不认识的知识,故入选该书的某些事物吸引了作者,由此可推知,Being the Only One, Figuring Out Who That Actor Is应该是说出了作者的内心。
4.What conclusion has the author drawn after reading Paul's book
A.Things in the past are better.
B.There're no gains without pains.
C.The Internet is a double-edged sword.
D.Technology is constantly changing the world.
解析:选D 推理判断题。 根据最后一段中的“The landscape has ... continues apace.”可知,作者认为局面已经变化了,并且毫无疑问的是随着科技的迅速进步,局面将再次发生变化。故可推知读完这本书后作者认为科技在不断地改变着世界。

Tips to Create Great Readers
Are great readers born or are they made Obviously, children don't enter the world knowing how to understand a text or make a prediction.__5__.Here are some tips for making children great readers by habit.
__6__.The most important moment in reading instruction is when children get something wrong. If the child continues practising the skill incorrectly, he or she will build weaker habits.Intervene (干预) with a question, such as “How does this part of the text help you understand this character?” Doing so can prevent poor habits from taking root and build great ones in their place.
Build habits at the moment of writing. Just like adults, children use writing to gather their thoughts about a text and communicate their ideas to others.__7__.For example, children can first have a discussion about what they're reading by answering a focus question in writing:“What is the author trying to teach us in this story?”Then, you can review their written responses.__8__.
Build habits at the moment of reading. Independent reading time is important for any reading program. It's a chance for children to put together everything they've learned in reading lessons and fly using their own wings.__9__.So providing a rich class library and letting children know that they are expected to read for the entire period will bring about their success as lifelong independent readers.
A.Build habits at the moment of error (错误)
B.Make sure children fall in love with reading
C.They grow into great readers by learning great habits
D.But it only works if they really do spend that time reading
E.Therefore, you can develop their writing and reading skills at the same time
F.Specific (特定的) lines or phrases from the text help to show that information
G.By doing this, you can better understand what guidance the children will need during the discussion
5.选C 根据空后的“Here are some tips for making children great readers by habit.”
且G项中的“during the discussion”与空前的“have a discussion”相呼应。

I would like to offer some suggestions before we meet.Firstly, as there are a great number of idioms to choose from, I recommend the most commonly used ones that come from interesting stories. Additionally, many idioms have roots in ancient myths or historical facts. Thus, I advise fully researching their meanings and origins to gain an instructive and fascinating insight into the cultural history of China. In this way, your storytelling will be highly impressive and appealing.
I hope the suggestions above can be of some help to you. Could you please tell me when and where to meet I look forward to further discussion with you.

Schools have always understood this and a lot of them ask their students to wear a uniform. Why?A lot of teachers think a uniform makes students feel that they are part of their school and that their uniform helps them to be serious about their studies. __9__ If all the students wear uniforms, they can't judge each other because of their clothes. It also stops gossips about who or what is fashionable.

But can our clothes really tell people what we are like?__12__ When people see us in the right clothes, they think we are serious about what we are doing.Furthermore, if we are clean, smart and polite, people will believe us a lot.

We shouldn't judge a person by their appearance but we do.In fact, experts say that when we meet someone for the first time we make a decision about what that person is like in three seconds.__8__ One of the most important things we look at is clothes, but it isn't the brand of clothes that people wear that is important. The important thing is to wear the right clothes for the right places.
__10__ We all have fixed ideas about what the people in a certain job should wear.If we visit a doctor, we hope to see respectable clothes under the doctor's white coat.__11__ Police officers wear uniforms to make themselves easily identifiable. In fact, a lot of companies have dress codes for their staff (员工) because they know that the customers hope to see them dressed in certain types of clothes.
But can our clothes really tell people what we are like?__12__ When people see us in the right clothes, they think we are serious about what we are doing.Furthermore, if we are clean, smart and polite, people will believe us a lot.
A.Maybe not, but they can show our attitude to what we are doing at the moment.
B.Some of the teachers hold different opinions.
C.But what do we look at
D.Teachers say that uniforms can help in other ways too.
E.Our clothes stand for our attitude.
F.It is not only schools that want people to dress in a certain way.
G.When we go into a bank, we expect the staff to wear suits or dresses.Module 5 课下主题训练 体育活动、大型体育赛事、

If we jump in the air as high as possible, we can stay off the ground for about half a second.Michael Jordan could stay airborne for almost one second while ski jumpers are able to do that for five to seven seconds as they travel about the length of a football field through the air.So how do they do this
Three major concepts from physics are at play in the ski jump: gravity, lift and drag.Gravity pulls any object in flight down toward the ground and there is nothing athletes can do to lessen its effect. But athletes also interact with the air as they move.It is this interaction that can produce lift, an upward force produced by air pushing on an object. If the force produced from lift roughly balances the force of gravity, the object can fly.The same interaction also produces drag.It resists the forward motion of any object and slows it down.
In the ski jump, jumpers start high up on a slope and then ski downhill to generate speed.Just before they reach the end of the slope, they jump.Once jumpers are in the air, the fun physics begins. They use careful body positioning to maximize lift while minimizing drag.To do this, they adjust their skis and bodies to keep nearly parallel (平行的) to the ground and place their skis in a V-shape just outside the form of the body. This position increases the surface area that generates lift and puts them in the ideal angle of attack that will also maximize lift.As drag reduces the speed of the jumpers, lift decreases and gravity continues to pull them. They will begin to fall faster and faster until they land.
As you tune in to the Olympics and wonder at the physical power of the athletes, take a moment to consider their mastery of the concepts of physics.

Millions of monarch butterflies (帝王蝶) once covered the trees of California's coastal areas each winter, but now their numbers are decreasing. The recent annual Western Monarch Count found that the butterfly population was down by 99 percent from populations 40 years ago.
Monarch butterflies have two populations:eastern and western varieties separated by the Rocky Mountains. The populations are very similar in appearance, but western monarch butterflies are generally smaller and darker in color. The two also follow different migration (迁徙) patterns.Eastern monarch butterflies spend winter in Mexico, while western ones gather on central California coasts to wait out the cold.
In early spring, the two leave their rest places and begin to travel eastward.By the time the butterflies reach the Central Valley, they breed (繁殖).A butterfly can lay hundreds of eggs in a few weeks, and the new generation continues the migration. The cycle of generations and migration repeats every few weeks through the summer until the butterflies move as far as Idaho. And when the weather turns cold and the days get shorter, the butterflies return to California's coasts.
The overwintering population was counted every year. The missing information is the time period when the butterflies leave their winter woods and begin to breed in February, March and April.“We just don't know what they're doing in that middle period and how we can better support the population,” said Washington State University biologist Cheryl Schultz.“Maybe they're resting in the woods, or maybe they need more fuel along the way, etc.Any of those things might help monarch butterflies get from the coastal overwintering sites to breeding sites broadly in the Central Valley,” Schultz added. To fill that gap, the researchers set up the Western Monarch Mystery Challenge.
The ten-week program asks the public to submit photographs of monarch butterflies outside of their winter range.“We couldn't be looking for monarch butterflies right now without the involvement of the community. There just aren't enough of us,”Schultz said.“Reaching out to the community means we might be able to learn something where there is virtually no other way to learn it.”

Malin Pinsky had the first of two lightbulb moments in 2003 while crossing Drake Passage. He was then standing on the bridge of a research ship and was scanning the sky for seabirds, which was one of his duties as a research technician on the cruise (乘船游览). Just five months earlier he had finished college, where he studied biology and environmental science.
As the ship entered nutrient-rich Antarctic waters, whales suddenly showed up all around the ship. That moment on the bridge helped him realize that the ocean looks featureless from the top, but there's so much going on underneath.
The second lightbulb moment hit him several months later. Pinsky was then an intern (实习生) in Washington, DC.His job was making photocopies. It was around the time when two big reports had come out. Both focused on what policies might best preserve US ocean resources.“I realized we have all these laws and policies that determine how we as a society interact with the ocean. But they're far out of date. We don't yet have the science to know what the new policy should be,” Pinsky said.
Today he runs a lab with about 20 workers. His team wants to seek how our changing climate, as well as overfishing and habitat destruction, might be driving changes in fish and other animals in the sea.To find out, team members travel each year to coral reefs near the Philippines. There, they carefully catalog populations of different fish. They collect data on the growth and mating of these fish, their diversity and other factors.
“Pinsky's broad approach to the problem — looking at species, where they live and how fisheries are managed — is setting the pace for other scientists,” says Kimberly Oremus, a fishery economist at the University of Delaware in Newark, “Pinsky is pushing the whole field to respond to his growing body of research.”

Polar bears are beautiful animals that serve an important part of the ecosystems.__7__ And they are also losing range to the effects of global warming, which in particular affects the amount of sea ice.No wonder that the US Fish and Wildlife Service identified the rapid decline of sea ice as“the primary threat to polar bears”.
__8__ Removing even a single species can have potentially serious consequences.Polar bears are top of the line predators (捕食者) in areas where they live. All large predators perform a very important function.__9__ When an animal group loses its natural predators, overpopulation, sickness and mass die-offs can result.A sudden increase in population of Arctic seals would have a direct effect on the prey of seals and could reduce numbers of certain types of fish.
This could have a direct effect on humans.__10__ If people want a more people-centered reason to save polar bears, it may be that the lack of polar bears could eventually affect human food supply and commercial fishing industries. The idea that no species, including humans, lives without depending on others might be the most important human reason to save this species.
__11__ These include things like finding energy sources that don't give off greenhouse gases, not making any more attacks on polar bears, and stopping drilling for oil or natural gas in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).
A.An ecosystem is highly dependent on all of its parts.
B.They feed on seal, fish and native populations of deer.
C.They've lost most of their home ground for human activities.
D.They can help regulate and control the populations of other species.
E.We humans do have responsibility to save the life on the planet Earth!
F.People might have to compete with Arctic seals for food supplies from fish.
G.There are some things that may help slow warming trends and save polar bears.

1.From Paragraph 1, we know monarch butterflies ______.
A.are counted by researchers every decade
B.are in a very difficult situation now
C.have lost their home in California
D.have moved to new places
2.What do the two varieties of monarch butterflies have in common
A.Their breeding places.
B.Their appearance and size.
C.Their way of fighting against cold.
D.Their migration destination in winter.
3.What do Schultz's words in the last paragraph show
A.It's challenging to make the community get involved.
B.It's important to get help from the public.
C.It's difficult to study monarch butterflies.
D.It's rewarding to learn from the public.

4.What made Pinsky have the first lightbulb moment
A.The vastness of the ocean.
B.The sight of seabirds in the sky.
C.The view of Drake Passage.
D.The appearance of whales around the ship.
5.What did Pinsky realize when he was an intern in Washington, DC
A.He needed to take more photos of oceans.
B.He should do something to update ocean policies.
C.The US ocean resources need to be better preserved.
D.There have already been perfect policies to preserve the ocean.
6.What's Kimberly Oremus' attitude towards Pinsky's research
A.Positive. B.Doubtful.
C.Disapproving. D.Uninterested.

Last weekend I went fishing with my cousins by a river, where is two miles away from my home by bike. When we were about to return for home, we found one of our bike lost.We were really nervous then.Asking about the lost bike, nobody told the truth except me.And to my surprise, my parents don't scold me.Instead, they said I was a honest boy.I have benefited great from my family rules.I'm not the best at schoolwork, but classmates trust me and nearly everyone is willing to making friends with me.It helps me know better about “Honesty is the best policy.”
