Seminole was far too accustomed to the business.Everyone sympathized with him depending on long hours, minimum wages, and ill-mannered customers.Although struggling to pay his rent, he still went all out to make those lucky enough to sit at his tables laugh. The day was going quickly.
He was exhausted when he arrived to work the next day, but he went about his daily duties, putting on a brave face as customers complained about the food or questioned the bill.Usually as he prepared to close for the night, a couple of customers would sit down and order drinks. Most of the crew had left by closing time, but Seminole stayed to serve.Eventually, the last round was ordered and he gave them the bill. The minimum tip was suggested on the receipt.“Tomorrow will be better,” he murmured.
But luck wasn't on his side.Evening approaching, a group of teenagers stepped in.Thankfully, they were polite and respectful.Their cheerful behavior began to rub off on him.As always, he did his best to make their dining experience a pleasant one.
Once they finished their dishes, he placed the bill on the table, accompanied with some candies. They placed their notes on the receipt and left smiling. When he returned to clear the table, he was shocked. The teenagers only left a tip of $3, but their total bill was more than $100.He'd gone above and beyond serving the tasty dishes. How could they be so rude
Later that week, he struggled to let go of the awkward memories. He arrived at work and expected it to be like any other, but there was something left behind the desk for him — a two-page handwritten letter from the teenagers with $18 attached, in which they explained they were unaware of the tipping practice due to it being their first time out alone.Everything suddenly made sense.
Seminole was so touched by their gesture that he uploaded a picture of the letter sharing their admirable efforts. The Web visitors voiced their opinions, and the reaction was more than positive.

Pilates, yoga and the running machine get all the attention when it comes to popular ways to stay healthy. There is, however, a more humble exercise that might not be so attractive, but has all the benefits — walking.
Certified fitness professional Jolynn Jaekel explains, “What I love about walking is that anyone can do it at any age and any fitness level. Plus, it is good for your heart, your head and your wallet.”
A recent report details the health benefits of walking. The report found that walking regularly to fulfill the 150 minutes of moderate physical exercise every week, recommended by the UK's chief medical officer, could save 37,000 lives each year. Scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California found that quick walking reduces the risk of heart disease more effectively than running. They observed participants aged between 18 and 80 over a six-year period and found that walking reduced the risk of heart disease by 9.3%, while running reduced it by 4.5%. And there is even more good news: 30 minutes of quick walking over five days could help you sleep easily, according to research by Oregon State University. The study by the university showed that walking helped participants sleep better and feel more alert during the day.
The sooner you get started, the sooner you'll notice the differences in your mind and body. So, go out for your 30-minute walk in a nearby park or green space.

Research shows that we spend one-third to one-half of our waking life not living in the present. __9__ Our brains transport us to past events, imagined future scenes and other internal thoughts.
This allows for introspection (内省) — the space to imagine, remember, reflect and then use these fantasies to solve problems and innovate. But introspection can sometimes lead to more harm than good. __10__ When we focus inward to work through our problems, we may find that doing so causes us to feel worse.Negative thought cycles like this can make our capacity for introspection feel more like a curse than a blessing.
The fact that introspection is both a helpful tool and destructive force is a great contradiction of the human mind.Fortunately, science has begun to explain why this happens, and how to control it.
__11__ This motivates our emotions to a degree of rejecting alternative ways of thinking about the issue that might cool us down.In other words, we lose insight. One natural solution to this problem is to zoom out — to “step back” from your problems so that you can think about them more objectively. __12__ However, not just any conversation will do.The key is to focus on talking to people who not only allow you to express your emotions but also help broaden your horizons.
Introspection is central to the makeup of the human mind. The challenge is to minimize the negative effect while we achieve its potential. __13__
A.But it can be wonderful to live in the past.
B.We naturally separate from the here and now.
C.It might contribute to anxiety and depression.
D.Another way to gain insight is to talk to others.
E.Regulating negative emotions also helps to reason wisely.
F.Negative thought cycles occur when we zoom in too close to our problems.
G.Being aware of how our minds work can help us make the best of introspection.
11.选F 根据下文的“This motivates ...more objectively.” F项中的“zoom in”与该段中的“zoom out”对应,且空后的“This”指代F项的内容。

My son Joey was born with club feet. The doctors assured us that with treatment he would be able to walk normally — but would never run very well. The first three years of his life were spent in surgery, casts and braces. By the time he was eight, you wouldn't know he had a problem when you saw him walk.
The children in our neighborhood ran around as most children do during play, and Joey would jump right in and run and play, too. We never told him that he probably wouldn't be able to run as well as the other children, so he didn't know.
In seventh grade he decided to go out for the cross-country team. Every day he trained with the team. He worked harder and ran more than any of the others — perhaps he sensed that the abilities that seemed to come naturally to so many others did not come naturally to him. Although the entire team runs, only the top seven runners have the potential to score points for the school. We didn't tell him he probably would never make the team, so he didn't know.
He continued to run four to five miles a day, every day — even the day he had a 39 degree fever. I was worried, so I went to look for him after school. I found him running all alone. When I asked him how he felt, he simply replied “OK”. He had two more miles to go. The sweat ran down his face and his eyes were glassy from his fever. Yet he looked straight ahead and kept running. We never told him he couldn't run four miles with a 39 degree fever, so he didn't know.
Two weeks later, the names of the team runners were called. Joey was number six on the list. Joey had made the team. He was in seventh grade — the other six team members were all eighth-graders. We never told him he shouldn't expect to make the team. We never told him he couldn't do it. so he didn't know. He just made it.

In recent years, there has been a rise in the volume of audiobook sales, which is easily aided by the dominance of the smartphone. Are there other contributors to the rise beyond technology
One thing is obvious: Reading even a short book involves a significant investment of time and prevents any other activity. You can't drive or garden while reading.Andy Miller, the author of The Year of Reading Dangerously, said, “I was hunting for a book to read.Kit Waal, my friend, said,‘you should get the audiobook Old Filth; it's fantastic.’ She was right.I could walk the dog and still be reading a brilliant novel, or have one read to me brilliantly.I love that book and I love that way of reading it.So _I'm_a_recent_convert.”
Does he worry audio provides too different an experience to reading itself “Clearly on audio you are at the mercy of the reader's skills,” he says.“But then, ego (自我) aside, the same is true of reading a book on the page. We're all at the mercy of our own skills and tastes, aren't we But on audio you are influenced by someone else's interpretation. And you might simply dislike the voice of the reader. But at its best audio offers a complementary (互补的) experience to the actual book.”
Will audiobooks distract us from the page before us Better to focus on what we might gain.As someone who frequently interviews authors on stage, I'm aware of the unique insight into a text produced by hearing someone read their own work; I've frequently reinterpreted a passage after such an experience. But that has had no impact on whether or not I'll read a book by a writer I will never hear reading.
I once met the writer Don Delillo. In response to a question about the process of writing, he remarked that he sometimes became attracted by the shape of particular letters, by the way individual words appeared before him.He sounded hippy-dippy; then it made perfect sense.Reading does start with shapes, which slowly resolve to make a certain meaning, filtered through our own subjectivity and our senses. That will never change.
1.What does Andy Miller mean by “I'm a recent convert” in Paragraph 2
A.He likes the reader's voice.
B.He enjoys his daily routines.
C.He falls in love with audiobooks.
D.He is addicted to reading novels.
2.What does Andy Miller think of the audiobook
A.It has a good voice.
B.It limits our interpretation.
C.It controls our skills and tastes.
D.It misleads our interpretation.
根据第三段中Andy Miller所说话中的“on audio you are at the mercy of the reader's skills” “But on audio you are influenced by someone else's interpretation.”
3.What is Don Delillo's attitude to reading the actual book
A.Unclear. B.Objective.
C.Opposed. D.Favourable.
4.What is the best title of the text
A.Easy listening: the rise of the audiobook
B.The audiobook — a growing trend in reading
C.Slow reading — the decline of the actual book
D.A new experience: the appearance of audiobooks

In the 17th century, the Netherlands experienced a period of artistic prosperity known as the Dutch Golden Age.During this period, artists found inspiration in Northern Renaissance painting techniques, contributing to masterpieces like Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer.Known as the “Mona Lisa of the North”, this painting represents the best of Dutch art and it has become one of the most beloved paintings in art history.
Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer is famous for his paintings of contemporary Delft, a city in Holland where the artist was born, lived and died.Girl with a Pearl Earring is Vermeer's most well-known work of art. However, it did not attain international fame at its time of completion. That came about at the end of the 20th century, when it was featured in a special exhibition in Washington, DC.
Girl with a Pearl Earring does not show a specific person.Instead, it shows an unknown girl dressed in grand clothing who, “like a vision coming from the darkness”, art historian Arthur K.Wheelock explained in the Johannes Vermeer catalogue, “belongs to no specific time or place.”
Vermeer is known for his ability to create shapes and forms using light rather than lines. This characteristic approach to modeling is particularly evident in Girl with a Pearl Earring.First, he would “invent”, or create an initial drawing on the canvas. Then, he made a single colored underpainting.Next, he added color. And, finally, in order to make the piece extraordinarily bright, he would apply a thin layer of the glaze to certain parts of the painting.
In addition to its fascinating context and appealing beauty, the piece is celebrated for the mystery that surrounds it.“When you think about Mona Lisa, she is also looking at us, but she isn't engaging — she's sitting back in the painting, self-contained,” Tracy Chevalier, the author of The New York Times' bestselling historical novel, Girl with a Pearl Earring, points out.“While the girl with a pearl earring in the painting is right there — there is nothing between her and us.She has this magical quality of being incredibly open and yet mysterious at the same time — and that is what makes her so appealing.”

A.Previous artists' skills.
B.The appearance of the girl.
C.Vermeer's international fame.
D.Encouragement from other artists.

A.To introduce the subject of the painting.
B.To show techniques used in the painting.
C.To explain the artistic value of the painting.
D.To uncover the mystery behind the painting.
8.How does Tracy comment on Girl with a Pearl Earring
A.By citing a theory.
B.By giving a definition.

Movie theaters around the world have closed during the coronations outbreak. Fortunately, there's never been a better time to catch up on classic old movies. Below, read our picks for best travel movies:
Thelma and Louise (1991)
Thelma and Louise, is a tale of female friendship, and the screen is dominated by the film's two lead females. The pals from small-town Arkansas hit the road on a weekend quest in search of fun and freedom from their jobs and their boredom.
Filmed in California and Utah, with the best Grand Canyon scenes filmed south of Dead Horse Point State Park, Thelma and Louise is a good option if you have never been out West or if you have and eager to return.
Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
It's one of the most satisfying films of director Wes Anderson all works. Set in a luxury ski resort in the fictional East European Republic of Zubrowka in the 1930s, the plot is supported by a murder investigation filled with stolen art, prison escapes and a secret concierge (看门人) society.
Though the hotel doesn't actually exist, much of the film was shot in the beautiful German town of Goerlitz, famed for its medieval streets.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
When Harry Potter runs through a column at King's Cross railway station in London to get to Platform 9 3/4, we know it isn't real. And yet we want to visit.
The movie's locations are inspired by real places, as graduates of English private schools will tell you: rushing down narrow old streets to visit tea houses and sandwich shops, discovering books that are hundreds of years old.
The Trip to Italy (2014)
In this film, you're on an extraordinary road trip along with two old friends. The route is from Piedmont via Rome to Amalfi, back to Naples and finally the tony island of Capri. Retracing the footsteps of romantic poets Byron and Shelley, they drive a Mini Cooper through the breathtaking country and alongside stiff seaside cliffs.

People used to protect cultural relics by hand works combing photographing and rubbing techniques. Although this method can keep the basic information, many vital details are still ignored.
3D scanning technology features in fast measurement speed and accurate catching capacity. It's good at collecting enough and accurate 3D data from different angles, which is beneficial to the restoration of cultural relics when coming into accidental damage. Experts can also virtually restore the heritages through the computer, and finish assistant researches via accurate 3D models.
For cultural relics' protection. 3D printing contributes to displaying cultural relics. It provides people with more chances to get to know cultural relics and better understand human beings' history.
Yucheng Museum has dug out a new collection of cultural relics in April 2019. One of the most important issues for archaeologists (考古学家) is data storage. Invited by Quimbaya Art×Tech, ScanTech conducted 3D scanning immediately on these relics by the 3D scanner. This handheld 3D ray scanner carries a big weight in acquiring very accurate 3D data and brings great convenience for further restorations and researches.
To avoid any damage, Yucheng Museum combined with 3D printing technology, based on 3D data to reproduce 1:1 3D model of cultural relics for exhibition, which aims to make more people get close to history and pass on these precious cultural heritages.
Time flies and many thousand-year cultural treasures have gradually disappeared from our sight due to technical problems. However, 3D scanning and 3D printing technologies put forward very effective 3D solutions for cultural relic display and protection.
