Hannah McKeand was born in Bristol in 1973.She got a degree in Classics at Lampeter University. After working as a marketing manager, she decided at the age of 31 to devote herself entirely to her primary passions (热情), exploring, adventure and the outdoors. She would take part in various expeditions (探险), in the Egyptian desert first, then in the remote valleys of northeast of Afghanistan, and then in Antarctica.
In 2001 her urge to explore began to develop with a trip to the Western Desert on the borders of Egypt, Libya and Sudan in search of prehistoric rock art. This trip took Hannah to the center of the second biggest wilderness on the planet, an uninhabited (无人居住的) area the size of India.
In 2004 Hannah joined a British expedition to explore the Wakhan Corridor in the northeast of Afghanistan in search of the source of the River Oxus. The upper (上部的) areas of this mountain valley had rarely been visited by Westerners.
Later that year Hannah turned to a cold desert in a 56-day expedition from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole.Crossing one of the harshest (最严酷的) environments in the world, the team of five battled with physical and mental exhaustion, injury, hunger and some of the lowest temperatures on earth.
In 2006 Hannah returned to Antarctica and once again skied from Hercules Inlet to the South Pole, but this time alone and unsupported. She set a new world record for the journey of 39 days 9 hours and 33 minutes.
In October 2007 Hannah began her first full adventure season traveling from Australia across to Chile and from there around Cape Horn and down to Antarctica.
Hannah hopes that by writing and speaking about her experiences in the world and sharing them with those who care to read or listen, she will inspire people to go after their own dreams and achieve their own goals.

Where some people see creepy (令人毛骨悚然的) insects, Jennifer Angus sees beauty: Rather than rely simply on paints and dyes, the 55-year-old professor of textile (纺织品) design creates patterns from thousands of lively insects.
As a kid, Angus had_a_penchant_for patterns, but she didn't develop an interest in insects until her late 20s, when she was researching textiles in Thailand and discovered a table cover.“The fringe (饰边) was made with metallic-looking green beetle (甲虫) wings,” says Angus.“I'd never seen beautiful insects — maybe because I grew up in Canada, where all the insects were brown or black. I realized I could take insects and turn them into patterns.”
Angus's insects aren't backyard ones. Most come from countries like Peru, Malaysia and Indonesia.“I always try to use insects that have been farmed or gathered by local people,” says Angus. And she refuses to work with endangered species:“If an insect seems hard to find, I won't use it.”
Since 2002, Angus has created site-specific works of art at galleries and museums around the world — like her latest piece at the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery in Washington,D.C. “My collection is very fragile,” says Angus. “I've been refusing some insects for more than 15 years, so I drive it everywhere myself. That means working out exactly how many insects I'll use. I can't get to a gallery and go, ‘I need another 500 cicadas!’”
Angus hopes to inspire a sense of wonder and appreciation in her viewers.“If people leave one of my shows thinking about insects in a new way — one that doesn't involve a fly killer — that's a success,” she says.
5.What does the underlined part “had a penchant for” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Had respect for. B.Had a liking for.

A.Rare ones. B.Winged ones.
C.Common ones. D.Backyard ones.

7.What can be learned about Angus's works of art
A.They can be seen around the world.
B.They sometimes take over 10 years to finish.
C.They are mostly created at Angus's own house.
D.They are mostly in the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery.
解析:选A 细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Angus has created site-specific works of art at galleries and museums around the world”可知,Angus的作品在世界各地都可以看到。

Ⅰ.阅读理解
Now everyone can view one of the world's most important collections of Asian and American art.The Freer and Sackler Galleries worked for over 15 years to make digital copies of more than 40,000 objects. The images are now released online.
Jan Stuart praises the project to digitize the collection.“It's starting something that's going to speed up research as well as just please everybody who loves beauty, and is interested in history and civilization.”
Courtney O'Callaghan says the online objects have deep cultural and historical meaning. She says the museum wanted to be sure that anyone who wanted to see the works could.
Courtney O'Callaghan notes another important result of digitizing the collection: protecting the valuable treasures.“It allows us to gather these beautiful, high-resolution images of objects so that we don't have to bring them out again. We don't have to touch them.”
Online visitors sometimes see more details in an image than they can when they look at a piece in the museum. For example, many museum visitors struggle to examine the artwork in the famous Whistler Peacock Room because the light is kept low there. The low light helps protect the exhibit. But in a digital view, online visitors can see the room in brighter light.
Ms O'Callaghan says the 3D view has helped researchers learn more about some ancient art by looking at it online than by studying the real piece. She says an important Chinese sculpture called Cosmic Buddha is a good example.
“It is an amazing sculpture that has a very detailed relief pattern on it.It is very hard to see with the naked eye. With using 3D not only can people see all around this object, but they're able to change the lighting and the color. It has really helped scholars better understand the stories on it.”

“It is an amazing sculpture that has a very detailed relief pattern on it.It is very hard to see with the naked eye. With using 3D not only can people see all around this object, but they're able to change the lighting and the color. It has really helped scholars better understand the stories on it.”

French author Jules Verne is one of the pioneers of science-fiction writing. He had a unique method for writing his books.First, he would thoroughly research a topic and collect many scientific facts.Verne would then take these facts and use his imagination to create scenes, original characters, and a plot for his exciting adventure tales. This is the approach he used to write his timeless novel Around the World in Eighty Days. But unlike many of his more science-based fiction stories, Around the World in Eighty Days is interested in the capabilities of technology in his own time.
Beginning in London, the story follows the adventures of two men.One ill-fated evening at the Reform Club, Phileas Fogg bets his companions £20, 000 that he can travel around the entire globe in just eighty days — and he is determined not to lose.Breaking the well-established routine of his daily life, the reserved Englishman immediately sets off for Dover, accompanied by his hot-blooded French manservant Passepartout.Travelling by train, steamship, sailing boat, sledge and even elephant, they must overcome storms, kidnappings, natural disasters, attacks and the dogged Inspector Fix of Scotland Yard — who believes that Fogg is a bank robber because he matches a description of the thief — to win the extraordinary wager.
Fogg is a brilliantly drawn character, a man who is cold and precise in all his habits. However, as the novel goes on, the icy man begins to change. He begins to place the importance of friendship and love above his usual concerns of reserve and punctuality. In the end, he is willing to lose his bet to help a friend.
With its vivid descriptions, Around the World in Eighty Days gripped audiences on its publication and remains hugely popular, combining exploration and adventure.
Although travel is an important part of the novel, the book's main theme is time.Fogg is constantly racing against the clock.Sometimes it works for him, but other times it's against him. It's Verne's way of subtly (微妙地) suggesting that time is beyond our control, and we should make the best of the time we're given.

It is widely believed that smiling means a person is happy, and it usually occurs when they're meeting another person or a group of people. However,a new study led by the body language expert Dr Harry Witchel shows this isn't always the case.
In his research,he asked 44 participants aged 18-35 to play a geography quiz game consisting of nine difficult questions so that they often got the answer wrong.Participants seated interacted with a computer alone in a room while their faces were video recorded.
After the quiz, the participants were asked to rate their experience using a range of 12 emotions including“bored”“interested”and“frustrated”.Meanwhile, their facial expressions were then computer analysed frame by frame in order to judge how much they were smiling based on a scale of between 0 to 1.
Dr Witchel said:“According to some researchers,a real smile reflects the inner state of cheerfulness or amusement. However, behavioural ecology theory suggests that all smiles are tools used in social interactions, meaning cheerfulness is neither necessary nor rich for smiling. Our study showed that in these human-computer interaction experiments, smiling isn't driven by happiness; it is associated with subjective involvement (主观参与), which acts like a social fuel for smiling, even when socialising with a computer on your own.”
Surprisingly, participants didn't tend to smile during the period when they were trying to figure out the answers. However, they did smile right after the computer game informed them if their answer was correct or wrong.Participants smiled more often when they got the answer wrong.Dr Witchel added:“During these computerised quizzes, smiling was greatly increased just after answering questions incorrectly. This behaviour could be explained by self-ratings of involvement, rather than by ratings of happiness or frustration.”
语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。人们普遍认为微笑意味着一个人是快乐的,但是研究表明,微笑仅是社交的需要,并不表明这个人一定是快乐的。
1.Why did Dr Witchel use difficult questions in the quiz game
A.To make it hard for participants to answer them correctly.
B.To make the answer period last as long as possible.
C.To discover the most intelligent participants.
D.To create a stressful situation for participants deliberately.
解析:选A 细节理解题。根据第二段第一句可知,设计难题的目的是让参与者难以答对题目,故A项正确。
2.What can we infer from what Dr Witchel said in Paragraph 4
A.Other researchers' opinion of a real smile is quite right.
B.Smiles aren't necessarily useful tools in social interactions.
C.Subjective involvement doesn't motivate smiling in social interactions.
D.Witchel's study finding is consistent with behavioural ecology theory.
3.What do we know about the text
A.Participants were asked to interact with each other in the quiz.
B.Participants in the quiz smiled less often when they got the answer wrong.
C.In Dr Witchel's opinion, smiling is connected with subjective involvement.
D.Dr Witchel thinks that a real smile reflects the inner state of cheerfulness.
解析:选C 细节理解题。根据第四段尾句可知,Witchel博士认为,微笑不是由快乐驱动的,它与主观参与有关。故C项正确。
4.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.What Contributes to Real Happiness
B.How to Identify Whether a Person Is Really Happy
C.Smiling Doesn't Necessarily Mean Happiness
D.People Generally Hold a Wrong View on Happiness
解析:选C 标题归纳题。通读全文,并结合文章第一段第二句可推知,文章陈述了这样的事实:微笑仅是社交的需要,并不表明这个人一定快乐。故C项最适合作本文的标题。

1.Why did Dr Witchel use difficult questions in the quiz game
A.To make it hard for participants to answer them correctly.
B.To make the answer period last as long as possible.
C.To discover the most intelligent participants.
D.To create a stressful situation for participants deliberately.

Bob Shahmardi was 4 years old when he developed a severe disease.Success rates with the disease were relatively low at that time, but his family was lucky to find a community that was helpful when they didn't have many resources and it was at that time that Make-A-Wish stepped in.Through that organization, the Shahmardi family got to enjoy a trip to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. The then 4-year-old hugged a character actor as part of a wish granted to him and his family by the organization.“It wasn't just going on a trip.It was more about how we got through that hard time.It was fun for me, but it was a lifeline for my parents,” said Bob.
30 years later, Bob and his wife, Jill Welch, decided to turn their wedding into a fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.Their wedding guests financed two wishes of local children, with more being planned. Many donated generously to the cause, spending more, perhaps, than they might have if it was just to buy the couple a wedding gift like fine china or a kitchen appliance.Bob said their wedding donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation isn't going to be a “ one_and_done ” situation. The second plan on continuing to contribute is going forward.
Gloria Jetter Crockett, president and chief executive officer of the organization, said she felt it amazing to have someone who benefited come back to pay it forward to other kids looking for wishes.
Contrary to popular belief, Gloria stressed that wishes aren't given to critically ill children as a “last wish”, but are given as a part of the treatment process. The organization granted at least 165 wishes last year. This year Gloria hopes to grant wishes whose number is somewhere between 199 and 299, depending on funding.

Ecuador may have a new tourism jingle (广告歌). But they don't want anyone to actually sing it. Indeed, the country's latest national park is built on the belief that silence is golden. The South American country has become the first in the world to build a “quiet park” beside the Zabalo River where silence is protected like a natural resource.
There are no transport routes here. Nor residential and commercial developments. You can't even hear the sound of power lines.
Named as Wilderness Quiet Park, the land is owned by the Cofán people of Ecuador. But hopes are high that this unique space in a world increasingly affected by noise will kickstart (启动) tourism in the region — quiet tourism, that is.
These days, it's almost impossible to escape the human noise. And it's a serious effect on the health of animals, including humans.
“Science has made it clear that noise pollution is not just an annoyance, it causes health loss and impacts wildlife's ability to survive. By recognizing the Zabalo River as the world's first quiet park, we are paving the way for many more quiet parks around the globe.” says Gordon Hempton, an ecologist and co-founder of Quiet Parks International, an organization which aims at spreading quiet across the globe.
So, what's it actually like when nature is the only soundtrack Here's how Sam Goldman, a journalist, describes it: “The monkeys roar; insects buzz; and birdsong cackles ...”
But the park not only gives nature a chance to find its voice. The people who own the land — the Cofán people — have long regarded themselves as caretakers of the rivers and rainforests in the region but their numbers have decreased to fewer than 2,000. Quiet Parks International will help the Cofán Nation “defend their lands and preserve their culture”.
