Do you think you have what it takes to be a successful scientist A successful scientist is generally a good observer. He makes full 1 of the facts he observes. He doesn't accept ideas which are not 2 on obvious facts, and therefore 3 to accept authority as the only reason for truth. He always checks ideas 4 and makes experiments to prove them.
The rise of 5 science may perhaps be considered to 6 as far back as the 7 of Roger Bacon, the wonderful philosopher of Oxford, who lived 8 the years 1214 and 1292. He was probably the first in the middle ages to suggest that we must learn science 9 observing and experimenting on the things around us, and he himself 10 many important truths.
Galileo (1564 1642), however, who lived more than 300 years later, was the greatest of several great men in Italy, France, Germany, and England, 11 began to show how many important 12 could be discovered by observation by degrees. Before Galileo, learned men believed that large bodies fell more 13 towards the earth than small ones, 14 Aristotle said so. But Galileo, going to the 15 of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, let fall two 16 stones and proved Aristotle was wrong. It was Galileo's 17 of going direct to nature, and proving our 18 and theories by experiment, that has led to all the discoveries of modern science.
What 19 those people good scientists From the example of Galileo, we know it clearly that successful scientists are those whose observations have 20 better results.

Don't hide criticism
“Politeness is another word for deception.” This is the view of James W. Pennebaker, chair of the psychology department at the University of Texas at Austin, US. He was quoted in a recent Wall Street Journal article about a speech 1 many of us share——“verbal tee-ups.”
What are verbal tee-ups They are like a cushion to 2 the blow when one wants to 3 bad or unpleasant news. For example, have you ever been told by your friend: “I am telling you this because I love you, but you really need to lose weight.” Or by your colleague: “No 4 , but to be honest, I think your presentation 5 the point.”
A Slate article gives a few examples of other verbal tee-ups. You can 6 yourself from your unpleasant words by starting it with “Please understand…” You can even try to manage your listener's 7 : “Don't take this the wrong way, but…” or “Don't get mad, but…”
Some verbal tee-ups are simply 8 . For example, “I'm not saying…,” or “I don't mean to say…” Such as, “I am not saying we should stop seeing each other, but I need some space to think about our 9 .”
For the speakers, verbal tee-ups are used to make it easier to say something 10 . They sound 11 and polite. But Pennebaker, who 12 these phrases, says in many cases, the point of these phrases “is to formalize social relations so you don't have to 13 your true self.”
Elizabeth Bernstein, who wrote the Wall Street Journal article, says these sayings so frequently 14 untruth that they can be confusing, even when used in a neutral context. “They often lead to a 15 in personal communications because listeners 16 to take those types of statements in a negative light” she says.
To 17 the damage of verbal tee-ups, we need to be more aware of what we are going to say. If you are feeling a need to use them a lot, then perhaps you should 18 the possibility that you are saying too many unpleasant things to other people. For example, “To be perfectly honest…” often comes before 19 comments. If you are taking the trouble to 20 your honesty now, maybe you aren't always truthful.

Learning experiences happen to us throughout our lives. Not long ago, I had one that I would like to 1 .
I was going to Marblehead with my sailboat team. The team was racing down the highway at 85 mph 2 we realized we were 3 . Luckily, we saw a rest area ahead. I had a brand new $20 bill. I was so 4 because I had never had that kind of cash before. But spending it on 5 seemed like throwing it away. We all rushed into the pizza line. 6 I got a pizza and a drink, and walked to my table. About halfway through the meal, I 7 I had not actually handed any money to the cashier. I had just 8 out, and nobody had noticed. I felt terrible.

If I had been a " 20 " and gone back to pay for the pizza, I would have felt a little uncomfortable about it only once, or maybe twice.
