Natural disasters can affect (影响) children greatly and it takes a lot of effort and patience to help children mentally overcome the event they suffered. According to scientists, after a disaster, children can suffer mentally for months or even years. This may affect the family environment.
After a natural disaster, parents may not realize the nervousness their children feel, and may not pay much attention to complaints about physical discomforts (不适) such as headaches or stomach aches caused by stress. Children may have frightening dreams more often, especially about the disaster. During the day they may be afraid of talking about the disaster. Meanwhile, their school performance can be affected; the scores may go down and the children can become rude.
After the natural disaster, parents should teach children to deal with the sadness of the moment. Parents always want to make their children' s life easier and give them everything they want. But sometimes sadness can' t be avoided. Children may feel sad for the changes of their everyday lives.
Children should be treated with patience and without being blamed (责备) for being unhappy kids. Parents can let their children know that it is normal that they have those bad feelings and they don' t have to hide them from other family members. Parents should also tell their children that Dad and Mum understand how they feel. When a child feels sincere support from his family, teachers and friends, he will be able to return to his normal life sooner or later.

When a disaster happens, you might find yourself with nothing. You might even need to leave your home right away. So you are supposed to plan for the bad situations before the disaster comes. Here are some suggestions.
First, have a family meeting. Plan a way to get your family members together if you can' t find each other after the disaster. Choose two places for everyone to go to because it isn' t safe to return home after a disaster. The first should be near your house. You can go there in an emergency like fire. The second meeting place should be outside your neighbourhood.
Next, choose a person outside your area who can help your family get in touch with each other. After a disaster, it is often easier to communicate over a long-distance call than a local one. The person can pass messages between your family members.
Then, get a family disaster kit ready. It should include things your family needs like bread, water and medicine. It can help you live at least for three days. Put all the things in a bag so that you can carry it easily if you leave in a hurry. When doing it, remember that different people have different needs. It includes some special things that are necessary for elderly members of your family.
Finally, practise your emergency plan, and update (更新) it as necessary. You may not be able to stop disasters, but you can be with a little planning.
