Pamela Malhotra has always attached great importance to education. However, life
always seemed to “get in the way” every time she tried to finish her bachelor’s degree. The
single mom was so devoted to working to support her two children that she repeatedly put
her own education goals on hold, giving up her college program on two separate occasions
over the years.
When he was just five years old, her son Bonifacio Malhotra noticed her struggling to
get her degree, and he made a promise to help her. “I remember I just told my mom … one
day, it’s gonna be you and me,” Bonifacio said. “We’re going to gain our degrees at the
same time.” Those words proved to be prophetic for the mom-and-son duo, who currently
walked across the stage at the university to collect their bachelor’s degrees together!

that we’re gonna do this.” Their path to graduation wasn’t easy, but Bonifacio stayed true to
his promise and helped his mother along the way. The two hold two associate’s degrees each,
so in the fall of 2021 they registered together in bachelor-level online courses. They both
found the classes challenging, but Bonifacio stepped up as the cheerleader his mother
needed. “Mom, you’ve got to keep it going. I know you want to stop. We must keep going,”
Bonifacio recalled. “The main thing was just trying to get everything lined up and stay on
top of all the work.”
It took the Malhotras two years to finish their bachelor’s degrees, hers in humanities
and Bonifacio’s in public safety administration. Pamela plans to stay at her job as a
coordinator, and Bonifacio has accepted a job at university to help other students succeed in
college, too.

A Spanish project is attempting to 3D print coral reefs (珊瑚礁) to provide habitat for fish
and protection for beaches and coastal communities at risk from rising seas and other damage.
Coral reefs are massively decreasing globally, and some scientists say we could lose 70-90%
of our reefs due to warming ocean waters. That has all kinds of serious consequences because a
quarter of the world’s fish live in and around reefs, reefs are critically important protectors of
beach communities threatened by high waves and tides, and they support a massive amount of
biodiversity. That led marine biologist Lizzie Fane and her co-founder Alfred Martel, a
computer scientist, to start Coastruction, a non-profit organization.
“Even if you start on a small scale (规模) ... a square kilometer already, it could have a
great impact,” Martel says. “It could really protect a coast, a beach, or an area where there is a
community living and they need protection because the sea is rising.”
Being able to 3D print is important, because you match individual sites. Every location is
different with different coral species. “It’s like everybody has a different house,” Fane says.
“You can take into account habitat requirements of not just the coral but also the fish that live
nearby.”
Their current technology can print various shapes. The result can be an amazingly
natural-looking man-made rock with plenty of corners for both coral and other fish to attach
themselves and make homes.
The Coastruction founders don’t think they can possibly meet the global demand, so their
goal is to provide the tools — like the 3D printer — for local people and design the technology
to use cheap and locally-available materials to create the artificial coral reefs. No high
temperatures or chemical additives are required, and any loose powder or sand material not
used in one print will be used in the next. The 3D printer works on-site, so there’s no transport
of finished blocks required.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has hit the headlines in recent months, particularly since the
launch of ChatGPT in November. The chatbot can not only answer a broad range of questions,
but also create original poems and stories.
Japan’s first fully AI-created comic, Cyberpunk: Peach John, was released on March 9 by
Shinchosha, a major publishing house.
The comic is based on the futuristic imagination of the author, whose pen name is
Rootport. It describes how the Japanese folklore (民间传说) hero Momotaro, who is said to
have been born from a giant peach, lives in a dystopian (反乌托邦的) future.
All the fancy futuristic objects and creatures in the book, however, were designed and
created by Midjourney along with other popular online image-generation AI tools such as
Stable Diffusion and DALL-E 2.
Unlike traditional comic volumes which are usually black-and-white and short in length,
Cyberpunk: Peach John comes in full color and spans more than 100 pages. A work of this
length would normally take over a year to complete by even authors who are familiar with
comic creation. However, with AI creation, it took the writer a surprisingly short period —
only six weeks — to finish the whole work.
Despite gaining widespread attention as the first fully AI-drawn comic in Japan, the work
has also raised some questions and concern as well. According to Gulf News and CNN, some
people are worried that AI technology will threaten jobs and copyright ownership in the

W: Two priceless notebooks, filled with notes written by Charles Darwin, were returned to the
University of Cambridge in England this March. The notes were written around the time Darwin
returned from his voyage in the late 1830s. Their return came 15 months after Jessica Gardner,
who is in charge of the library, launched a worldwide appeal for information, in partnership with
Cambridgeshire Police and Interpol. University librarians discovered that they were missing in
January 2011, when it was found that the small blue box containing the notebooks had not been
returned to the university’s special collections strongrooms (保险库).The librarians didn’t know
who returned the notebooks. They were left on the floor in a public area of the library outside the
librarian’s office — on the fourth floor of the 17-storey Tower. They were in good condition in a
plain brown envelope inside a pink gift bag. In a statement announcing the return of the notebooks, Jessica Gardner said, “Along with so many others all across the world, I was heartbroken to learn of their loss and my joy at their return is immense”.
