Social networking dominates our life in so many ways. I am the one who is addicted to it. Sometimes I set deadlines for myself : I will start doing my homework at 8 pm and finish it in two hours. At 7:50 pm, I’m scrolling through my friends’ silly posts and photos. Before I know it, it’s 9:30 pm and I haven’t moved an inch from the sofa. I download song after song, video after video, but I’m not really paying attention. The stimulation is in chasing after the next song or video rather than truly enjoying it. Since I spend so much time socialising online, I keep delaying things that are important in my real life: homework, tasks, my good friends and so on. Especially, I miss connecting with my family members in a meaningful way. So it is with my sister.

Arthur was a good boy doing his best to grow into a good man. Arthur’s best friend was Kyle. If you couldn’t find Arthur, all you had to do was look for Kyle.
A few years ago, Arthur’s father was a successful businessman. But things went very wrong when his dad’s business failed. The two boys met when Arthur had to leave his expensive private school, which his family could no longer afford, and go to a public school. Arthur’s mom worked at the local bakery (面包烘房) and brought home boxes of baked goods. Just like Arthur’s, Kyle’s family struggled. They lived on a farm where they could not work any longer because Kyle’s dad was too sick, and his grandmother was too old. Kyle’s mom worked in the laundry (洗衣店) and still managed to grow vegetables for the family. The two families helped each other. Arthur gave Kyle’s family the extra delicious baked goods, and Kyle’s mom gave him baskets of carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, and fruit from the farm.
Things took a turn for the worse when Kyle’s 84-year-old grandmother was seriously ill and had to go to the hospital. Kyle and his family were understandably upset, but worse of all were the hospital bills. Fortunately, she survived.
One afternoon, Arthur found poor Kyle in tears. “What’s the matter, Kyle ” he asked. His friend wiped his tears. “Nothing, nothing at all!” he said. Arthur had his doubts, but he didn’t press Kyle. “Well, then,” he said. “I have good news for you! My Aunt sent me $50, and my mom said I could spend it on anything I wanted!”
“WOW! Does that mean, ...”
Arthur smiled. “YES!” he shouted. “That means I’m buying the robot!” “When are you going to buy it ” “Maybe this weekend,” Arthur said. “Now, how about you tell me what’s wrong ”
“Grandma is turning eighty-five next week, and I wanted to get her a new album (相册) for the old family photos. She loves paging through it, remembering and telling stories. I asked my dad, but he said it was too expensive.” Arthur didn’t say a word. He sat down next to his friend and ...

Simon transferred (转学) to the school which Jerry attended after his parents business closed down. Jerry had met Simon long before. After all, his mother once worked as the housekeeper in the large house that was Simon’s home. Since young Jerry had looked at all that Simon had with envy and anger. Jerry’s mother ensured that Jerry treated Simon’s family with politeness, unaware that each time she made him do so, her young son’s hatred increased.
Jerry was seen as the leader in class, being the captain of the school soccer team. The other students looked on him as their hero. When Simon transferred to the school, Jerry knew that it was payback time. He would show Simon that he was the superior one even without all the trappings of wealth. Thus, he always tried to ensure Simon was unwelcome in his class. He always said, “Sometimes, we have to treat people unkindly for their own good. ”
One day, Jerry’s teammate ran to him with the message that his form teacher and soccer coach wanted to see him in the teachers’ office. Jerry ran to the teacher’s office. The expressions on the faces of his form teacher and coach worried him. He sat down quietly, hoping that the worst would not happen. He knew that he had not managed to get the minimum score required for a school athlete to remain in the school team. But he was confident that his superb performance in the soccer team would overcome all those poor results. The look on their faces showed that he was mistaken.
As he left the office, Jerry was upset. How was he to achieve the results required by the school before they would let him play in the game due to start in a month’s time To catch up on all his schoolwork in a month was clearly impossible. His mother would never be able to afford a private teacher and he had no good friends who were capable of helping him.

Daddy had passed away the previous year, so Leonard, my grown brother was always quick to help anytime Mama called. This time my brother was asked to tear down an old shed. My sister Angie and I, with no shoes on, dogged his every step, trying to help, though reminded and warned of rusty nails (生锈的钉子) by mama.
Suddenly, Angie started screaming and Mama came running. Sure enough, she had stepped on a rusty nail. Mama examined my sister’s foot while Leonard looked at mine. On my way to see about Angie, I’d stepped on a nail, too. The grownups agreed we needed tetanus (破伤风疫苗) shots.
I hated shots, so I whispered to mama. “I don’t want to get a shot”. My mama directed my sister’s attention to other place, and then cupped a hand around my ear. “Arlene, you and Angie have to get tetanus shots. I need you to be brave so she won’t be too scared. If you take the shot without crying or screaming, maybe she won’t do that as well when her turn comes.
Loving and respecting my mother and wanting to relieve her worry, I made up my mind to get that awful shot without crying a single tear.
At the hospital, a nurse walked in with a syringe (注射器). Angie’s big blue eyes studied the nurse’s every move. The needle hurt so much that I wanted to scream. Mama looked down at my sister and then back at me. I knew she was reminding me to be brave. I didn’t cry or scream. .
Then it was my sister’s turn. Mama lowered my sister onto the table. “See there, Angie. Your big sister wasn’t afraid to get a shot. Arlene, tell Angie it didn’t hurt at all.”

Then Sara ran out of the house, and I went behind her, skipping down the front walkway to the sidewalk. Along the way, I could feel Mom's gaze on us.

参考答案
河南省洛阳市2022-2023学年高一下学期期末考试英语试题
47.On a family holiday last summer, my sister spent all her time complaining that she needed to charge her phone. It was then that I realised how much social networking had become a part of our daily lives. Even amidst the beauty of nature, we found it difficult to disconnect from the virtual world and engage with our surroundings. My sister and I often laughed about videos we found hilarious, but we hardly ever laughed over our own jokes anymore. We were in the same space yet miles apart, engrossed in our own virtual communities.
Then my father recently declared that every Sunday would be “No Screen Sunday” in our home. This new rule meant we had an entire day to ourselves without any screens, which initially seemed impossible. But as weeks passed by, we found ourselves looking forward to these Sundays. The rich and uninterrupted conversations we had, the board games we played, the meals we cooked and ate together, everything felt so real and warm. No Screen Sundays may not have completely removed our dependency on social media, but it certainly helped us value what was more important in life - spending quality time with our loved ones.

Just as the dog was overtaking us, we threw ourselves inside. It was really close! We felt relieved. I told Mom what had happened. At first, there followed no response. Then I saw Mom’s tears. “I am so proud of you! You did much greater than I had thought!” Mom said, holding me in a tight embrace, after which Mom looked into my eyes. She gave me some advice on tackling fierce dogs: “Next time you are cornered by such a dog, pretend to pick up a stone. It will be frightened away.” My mom’s words of praise and advice were deeply engraved in my heart. And I promised to be a better guardian of Sara and at the same time, take good care of myself.
