Jacky Hunt-Broers ma, who lost one leg to cancer, is seeking to break a world record by completing 102 marathon runs. She set her goal in mid-January. And since then, she has been running the distance of a marathon. Most of the time, she averages just over five hours to complete a run. If she keeps successfully completing marathon runs every day, she will reach her goal by April 28.
Until five years ago, she was not very active. But then she looked into running and decided to give it a try. The sport ended up being quite costly. Currently, she runs on an artificial leg made of a strong, light material known as carbon fiber. The material, which is designed specially for running, costs about $10, 000.
But Jacky says her investment has been well worth it. The biggest struggle used to be that she had to admit part of her body was gone. “Running really changed my life,” she said. “It helped me accept myself as an amputee (截肢者). It gave me a sense of freedom. I fell in love with the process of pushing my body further just to see what I could do.”
However, she has faced both physical and mental difficulties during her record-breaking attempt. On one recent day, Jacky said she felt like giving up at 24 kilometers and began to cry. “I had a total emotional breakdown. I was like, ‘I just can’t do this.’” she said.
Jacky is documenting her progress online and has also gained a large social media following. As she nears the end of her goal, Jacky is hoping to inspire a single thought in others. She tells people, “You’re stronger than you think and you’re able to do so much more.”

Family traditions are experiences or activities that are passed down between generations. These traditions can be as unique and special as the family itself. In addition to being something to look forward to, traditions also establish a foundation for family values and serve as special bonding (联系,连接) experiences.
Traditions can provide families with a sense of identity (身份) and belonging. They can inspire positive feelings and memories upon which family members can recall. Family traditions also provide a sense of continuity across generations. In other words, they are a way of transferring the family’s values, history, and culture from one generation to the next.
People create and maintain family traditions because they bring meaning to celebrations and foster (培养) special bonds. More importantly, traditions create positive experiences and memories for everyone by nurturing (培养,促进) a family’s connection and giving them a sense of belonging.
Family traditions also help children understand who they are and what is important to the family to which they belong. Traditions create a connection for children that comes from feeling like they are part of something that is unique and extraordinary. Family traditions can even contribute to children’ s self-esteem (自尊) and enhance (加强) their well-being (幸福). After all, children find comfort and security when things are predictable and consistent.
Family traditions don’t have to be formal nor do they have to cost money. All that is required to create a new family tradition is something meaningful to your family and a little creativity. Additionally, family traditions do not have to revolve (围绕) around the holidays. You can create family traditions for just about any time of year. Simply look for ways for your family to spend time together doing something they enjoy.

Astronauts traveling in space meet forms of radiation (辐射) that are uncommon on Earth. Some of this radiation has been shown to be harmful to human health. It is linked to cancers and heart problems. Yet a new American study suggests the radiation does not shorten astronauts’ lives.
Researchers studied nearly 60 years of health records and other data about male astronauts from the United States. They then compared this data with information about a group of men who are in good health, richer than most Americans and receive good health care — professional athletes. The study found that neither group has higher rates of dying at a young age. In fact, both groups generally live longer than other Americans.
Astronauts are usually well-educated, earn more money and are in better physical conditions than the average Americans. Some earlier research has linked being an astronaut to a lower risk of early death, the researchers noted. The findings were reported in the medical journal Occupational & Environmental Medicine.
Much of the existing research on mortality rates (死亡率) in astronauts has not yet explored the mental and physical demands of this job. There also has not been a lot of research on whether astronauts show what is known as the “healthy worker effect”. This effect leads people with employment of any kind to have fewer medical problems than people who are unable to work, said Robert Reynolds.
Reynolds said, “The challenge has always been to understand if astronauts are as healthy as they would be if they had never gone to space at all. To do this, we need to find a group that is comparable on several important factors (因素).” Considering the similar physical requirements, a group of athletes are selected.
As the result suggests, being exposed to radiation doesn’t lead to an early death for astronauts.
12. How did researchers carry out their study
A. By doing interviews. B. By analyzing some factors.
C. By comparing different data. D. By doing experiments in the lab.
13. What can we learn from the text
A. All radiation is harmful to human health.
B. Athletes tend to be poorer than most Americans.
C. Healthy worker effect makes working people healthier.
D. Research has explored the mental and physical demands of being astronauts.
14. Why are athletes chosen as a comparative group in the study
A. They work in different fields.
B. They both need to be healthy enough.
C. They receive the same diets and exercise.
D. They suffer from the same health problems.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Astronauts — Healthy or Otherwise B. Astronauts Are as Healthy as Athletes
C. Radiation Affects Astronauts’ Health D. Astronauts — Well-Educated and Well-Paid
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. B 15. A

故选A项。
