Baseball was always where my heart lay. However, my father did not care for baseball. Two recreational activities he enjoyed were golfing and fishing, neither of which I considered a real sport. He didn’t talk much and he wasn’t good at expressing himself. Frankly, I wasn’t entirely certain he cared about me. In a way, my father was like a familiar stranger I saw every day.
One day, watching the play on TV made me want a glove of my own. To my surprise, my father said he wanted one, too. He was on the portly side, but then again, one of the famous pitchers (投球手) on the Mets was even fatter. So I thought, why not
We bought two gloves, and that evening, he suggested that we go out to the courtyard and that I toss the ball around. I’d already practiced catching and throwing at school, but I could tell this was the first time for my father, because every time he caught the ball, it landed directly in his palm (手掌). If you’ve ever caught a ball with a baseball glove, you know how much this hurts.
But my father caught ball after ball this way. Slap! Slap! He winced (呲牙咧嘴). After about five minutes, I told him I’d had enough. It wasn’t out of mercy, but for my own self-interest. Neighborhood kids were watching and would no doubt laugh at me later for having an old man who didn’t know how to properly catch a baseball do that. When my father took the glove off, his palm was red and swollen.
Dad, who passed away 11 years ago, never told me he loved me. But that sound of the baseball landing in the soft flesh of his hand, over and over again—it spoke its own kind language, though at the time, all I felt was shame.
4. Why did the father want a glove
A. He was interested in baseball. B. He was impressed by the play on TV.
C. He wanted to show his skills in baseball. D. He wanted to make the author happy.
5. What does the underlined word “toss” mean in Paragraph 3
A. Pick. B. Catch. C. Throw. D. Practise.
6. What can we learn from Paragraph 4
A. The author criticized his father when playing.
B. The author’s father was good at playing baseball.
C. The author’s father hated to play baseball with him.
D. It really hurt when his father caught the balls.
7. Which could be the best title for the passage
A. Baseball and I B. The Sound of Love
C. Practice Makes Perfect D. Love That Never Comes
C
We are all aware of the damaging pollution that is created by driving petrol vehicles. Many of the world’s cities are suffering from traffic jams, which creates harmful gases. The solution for a cleaner, greener future could be electric vehicles (EV). But how optimistic (乐观的) should we be
There was much excitement last year when the UK government announced it will ban (禁止) the sale of new petrol cars from 2030. But is that easier said than done The road to global traffic being totally electric is still a long way off. Currently, battery (电池) life is an issue—a fully charged battery won’t take you as far as a full tank (箱) of petrol. There are also limited numbers of charging points to plug an EV into.
Of course, technology is always improving. Some of the biggest tech companies, like Google and Tesla, are spending huge amounts of money developing electric cars. And most of the big car factories are now making them too. Colin Herron, an expert on low-carbon vehicle technology, told the BBC: “The big development will come with solid (固体的) state batteries, which will appear first in mobile phones and notebook computers before they progress to cars.” These will charge more quickly and give cars a bigger range.
Cost is another issue that may stop people switching to electric power. But some countries offer some solutions, such as cutting prices by reducing import taxes (进口税), and not charging for road tax and parking. Some also provide special roads for electric cars to be driven on. These kinds of measures have made Norway the country with the most electric cars in each family.
But Colin Herron warns that electric motoring doesn’t mean a zero-carbon future. “It’s emission-free (零排放) motoring, but the car has to be built, the battery has to be built, and the electricity does come from somewhere.” Maybe it’s time to think about making fewer journeys or using public transport.
8. What can we learn from Paragraph 1
A. People are optimistic about traffic.
B. People like driving petrol vehicles.
C. Traffic jams create harmful gases.
D. Electric vehicles cause traffic jams.
9. What are the main issues that stop people using electric vehicles
A. Battery life and cost. B. Road tax and parking.
C. Harmful gases and cost. D. Import taxes and parking.
10. Which of the following statements will Colin Herron agree on
A. There will be no traffic jams any more.
B. Electric motoring means a zero-carbon future.
C. It will be very easy to build electric cars and batteries.
D. People could make fewer journeys or use public transport.
11. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Entertainment. B. Technology. C. Education. D. Health.

Most of us think those successful people must have superhuman self-control. Science points that self-control or willpower is often a characteristic of habit. If we have established good habits, little to no will power is required to choose wisely. The only catch is that building good habits takes effort. ___12___
Set a specific goal.
___13___ You’ll benefit from being more specific about what exactly you aim to do and how often. Don’t say “I’ll exercise regularly.” Say, “I’ll exercise for 15 minutes each day.” Having a bite-size objective makes it easier to get started and see your progress.
___14___
Now that you have set a specific goal, it’s time to think about what will help you to follow through. A plan like “I’ll study Spanish for 30 minutes, five days a week” is OK. But a detailed plan like “Every workday after my last meeting, I’ll spend 30 minutes studying Spanish in my office” is much more likely to stick as a habit.
Make it fun to repeat.
One excellent way to make goal pursuit (追求) fun is to try what is called “relaxing moment.” Consider only letting yourself enjoy some relaxation you desire while working toward your goal. ___15___ Relaxing moment transforms goal pursuit into a source of pleasure.
Find the right group.
Want to start running regularly You’re probably better off joining a running club than asking a few friends who are not in the habit of jogging. People in the running club have already built the habits you want. ___16___ It’s important not to get too crazy—it can be discouraging for you to try training with marathoners when you’re just hoping to work up to a 5K.

It was an early winter morning. Joan was sleeping soundly when the phone rang in the living room. She rolled over and glanced at the clock on the wall—it was already nine o’clock.Every weekend morning, her mother had to work part-time in the cafe. Although Joan was still sleepy, she knew she had to get up. After all, she didn’t expect her brother Mike, who was sleeping like a log, to hear the phone. She quietly went over to the living room. When she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warmhearted greetings,“Good morning, my Dear!”Recognizing the voice from her father, Joan was immediately surrounded by a sense of joy and the sleepiness swept away.
Joan’s father was a seaman, who rarely came back. Working on the sea was really hard.Born in a not-rich family, Joan and Mike felt the stress of life but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere. At school, they were straight-A students throughout the academic career and actively involved in school activities. They became the pride of the school and the envy of the students.
“Good morning, Dad, what’s up ”Joan said in an easy tone.“I have been very nice recently, my baby. Today is your mother’s birthday, and I have ordered her a cake online and it should come to the house in one and half an hour. Do remember to take the cake.”
Hearing her father’s words, Joan felt a little ashamed. How she could forget Mum’s birthday! She took a glance at the dirty clothes piled on the sofa and the oily floor that hadn’t been mopped(拖地) for a few days—There was two hours before her mother came back. She calculated they had enough time to prepare a surprise for Mum.
Thinking of this, she felt full of excitement.“Well, Dad, now I’m going to wake Mike up.We will give Mum a surprise !”
Joan hung up the phone with Dad, and hurriedly went to Mike’s room to share him her Big Cleaning plan. After listening to Joan, Mike readily accepted her idea.

But that sound of the baseball landing in the soft flesh of his hand, over and over again—it spoke its own kind language, though at the time, all I felt was shame.(11年前去世的父亲从未告诉我他爱我。
根据第三段“We bought two gloves, and that evening, he suggested that we go out to the courtyard and that I toss the ball around. I’d already practiced catching and throwing at school, but I could tell this was the first time for my father, because every time he caught the ball, it landed directly in his palm (手掌).(我们买了两只手套,那天晚上,他建议我们去院子里,让我toss棒球。我在学校已经练习过接球和投球,但我看得出来这是我父亲第一次,因为每次他接球,球都直接落在他的手掌上)”可推知,作者和父亲在院子里,作者投球,父亲接球,划线单词表示“投掷”,与throw同义。故选C项。
【6题详解】

【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“But Colin Herron warns that electric motoring doesn’t mean a zero-carbon future. “It’s emission-free (零排放) motoring, but the car has to be built, the battery has to be built, and the electricity does come from somewhere.” Maybe it’s time to think about making fewer journeys or using public transport. (但科林·赫伦警告说,电动汽车并不意味着零碳的未来。“这是一种零排放的汽车,但汽车必须制造出来,电池必须制造出来,而且电力确实来自某个地方。”也许是时候考虑减少旅行或使用公共交通工具了)” 可推断,科林·赫伦同意人们可以减少出行或使用公共交通工具。故选D。

【答案】The Big Cleaning plan began. Joan collected the clothes from sofa and then put them in the water of a basin. After pouring in some washing liquids, she began to wash them by hand. Realizing the clothes were clean enough, Joan gently squeezed water out and hung them to dry. Meanwhile, Mike was busy mopping the floor back and forth with all his strength, really aware of what hard work his Mum had at home! They had just finished the cleaning when the express boy came to the door.
With the cake placed on the table, Mum came in. “Happy birthday, Mum!”, they greeted in chorus. Confused and surprised, Mum stood frozen. When Mum realized what had happened, a warm current rose in her heart. Staring at the clean floor and the washed clothes, she could hardly contain her excitement and hugged them tightly, “It is the best birthday gift I have ever had!” Mum said emotionally. Just then Joan took out her smartphone and took a happy video named Mum’s Birthday and sent it to Dad.
