Passage1 阅读理解
Manchester is the “capital” of the northwest of England. Situated on the east bank of the
River Irwell, it is a lively busy city with a large student population. Although it was once seen as only a dull industrial place, in recent years Manchester has become the “in” place. It is
well-known for its clubs, its fashion and its music, not to mention its world-famous football team,
Manchester United.
There is plenty to see in Manchester and something to suit all tastes. For example, you have a taste of the Orient in Chinatown, home to Manchester’s large Chinese population. Another place to visit is the historical Eastlefield area, which contains the first urban heritage park in Britain. Here you can walk around the museums and experience the atmosphere of the 19th century
Manchester.
Football fans need not feel left out: they can always make a trip to the Old Trafford Manchester United Museum which also contains a coffee shop and a souvenir shop.
It’s easy to find your way around the city center and you’re never too far away from a bus, which will take you wherever you want to go. However, many people prefer walking in a city where there’s so much to see, and much of it is off the main travel lines.
If you get tired with all that walking, you can refresh yourself at one of the many cafe bars in the city. There’s a wide variety of homely and old-fashioned ones.

Passage2 阅读理解
You may think that an underground town with 3,500 residents is something out of a science fiction film. You may not believe that such a town has shops, car parks. hotels. restaurants, cafes. swimming pools, churches, galleries, museums, cinemas, a golf course and much more. We
Coober Pedy in Australia’s Outback is just such a place. Although film makers sometimes use the town as a spot for science-fiction films, it is a real community full of people who enjoy living underground.
The name Coober Pedy comes from the Aboriginal(土著的) phrase kupa piti which means ‘white man in a hole’ . Miners and their families choose to live like this, hoping to get rich looking for the precious stones that Australia is famous for—opals. Living underground is the only way to shelter from the sandstorms and the high temperatures above ground, where it can be up to 50 degrees C(122F). Deep down in the town far below the desert surface, the temperature is between 19 and 20 degrees C and life is cool.
Mary Deane believes that it’s the possibility of being poor one day and rich the next that makes Coober Pedy so addictive. She and her husband Jim are among the lucky ones. They live in a luxurious home, built with money from the opals Jim has found. “Whenever people hear we live underground, they always imagine a dusty cave,” says Mary, “but they are amazed when they sit in my spotless clean kitchen eating home-made apple pie. Everyone loves our pine furniture and I have every electrical appliance money can buy in here. Whatever I need I can have and whenever I ·need more space we just dig out a few more rooms! I love my home.”
However, not everything is perfect in Coober Pedy. Mary has a tiny garden that she is very proud of, but the grass is not real. Plant life is rare. Water is also five times more expensive than overground residents pay. Recycling is a way of life, so Jim usually washes his car with bath water and they have a special system to re-use the water from the dishwasher and washing machine. “We must be very careful about how we use water,” he says, “it’s not quite as precious as the opals, but it’s still very scarce!”
5 .What can be learned from the passage about Coobor Pody
A .It was originally built for science-fiction films.
B .It provides residents with recreational facilities.
C .It is losing its appeal to young people in Australia.
D .It was designed by Aboriginals who used to live there.
6 .Why do miners and their families choose to live in Coober Pedy
A .To save money and get rich one day.
B .To make it possible to produce opals.
C .To keep away from the modern way of life.
D .To escape from the terrible weather conditions.
7 .According to Mary Deane, one of the problems that living in Coober Pedy has is that
A .they have to be economical with water
B .they have to spend more money on food
C .they cannot use some electrical appliances
D .they cannot grow plants in the garden
8 .Which of the following might be the best title of the passage

B .An Unimaginable Film
C .Underground Mining

数应为 150 左右。
The perfect Christmas Tree
In our house in Middle Cove, Newfoundland, the tradition was to find the perfect tree before Christmas Eve. And this year, my brother Gilbert and I were being trusted to do it entirely on our own. And we took the challenge very seriously. So, axe in Gilbert’s hand, saw in mine, we set out for all the spots we imagined we might find a magnificent fir (冷杉树).
We were young, but we knew the rules. Trees could not be taken from personal land and not near any road.
We started out with the best of intentions. We were on Pine River Lane, and looking at the firs in the fields, but none of them looked quite good enough. It was getting dark but we still had no luck. On the way home, it was Gilbert who stopped, grabbed my arm and said, “I see it!”
“You see what ” I said.
“Right there, look. It’s perfect.”
And he was right. It was a young tree, two metres tall, standing alone. It was the classic Christmas tree. In all my years, I had never seen such a perfect one.
Perfect except for one small problem. The tree was pretty close to the road. Also, it was
behind a fence, so the tree was in someone’s yard. And not just any someone. It was in the yard of Timmy Green, my best friend.
However, the chances of our finding another one like it were slim to none.
“You stand guard,” Gilbert said. And with that, we were over the fence and on our bellies crawling toward the target. I lay in the snow and put the Greens’ house under surveillance (监视). I was to whistle or cough if I saw anyone coming.
Within a few minutes, it fell.
“Grab the end,” Gilbert said, and we lifted it over the fence. Now we were on the road. 注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为 150 左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Suddenly Gilbert’s eyes widened. “Ourfootprints!” he said.

D. run out 耗尽。
A. religion 宗教; B. law 法律; C. idiom 习惯用语; D. attitude 态度。后文“‘right is right ’ and ‘wrongis wrong’ ( “对的就是对的”,“错的就是错的”)”是芬兰人的生活 态度。故选 D 项。

One possible version:
Para.1: Suddenly Gilbert’s eyes widened. “Ourfootprints!” he said. Sure enough, all around the base of the stump were footprints. Boys’ footprints. We might as well have left a signed note. Suddenly, an idea occurred to me and I patted Gilbert on the shoulder and signaled him to climb over the fence. Together we got down on all fours and wiped away our footprints with great effort. All was done! And as expected, what greeted us back home was enormous praise for the perfect tree. Satisfied as I was, the idea of being caught “stealing” the tree kept lingering in my mind. However, nobody came around and asked questions. It seemed the Greens had never noticed the missing of their property.
Para.2: So it shocked me when Ifound Mr Green in our house with my parents, drinking tea on
Christmas Eve. A ripple of fear crept inside before I finally made it to look up at Mr Green’s eyes and forced a smile. It so happened that Dad was proudly introducing the Christmas tree. “It’s a pity I’ll never have one like that.” Mr Green spoke of his tree in the yard which was nurtured for Christmas with lowered eyes. Cocooned in overwhelming guilt, I kept up courage and stuttered my apologies. Mr Green, shocked at first, nodded smilingly after learning the whole thing. Stroking the delicately decorated tree, I came to realize that not only did I find the perfect Christmas tree, but also retrieved the best in me, which was, is and will be carved in my memory.
